There are two ways to transfer a file to the iPad. First via USB cable, for
which you will require iTunes. Second via Wi-Fi, for which you need a Wi-Fi
connection and need to have Bonjour installed - this is installed as part of
iTunes, so generally it is best to install iTunes whichever transfer method you
use.

Hello again
I am in the stages of using Family sync to transfer my legacy files to our ipad
2 I am wondering if I need to have itunes installed on my pc side of my imac
(have it already on the mac side) to be able to use and transfer these files to
my ipad. Or will it work without installing itunes on the pac.
I have downloaded Families on my ipad in the ready.
