Your plethora of "St. Church" locations is easily solved by putting the Town
first - "Bamburgh Church of St. Mary" or "Bamburgh St. Mary's Church".

That also keeps report indices sorted by town.

Hi Cathy

That was pretty well what I had suspected. It almost seems that the
developers only built half of the system with dealing with locations/places
vs addresses, or just added addresses as a later extension.

I started using the locations to locate a physical area such as a
Village or Town / / County / Country (being UK based and based on the
GeoLocation list), with occasional extensions to add further sub-units, such
as Hatcham, New Cross, , Surrey, England where Hatcham, Surrey would be
misleading.

I then started finding references to churches, as in baptisms and
marriages, and started adding those to the location list, and my current
locations list is around 2500 entries, of which 200 or so start with St
church / location. I rather suspect that this is what most users do. But
this started to become more complex, especially as those entries were
included in the Location index in reports at the building level.

So I then started looking at the Address fields, which happily show up
as an icon on the marriage and events, or as Address.. option against birth,
baptism, death and buried entries. Now, as I am working through my database,
I am moving all of the entries in Location that refer to a building, or
vessel, into the Address entries, where I can be specific to the building or
church by street and location. Currently I have nearly 500 churches, or
equivalent, and more than 100 other addresses. The reverse is that I have
removed many of those from the Locations list since they map to a single
location.

My feeling is that I am working the 'right' way to record Addresses as
being different from Locations. but that the system, while supporting both,
does not have sufficient support for addresses or integration between
addresses and locations.

Regards

Chris

Chris,

Searching on Marriage Address isn't available.

I think the only thing you can do is work from the Master List for Event
Addresses (View - Master Lists - Addresses - Event) and the Show List
options there.

OR, as you say, go direct to the Access database and use SQL since you
appear to know how. So long as you make a backup before you do this, you can
always recover if you don't get it right.

Put in a suggestion to include Addresses in the Search options for Marriage.

;) I don't use Event Addresses in Legacy. The tools for Locations are far
better.

Because I don't use them, I rarely think of asking for them to be improved.
I leave that to those that do use them.

Nothing I do depends on keeping to the artificial 4 location field idea
(which works for most USA locations but not for those in Australia or
England where the majority of my research is) so I enter locations from
smallest unit to country and sort the location list right to left.

Try restarting your computer and see if that resolves the problem.

I suspect that the file has been opened in an add-on program, or the program
crashed and the .LDB file wasn't released.

Don't try deleting it - just try closing all programs and restarting your

Legacy has bought out Passage Express so we are doing the technical support for

but this is usually easily solved by simply reinstalling the program. Before
you reinstall, reboot your computer and make sure all unnecessary Windows

I just found a work-around to get the correct number until the next update is
issued. Select the born after 2000 line then use the Create Search List Button
to create a new search list. That will correctly find everyone in your database
born after 2000. After creating the list select the option to open the search
list. The number of people found will be shown in the Title bar of the list
results. In my file the statistics report showed 1 person born after 2000, the
search list contained the correct number (73).

Maybe a little more explanation would be in order of why I said that
"02/21/1942" has nothing wrong with it. Taken in context, the OP stated Legacy
was marking "02/21/1942 - Present" as BAD. I stated that it was the word
"Present" that caused Legacy to declare it BAD and not the entry of the date as
"02/21/1942".

Specifically, if a user were to enter 02/21/1942 all by itself, it would be
accepted by Legacy and not marked as BAD. Assuming that the Legacy date format
is set to dd-mmm-, you should expect to see Legacy immediately convert it
so that it displays as "21 Feb 1942". But almost all genealogists would
consider it a bad habit to enter dates in that format and all should try to
think in terms of the standard format of day-month-year. Think of it as
smallest-middle-biggest. The confusing American practice of 02/21/1942 is
middle-smallest-largest. If you ran across an American date entry of
02/04/1942, it probably means 04 Feb 1942 but in the rest of the world, it
would work out to 02 Apr 1942. Avoid the confusion and get used to entering
dates as dd-mmm-. As "Dad" stated in his message, it is the acceptable and
standard method of entering dates.

Wen .. The acceptable and standard entry for dates in genealogy is 16 Feb 1933
... anyone using any other method confuses the issue and we stress this is the
only way for all concerned world wide to enter dates... If I understand your
discussion Dad

[LegacyUG] Date question

2010-08-16 Thread Ronald E Howell
I have several events (i.e. Occupation and Residence) in which I use the
date as follows: '02/21/1942 - Present'. The Potential Problems Report
shows that the date is 'bad'. Is there a way to change the date (not 'Mark
as Not problem' on the report) as to remove the items from the report?

Thanks in advance

Ron H

What type of source would be used for a newspaper wedding announcement?

An original document cut out from the newspaper.
