RE: [LegacyUG] Citing Personal knowledge

One school of thought that I was taught was that only the mother can truly
relate the day and time of the birth, particularly if the birth took place
before fathers were allowed into the delivery room.

Ed,

There is a SourceWriter template for Personal Knowledge.
If you use Basic Sources, you can enter something similar.
I include whose knowledge and how they know or think they know - ie something
that enables you to evaluate the knowledge.
eg: If my brother tells me he's a grandfather again on the day of the birth, I
can be sure of the date - unless he just says "last night" and doesn't know at
that stage whether it was before or after midnight.
But if I ask him now when one of them was born, I can't be so sure of the
information he gives me unless he looks it up as he's not good with dates.
Takes after our father - who gave us birthday presents but rarely on the day
itself.

family member), but you have no birth certificate or other
documentation. How would you cite the source? I have more than one
instance like this, and I could order the certificates, but I would
rather put that money toward other genealogical goodies, like Civil
War Pension records. Not only that, but ordering documentation like
that just seems like a waste of money, since I'm 100% sure of the
information.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Merge Duplicates - story of my success

Do you know how much I love Legacy? Today, I have confirmed that my partner and
I are connected, other than via our own relationship, through four marriages -
and I'd have never found this if it weren't for Legacy.

You can see an illustration of this relationship here -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ws03zjvtowp18dc/Wendy%27s%20relationship%20chart.PNG?dl=0

I was a little bored one day a while back, and started playing around a bit on
the computer. Ended up running Merge Duplicates in Legacy, and after working
through many false matches (due to having 'placeholder'
names for many people who I know exist but don't know their names yet) struck
this potential match where one Robert Mills had parents recorded, and the other
had a wife - but they both had the same birth and death dates. One was
connected to me, the other to himself.

My sources showed I'd gathered the data for the two men from different
places/people. I couldn't find out via those routes if anyone had since
connected the two, so I purchased a copy of the marriage registration for the
husband and wife, which would name the parents of both parties.
That arrived by email today, and voilà ! - it's one and the same man.

While I've known all along that this could be a possibility - New Zealand is a
very small country and I'm not ruling out a closer connection, since there's a
whole lot more to be researched in both our families - this has come as a big
surprise.

I have had the Merge Duplicates process on hold since I found this, just in
case I wanted to undo that merge when I knew the truth (having jumped ahead and
done it before thinking about what I was doing, LOL!!), and each time I open my
database I'm reminded that it's on hold (and do I want to continue with the
merge or keep it on hold?), so now I can move on and continue looking for other
potential duplicates.

And I would never have known about this if I didn't "go wide" and look beyond
the immediate ancestors. I made this connection largely because I made contact
with a descendant of the 'middle' family in the chart linked above, who was
interested in his connections with my family, and I'd added some of his line to
my database so I could place him there.
That effort has paid off in a major way. :-)

Wendy

Hi Marianne,

I don't know whether you saw the very brief answer provided or whether it was
helpful if you did see it.
You added your question to an existing thread which has been further highjacked.

The answer is to Merge them.
If you knew how to do that, you wouldn't have asked your question.

The alternative to merging in this instance is just copy the source to the
source clipboard - on the Assigned Sources page you'll find a copy button
bottom left which copies the highlighted source with the source details to the
Source Clipboard and paste it to Petrus - and add an AKA for Petrus. Then
delete Peter.

However, I'd practice merging as it's likely you will find the same issue again.

Tools - Merge - Manual Merge

Before you do the merge
1) backup your file
2) take note of the RINs of the people you want to merge.
3) with Petrus highlighted, open the merge screen as above.
4) use the Select Right to find Peter
5) check the options for information that is different by choosing the radio
button next to information you want to keep.
6) Note that the alternate data doesn't need to be lost. eg: You can opt to add
Peter to the AKAs of Petrus by clicking the black square next to Given Name and
choosing "Copy the name on the right to Alternate names."
You'll find options under that black square when you are wanting to preserve
other differing data.
7) When everything has been checked - including on the various tabs that have
an asterisk, click "Merge Right Individual into Left Individual" button
Done

[LegacyUG] SSDI Source doesn't appear in Output Tab or Reports

2013-07-27 Thread Marianne Szabo
Hi - I just used a saved Master Source for the SSDI that I have used many
times in the past to add death and birth information to a person in my file.

I filled in all the information in the usual fields, on the Edit the Source
Detail Screen, saved it to her death date, and then also to her birth date.

However, even though everything is in there when I look to the right on the
screen where you can see the output, nothing appears on the Output tab on
the Assigned Sources screen, and the source is missing entirely from any
reports.

I've checked it against all the other sources I have (where I chose "Show
Source using Print Options") and everything is set up the same.

I then deleted this source entirely from both the death and birth event
fields, and did the whole process again - same result.

I ran File/Check/Repair and nothing came up.

What's happening?

[LegacyUG] XP on netbook, WIN 7 on PC - can I transfer dg between them?

2013-05-27 Thread Marianne Szabo
Hi - I got a new PC in January, running Windows 7. This is my primary place
for all things Legacy.

I also have a netbook that I only use when I travel. The netbook still uses
Windows XP.

If I want to upload my Family File from my PC to the netbook will there be
any problems because the operating systems are different?

When I want to do this, I save my PC database to a flash drive, then upload
that to the netbook, so I have the latest information when I travel.

I also use the netbook to add information to the database after I've done my
research. Then I would save those changes to the flashdrive and upload the
latest file to my PC on my return.

So I'm worried about problems going in both directions.

I also have the Families app for my Kindle Fire, which is great if all I
want to do is see my Family File, but it's too hard to enter data on the
Fire.

[LegacyUG] RC3 at end of backup

2012-07-08 Thread Marianne Szabo
For the last two days when I back up my family file, it starts with the
designation of .fdb at the end, but by the time it's finished it says
"~rc3rc3" or something like that. It disappears so fast, I can't write it
down.

When I open the database, everything appears to be OK. I save my backup
copy to a thumb drive. I keep 6 copies of the most recent dates.

I'm using 7.5.0.191, Windows XP.

Is this a problem??

[LegacyUG] nFS treatment of Living persons

2012-03-23 Thread Marianne Szabo
Hi - I just tried nFS linking to it via my Legacy database. In the filters,
I selected "Suppress living", which did eliminate living persons in the
list. BUT, one person in the list who comes up with a match has all of her
children displayed, including those who are still living. How do I prevent
this information from displaying?

[LegacyUG] Non-Population Schedule for 1850 - agriculture

2011-01-19 Thread Marianne Szabo
I have a copy of the 1850 Non-Population Schedule 4, Production of
Agriculture from Ancestry that lists a family member's farm, its value,
livestock, produce, etc.

I created an event for this information in Source Writer [I added
"Agriculture Schedule" as an event category], but when I looked for a
template, I couldn't find one for a non-population schedule.

What templates, if any, have others used for similar situations?

[LegacyUG] Group very quiet - is there a problem?

2010-03-27 Thread Marianne Szabo
Hi - I've gotten almost no messages for the past two days. Is there a
problem? I haven't unsubscribed, and nothing is stuck in my spam filter.
