RE: [LegacyUG] How long have you used Legacy?

2009-12-21 Thread SgtBob
I believe I have been using Legacy for 2-3 versions - at least 3 years. Great
program , I liek it a lot better thatn the other 4,5,6 programs I tried
over the last 20 years - just wish there was a MAC version to preclude me
jumping through Virtual MAachine hoops to use it. :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] How long have you used Legacy?

2009-12-20 Thread William H. Boswell
I just started using it this year after putting it off since last year. I had
been a faithful user of Family Tree Maker from about version 3 to 2010 until I
found the company just doesn't want to cater to genealogists so I sent back FTM
2010 for a refund and switched everything over to Legacy. I'm still cleaning
up my sources and it'll probably be another year before it's finished.

I wish I had moved to Legacy years ago because there are more features and
tools than FTM will ever have. The problem with the later versions of FTM is
once you get the information in and reorganized, it's impossible to export it
into a usable format for other programs except GEDCOM. I had also used The
Master Genealogist from version 4 to 7, but it was too complicated to produce
reports so I dumped it too.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How long have you used Legacy?

I mentioned in a message yesterday that I'd been using Legacy for a
couple of years - well, hold the phone!
I just ran across my first password for Deluxe Legacy v.4. I've been
using Legacy since September 2003 - for more than 6 years. Time sure
flies when you're having fun, eh?
One would think that, in all that time, I might have read the help
files, watched the training videos or even looked at the sample file.
Nope, not til this week :)
If you're new to Legacy - or even an "I'll just do it intuitively"
long-time user like me, my one piece of New Year's advice would be to do
all of the above and save yourself a lot of time and trouble.
Happy Holidays, Everybody!
Deborah

My New Year's resolution is to try out every last entry in all the
headers (File, Edit, Add, View, etc.) across the top of the screen so I
have a good feel for what they all do. Many thanks to the person who
pointed out Picture Centre. It is excellent. I spent a couple of hours
last night going through it and saved a good amount of space on my
 crowded hard drive.

Another advantage is that it will spare you the personal embarrassment
of asking questions when the answers are in front of your nose. And
thank you everyone for being tactful enough not to mention that if I'd
explored the program, I wouldn't be asking these questions.

Re: [LegacyUG] How long have you used Legacy?

2009-12-20 Thread Margaret Turner
I've been a happy Legacy user since 1998 perhasp 1997.
I am slowly changing and learning begining with names, standard events
and "head" photos.

Slowly moving with census images, documents (certificates,
transcripts, military, electoral rolls, ..).

:) :)

Re: [LegacyUG] How long have you used Legacy?

2009-12-20 Thread Deborah Trounstine
Good point, Helen. I agree that working with the program has given me a
good idea of what I DON'T know and need to learn.
The biggest problem that I have created for myself is in how I manage my
events and my sourcing. I could have made a plan for how I was going to
do this if I'd studied Legacy more before I plunged in with a huge
family file. A good example of this is just deciding how you're going to
enter the census data, or newspaper articles. By individual person, by
date, by title? If you decide before you start, then it's easy to find
the items and you have consistency for reports.
I came to Legacy after using a less sophisticated program and just
continued my old habits. So I revise my advice. It's a good idea to
familiarize yourself with the program but before you do any _major_
entry work, it's a good idea to learn how Legacy works best. We all
spend so much time and money researching, it seems worthwhile to learn
to use the software so that re-doing our entry work doesn't become a
another huge expenditure when it doesn't have to.
Oh, and ditto from me on the embarrassment! :)

Re: [LegacyUG] How long have you used Legacy?

2009-12-20 Thread circe
The problem with Help files or training videos is that they're
meaningless until you've tried out the program and get a feel for how it
works. Of course by that time, you're familiar with everything and don't
bother checking what all the bells and whistles do.

Helen

[LegacyUG] How long have you used Legacy?

2009-12-20 Thread Deborah Trounstine
Deborah
