Sue,

A bigamous marriage is not a marriage (U.K.). With the one which I have I
created a Bigamous Marriage Event, particularly since in this case the man
was convicted of the criminal offence and imprisoned.

Looks like no one has the answer as there hasn't been any more Reponses, even
though it must be quite common if it has happened to your data base as well. I
am sure it has something to do with check/repair.

Your question raised my curiosity. I used SearchDetailed Search with these
parameters:
  Look for whom? Individual
  Where to look Notes-General
  How to lookContains
  What to look for MH:
  Clear list before this search
  Click Create List

To my surprise, I have 47 individuals in my database with similar entries in
the General Notes.

I did a similar search with these parameters:
  Look for whom? Marriage
  Where to look Marriage Notes
  How to lookContains
  What to look for MH:
  Clear list before this search
  Click Create List

This time I found 21 marriages with similar entries in the Marriage Notes.

They must have come from an import because I don't make that type of entry.
If you discover where they may have originated, please post again. I wish I
had an answer but at least you have confirmation that this is not unique to
your file.

  DEATH:RIN MH:1F269
  RESI:RIN MH:IF292

[LegacyUG] Surnames

2013-09-10 Thread Sue Anderson
Can I ask for guidance on surnames?
Is it better to stick to a general surname for a family and put all others in
akas or should I put what is actually on each record as the main name. Index
view would be difficult.
For example one English parish has
1608 Eliz d Simon Ayres
1611 William s Symon Aires
1617 Simon son of Simon Eire
1673 William son William Eyre
In the same register there is Air, Aire, Ayre, Ayer, Eire, Eyre, Eyer + s on
some and even Hare! Legacy gives the father’s name so should I leave that for
children and put the others in akas?

I think from memory FTA looks for two event names - Census (with nothing
extra), and Residence. The other field it will look for is more for the Lost
Cousins website, and that field is Lost Cousins
I recall when I had US Census and England Census as field names it didn't find
those entries, but when I switched them to just Census it did. (I used to put
all my Census in Residence though, I've been switching them to be more clear as
to source from the outset. Because I still want to delineate which country's
census, I put that in Description, the year in date, and the place/town the
person actually lived In Place.

All the features that have appeared in Legacy 8 Revealed articles are
interesting and nice-to-have. The tagging options and the instant
duplicate checking alone will be worth the upgrade for me.

However, I was wondering whether Legacy 8 will attack the fundamental
problems with Legacy 7? Specifically the requirement for non-standard
installation, the use of old-fashioned file requesters and the inability
to have more than one window active at a time. These have dragged on
ever since I first used Legacy 4 and now the new programming environment
is being used I'm hoping that these issues will disappear.

The other thing I'm hoping to hear is that locations have become
time-sensitive, so we can keep track of how towns have moved from county
to county, countries have changed name etc.

Here's hoping

[LegacyUG] Surety v sources

2013-07-30 Thread Sue Anderson
It is all very well putting surety levels on sources, it’s surety levels on
interpretation of the sources that is my worry. I know that parish records are
a primary source but the quality is only as good as the person entering the
info. How do I know if this John Smith is correct and the one baptized in the
next parish isn’t the one. At least 10% were not baptized there may have been
yet another one. None of this is anything to do with the surety of the source.
I would like to be able to show on the family view my level of certainty of the
evidence. Something along the line of a colour for that whole line which may or
may not be correct.

Sue,

You can view step or half children now. The following instruction were found
by going to Help and then selecting Show Half siblings.

Showing Half Siblings

If you select the Show Half Brothers and Sisters box, all the children born to
either of the current individual's parents are shown. This includes children
born to the father with other wives and to the mother with other husbands.
Step children are not shown because they were not born to either the father or
the mother of the current individual.

The Sibling List is reached by clicking the Siblings icon at the bottom of the
Husb or Wife box on the Family View or by choosing Siblings List from the View
menu.

present as early as Legacy 4.0 (I do not have any earlier versions

On family view turn this on by right clicking on any child, select view,
show 1/2 kids
To show half-siblings in the sibling list
Click on the sibling icon to open the sibling list
There is a check box in the lower left to turn on half-siblings.

[LegacyUG] Windows 8

I have “returned” to Legacy having flirted with a different program and a
computer crash. I now have windows 8. I had trouble importing my ged and have
had to manually add my last years work. I didn’t follow instructions for
downloading but at the moment haven’t found any errors. I didn’t alter the UAC
to never notify and the instructions don’t say if it must be left at that
setting. I don’t understand if that setting can be just for legacy or means
that all programs are set at that and if so is that wise? Should I continue in
the hope all is well or do a clean reinstall ?
