Re: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2020-02-18 Thread Carolyn White via LegacyUserGroup
I don't know the "official" answer, but this is fairly rare (in Virginia, the
local government entity is either a city or a county, but cities are not part
of counties).  Using the normal practice of "city, county, state, country", I
would put the "[city name],,Virginia, United States".
Similarly, if you had a Virginia County instead, I would put ",[county name],
Virginia, United States".

I have "followed" the FB page for a while but even though I'm signed up for

It can't take that long to copy a post you just made to FB and paste
it into an email. No need to retype the entire post. The people on the
mailing list won't get the follow-ups by the group that are on the FB
page but there's no reason they can't get announcements or other
pertinent information about Legacy.

*Many email programs can thread a conversation for you.
*It's very easy to search emails - I think much easier than searching
in a FB group, esp if the emails have a good subject line.
*Sticky announcements are annoying - once I've read it, it's still
there in my face and I can't get rid of it. I can delete an email.
*If a mailing list is moderated, either members or posts, then you can
cut down on spam. In fact, I can't remember the last time I've seen
spam on any of the mailing lists I'm on. On FB, you have to wade
through all the ads that FB puts in a group. A moderated list can also
put a stop to a thread by rejecting posts
*Polls can be sent on mailing lists as well. I just responded to one
on a book list.
*I can choose to save emails that are of particular interest to me or
delete ones I have no interest in. They're all lumped together on FB.
*All the graphics on a FB page are annoying.
*Mailing lists *can* allow pictures. Up to the list owner.

I've been using FB for a few Christian groups and still not a fan - I
so wish they were mailing lists instead!

[LegacyUG] Problem opening, backing up Legacy file

2017-07-31 Thread Carolyn Smith
I hope some of you can help me with this problem. It began 2 days ago when
I tried to open Legacy. I received the following message: "It appears that
this family file is opened by another user. Basic editing and navigating is
OK but there are several features that will not work correctly if more than
one user is in the file. For example if one user is clearing all tagged
individuals and another is tagging individuals then the two operations will
conflict with each other without notice to you." I have searched for any
open searches and have no problems using Legacy for data entry.

When I attempt to back-up my file to close, I receive the following
message: "The requested file operation cannot be performed because it
appears that the family file is being used by another program. Close any
other programs like Legacy Charting or other Ad-on programs that are using
this family file and then click the OK button to continue or click Cancel
to stop the requested operation." Thus I have not been able to back up any
of my recent work.

I checked my Temp Folder and found 2 files: ~DF5F4707676928CCCF.TMP
and ~DF671D923BBE0BF894.TMP,
relating to Legacy, which I cannot delete since they are "currently being
used."
Any help with this very frustrating issue would be greatfully received!!

Re: [LegacyUG] "Source Detail, Text/Comments" entry type sizing

2017-07-23 Thread Carolyn Smith
Cathy,
Thank you for your suggestion. I had set the font (Arial) at the minimum
10, so have decided to enlarge the data entry screen, which seems to be
working. In retrospect, I have also very recently changed my computer and
this laptop has a smaller screen. I believe now that this is the real
problem, since there is no other option within Legacy to enlarge print
within an open screen than the one you suggested.
Thanks again - I appreciate all you help with others' problems as well. I
learn more every day.

[LegacyUG] "Source Detail, Text/Comments" entry type sizing

2017-07-21 Thread Carolyn Smith
Just recently, when I open the source detail text/comments tab to enter
details on the Source, I am finding the print to be very, very, tiny -
almost unreadable. If I press Ctrl+ which usually enlarges type size in
other web pages, etc, it actually makes the print even smaller. I have
changed no text size options since installing Legacy 9, other than font.

Any suggestions?

I opened the "Hints" link for an individual and minimized it so I could
more easily see the person's information on my Legacy page and now Legacy
has frozen! I can see no way to "unminimize" it (not on task bar) and

Any suggestions?

[LegacyUG] LUG Face Book page - how to save an item

2016-04-07 Thread Carolyn
To make it even easier, if you are using a tablet or cellphone to view posts on
FB, you can use ‘screen save’ or just select ‘save this post’. Making it very
easy to find again under ‘My Saved Items’ in your own account. I save
several each day as some of the tips and tricks are well worth saving to work
on later.

One of the mailing lists got shut down...but so many use fb now...the lists are

Searching fb for posts is very easy... just like using google...

Since there is no longer a way to access the old posts except by downloading

Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to decide between Rootsmagic and Legacy 8 (or just stay with FTM for now)

2015-12-13 Thread Carolyn
I agree with Ana on this one, I find the Legacy wording too stilted, but its so
easy to create the report and then drop it into a word document.
Looking at the sample from Linda, which is very nice, Legacy will also allow
you to add your own background to a chart or tree.
I created a dropline chart with a photo of each person, and used an old sepia
photo of the street the family lived in as a background.
When this was faded a little it looked really good and has wowed all the
rellies.

I found the charting chapter in the manual very helpful for this, and creating
other customised charts.

No, I am referring to the PDF copy of the Legacy Manual that I paid for with
the V8 upgrade.
You will see from the Legacy home page that one option is the V8 download only,
another is V8 + PDF Manual. I believe they are on special at the moment, but
this may have ended.
It has several really good examples and graphics for the creation of charts, in
my case I learn best by seeing other peoples examples.

[LegacyUG] 'Errors' on documents

2015-10-23 Thread Carolyn
Rule 1 for genealogists – you can’t believe anything you read on a document be
it a census or certificate, keep in mind that no proof was ever required that
they were stating the truth.
Test each piece of information as you find it, spelling of names, ages, places
of birth and even birth dates can be deliberately falsified or just never known
at all.
I think I have at least one example of every one I have stated, and they all
appear to have been fine upright citizens!

The old rule of trying to find 3 pieces of evidence for each event holds good
for me, as that way you may end up with 2 the same.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Companion

2014-03-25 Thread Carolyn
I added the occupation after the date and place of marriage, so that it will
show up on a Legacy chart. It was the only way I could get it included in the
box.
Not perfect, but it works for me, hopefully it will be added to the options one
day.

Re: [LegacyUG] Chronology report - options not working

2014-01-06 Thread carolyn
Thanks Brian,
I have continued to tick and untick the options, and find that I can have bmd
for whole family or events, but not both.
For some females I do get both to show, but for random ones its one or the
other.
These are all events and bmd that occured during the selected persons lifespan.
Looking forward to a solution, many thanks for your time.

There is a known problem in Chronology view for females. The error is
related to the setting for individual events in the chronology view. A
problem report has been submitted to have this fixed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor book report - spouse events

2013-11-19 Thread Carolyn
Hi Paul,

Here is my solution, I select the person I want to create the report about,
then select a descendants narrative report, create the PDF and save it to a
folder.
Next I open the PDF, then copy and paste the contents into a WORD document.
This way I have the ‘bones’ of the story, and can add in pictures, newspaper
clippings, certificates, etc, plus change the stilted wording.
The descendants narrative report covers all children, so does not focus on any
one child.
Give it a try and see if this will suit your needs.

[LegacyUG] A technical problem

2013-10-17 Thread Carolyn
This is the first time I have had any trouble with Legacy deluxe version, I
have the latest build, and I am wondering if anyone else has encountered the
following please.

1. When I try to generate a Chronology report, the first page report comes
up ok, but when I click 'Report' for the final version it won't generate and
says it is over a hundred pages, for a simple 17 line report.
2. When I try to generate the Family Picture Tree report and click 'preview'
it shows a very small tree with a pile of boxes all on top of each other.
3. I tried to generate a Relationship Calculator report for my husband and
one of his 3rd cousins, when I clicked 'print' it said 'run time error
20002 - Lead Error: Invalid bitmap handle.

All this has happened since I let it download the latest update, I run
Windows 7 on a Dell all in one which is 2 years old.
Any help or advice would be really appreciated, I find the info at the link
to the technical help extremely daunting !

Thanks

Hello;
For some reason we have double triple entries on my wife's Legacy Family File

Is it possible to download this file on a flash drive for someone else?  Is
there people out there that do this type of thing?  And what would be the fee

[LegacyUG] Chart showing occupation

2013-04-29 Thread Carolyn
I managed to have the occupations show in a chart by including them after the
marriage date and place, when in the
‘family screen’. For example ‘Married 12 Oct. 1860. Barcombe, Sussex, England.
Occupation Blacksmith.’
This was the only way that worked, but makes such a difference to the chart.

Re: [LegacyUG] I had 1 father and a different sire.

2012-06-13 Thread Carolyn
I know of several instances where the named father had died a few years
before the birth of the child.
No proof was ever required when registration of a birth, death or marriage
took place!
By asking discreetly around the wider family, sometimes it is possible to
get an idea of who the biological father was, once you have a surname, take
a look at what the various DNA services have to offer.

I also use the Descendants Book report, I save it as a PDF, then copy and
paste it into a Word document.
That way I can then add or subtract as much as I want, I usually add in
copies of the census pages and certificates as well as any photos I have.
It looks quite impressive when finished, I add in the sources at the end of
the 'book' .

Re: [LegacyUG] Join us for a webinar on September 15 - Mapping Software for Genealogists

registration message says?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Join us for a webinar on September 15 - Mapping Software for
Genealogists

Join us for our first-ever live webinar on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at
2:00PM EDT. The webinar, Mapping Software for Genealogists will cover
essential software tools: AniMap (U.S. Canada), Centennia (Europe Middle
East), and Map My Family Tree (entire world), and maybe even a Legacy Family
Tree tip or two.

Registration is free but space is limited.

In this 30 minute webinar we'll cover the following topics:

1) AniMap software (U.S. Canada): learn how to find the correct county for
the time period, and perform radius searches (list all cemeteries/churches
within 10 miles of a place). For 30 years a researcher looked in the records
of Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut for their ancestor who was born
there in 1720. AniMap easily shows that in 1720, Woodstock would have been
in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Now we know the correct location to find
the records for that time period. Brick wall problem solved.

2) Centennia software (Europe and Middle East): Have you ever wondered about
the changing country borders in Europe? Have ancestors in Germany, Poland,
or Prussia? Which is it? The Centennia Historical Atlas software shows the
changing country borders from the 11th century to the present in Europe and
the Middle East.

3) Map My Family Tree software (entire world): plot your ancestors on a map
of the world, track family migrations, plot to Google Earth, use the time
scroll bar to dynamically select which time period you want displayed on
your map and more.

Join Legacy Family Tree's Geoff Rasmussen as he demonstrates these powerful
software programs. If you have questions that you would like answered during
the webinar, send us an email at ge...@legacyfamilytree.com. Geoff is the
presenter of the Legacy Family Tree learning CDs.

Registration is free but space is limited. Visit
https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/820005801 to register.

How does it work?
After you register you will be sent instructions, including your private
link to view the webinar online. You will need to be connected to the
Internet (high speed connection recommended) and turn on your speakers.
That's it!

Door prizes
All attendees have a chance to win a door prize. We might even throw in a
special coupon too for use in our online store. Whatever your incentive is
to attend our first-ever live webinar, we look forward to seeing you there.

Thanks,

Geoff Rasmussen

Rich,
Thanks so much. Your explanation worked. I got a list of all people buried
in Mewhinney Cemetery by using your suggestion.

The one question you asked I understand. When you search for a place using

all the periods and spaces must match also.

 Carolyn,

I am having dfficulty in understanding exactly where you have entered the
details, and in particular the name of the Cemetery. It reads as though you
have probably put them in the Address Book. To do this you would have had
 to
have clicked on the grey plus sign (coloured blue if there is an entry) at
the end of the buried fields.

The other would be in the Location field which follows the word in in the
 buried fields.

If it is the former then you can Search, as you were in Detailed Search,
 and
searching the appropriate field in the Address Book. Look down the
 drop-list
for Where to look and you will see them. In the how to Look select
contains and put the cemetery name in the last box. You may need to first
check which line in the Address Book contains the name.

In the second case choose Burial Place and again use contains rather
 than equals.

If you have entered the data in a different way, or hit a problem, please
come back to us, giving very precise details.

I am trying to find an easier way to find any of my ancestors, especially
Wyeths buried in Mewhinney Cemetery in Vigo County, Indiana. I have the
cemetery listed under burial rather than the date and the town, county and
state listed in the next field. Would someone be kind enough to explain to
me how to do that. I have been trying to do it under the detailed search
 but
am not having any luck. I know there are some buried there but not sure who
and I have someone that will take pictures of the tombstone if I can give
 him names.
Thanks for any help someone will give me.

This is the first I heard of the 'LegacyFS User Group'. Is it being hosted by
Legacy, or someone else?
