Re: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities
I don't know the "official" answer, but this is fairly rare (in Virginia, the local government entity is either a city or a county, but cities are not part of counties). Using the normal practice of "city, county, state, country", I would put the "[city name],,Virginia, United States". Similarly, if you had a Virginia County instead, I would put ",[county name], Virginia, United States". I have "followed" the FB page for a while but even though I'm signed up for notifications, I never get one (and because of that I never remember to go to the page). Brian, Thank you for the suggestion. I did find several files "locked by Microsoft Access" that I was unable to delete, receiving the message that they were currently in use by Legacy Genealogy Software for Windows. [LegacyUG] Problem opening, backing up Legacy file
I hope some of you can help me with this problem. It began 2 days ago when I tried to open Legacy. I received the following message: "It appears that this family file is opened by another user. Basic editing and navigating is OK but there are several features that will not work correctly if more than one user is in the file. For example if one user is clearing all tagged individuals and another is tagging individuals then the two operations will conflict with each other without notice to you." I have searched for any open searches and have no problems using Legacy for data entry. When I attempt to back-up my file to close, I receive the following message: "The requested file operation cannot be performed because it appears that the family file is being used by another program. Close any other programs like Legacy Charting or other Ad-on programs that are using this family file and then click the OK button to continue or click Cancel to stop the requested operation." Thus I have not been able to back up any of my recent work. I checked my Temp Folder and found 2 files: ~DF5F4707676928CCCF.TMP and ~DF671D923BBE0BF894.TMP, relating to Legacy, which I cannot delete since they are "currently being used." Re: [LegacyUG] "Source Detail, Text/Comments" entry type sizing
Cathy, Thank you for your suggestion. I had set the font (Arial) at the minimum 10, so have decided to enlarge the data entry screen, which seems to be working. In retrospect, I have also very recently changed my computer and this laptop has a smaller screen. I believe now that this is the real problem, since there is no other option within Legacy to enlarge print within an open screen than the one you suggested. Thanks again - I appreciate all you help with others' problems as well. I learn more every day. Just recently, when I open the source detail text/comments tab to enter details on the Source, I am finding the print to be very, very, tiny - almost unreadable. [LegacyUG] LUG Face Book page - how to save an item
To make it even easier, if you are using a tablet or cellphone to view posts on FB, you can use ‘screen save’ or just select ‘save this post’. Making it very easy to find again under ‘My Saved Items’ in your own account. I save several each day as some of the tips and tricks are well worth saving to work on later. Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to decide between Rootsmagic and Legacy 8 (or just stay with FTM for now)
I agree with Ana on this one, I find the Legacy wording too stilted, but its so easy to create the report and then drop it into a word document. Looking at the sample from Linda, which is very nice, Legacy will also allow you to add your own background to a chart or tree. I created a dropline chart with a photo of each person, and used an old sepia photo of the street the family lived in as a background. When this was faded a little it looked really good and has wowed all the rellies. I found the charting chapter in the manual very helpful for this, and creating other customised charts. No, I am referring to the PDF copy of the Legacy Manual that I paid for with the V8 upgrade. You will see from the Legacy home page that one option is the V8 download only, another is V8 + PDF Manual. I believe they are on special at the moment, but this may have ended. It has several really good examples and graphics for the creation of charts, in my case I learn best by seeing other peoples examples. [LegacyUG] 'Errors' on documents
Rule 1 for genealogists – you can’t believe anything you read on a document be it a census or certificate, keep in mind that no proof was ever required that they were stating the truth. Test each piece of information as you find it, spelling of names, ages, places of birth and even birth dates can be deliberately falsified or just never known at all. I think I have at least one example of every one I have stated, and they all appear to have been fine upright citizens! The old rule of trying to find 3 pieces of evidence for each event holds good for me, as that way you may end up with 2 the same. Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor book report - spouse events
Hi Paul, Here is my solution, I select the person I want to create the report about, then select a descendants narrative report, create the PDF and save it to a folder. Next I open the PDF, then copy and paste the contents into a WORD document. This way I have the ‘bones’ of the story, and can add in pictures, newspaper clippings, certificates, etc, plus change the stilted wording. The descendants narrative report covers all children, so does not focus on any one child. Give it a try and see if this will suit your needs. [LegacyUG] A technical problem
This is the first time I have had any trouble with Legacy deluxe version, I have the latest build, and I am wondering if anyone else has encountered the following please. 1. When I try to generate a Chronology report, the first page report comes up ok, but when I click 'Report' for the final version it won't generate and says it is over a hundred pages, for a simple 17 line report. 2. When I try to generate the Family Picture Tree report and click 'preview' it shows a very small tree with a pile of boxes all on top of each other. 3. I tried to generate a Relationship Calculator report for my husband and one of his 3rd cousins, when I clicked 'print' it said 'run time error 20002 - Lead Error: Invalid bitmap handle. All this has happened since I let it download the latest update, I run Windows 7 on a Dell all in one which is 2 years old. Any help or advice would be really appreciated, I find the info at the link to the technical help extremely daunting ! I managed to have the occupations show in a chart by including them after the marriage date and place, when in the ‘family screen’. For example ‘Married 12 Oct. 1860. Barcombe, Sussex, England. I know of several instances where the named father had died a few years before the birth of the child. No proof was ever required when registration of a birth, death or marriage took place! By asking discreetly around the wider family, sometimes it is possible to get an idea of who the biological father was, once you have a surname, take a look at what the various DNA services have to offer. I also use the Descendants Book report, I save it as a PDF, then copy and paste it into a Word document. That way I can then add or subtract as much as I want, I usually add in copies of the census pages and certificates as well as any photos I have. It looks quite impressive when finished, I add in the sources at the end of the 'book' . Registration is free but space is limited. In this 30 minute webinar we'll cover the following topics: 1) AniMap software (U.S. Canada): learn how to find the correct county for the time period, and perform radius searches (list all cemeteries/churches within 10 miles of a place). For 30 years a researcher looked in the records of Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut for their ancestor who was born there in 1720. AniMap easily shows that in 1720, Woodstock would have been in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Now we know the correct location to find the records for that time period. Brick wall problem solved. 2) Centennia software (Europe and Middle East): Have you ever wondered about the changing country borders in Europe? Have ancestors in Germany, Poland, or Prussia? Which is it? The Centennia Historical Atlas software shows the changing country borders from the 11th century to the present in Europe and the Middle East. 3) Map My Family Tree software (entire world): plot your ancestors on a map of the world, track family migrations, plot to Google Earth, use the time scroll bar to dynamically select which time period you want displayed on your map and more. To do this you would have had to have clicked on the grey plus sign (coloured blue if there is an entry) at the end of the buried fields. The other would be in the Location field which follows the word in in the buried fields. If it is the former then you can Search, as you were in Detailed Search, and searching the appropriate field in the Address Book. Look down the drop-list for Where to look and you will see them. In the how to Look select contains and put the cemetery name in the last box. You may need to first check which line in the Address Book contains the name.
