Re: [LegacyUG] Importing info from someone else's research

2016-05-26 Thread Sherry/Support
Which is one of the reasons the default option for an import is to import
into a new Family File. Then you can review the file to make sure the data
is valid and in good order before you import it into your own data file.

We have an article in our Knowledge Base on "File Import and Clean Up" at
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00922

And these are the ones that might be of most use to the OP:

GEDmagic Products - Text2GED
Text2GED quickly and accurately converts genealogy data displayed in a web
browser into standard GEDCOM 5.5 file format.

Sorky's Place - Genealogy - 1
Family Tree Helper's main purpose is converting TXT to GED file with almost
any text layout as it has user configurable rules to identify spouses,
children and events.

GCU Introduction
GCU is a GEDCOM Conversion Utility which can be used to convert any of five
(5) types of genealogical descendancy charts into a GEDCOM Standard Release
5.5 file.

Ask the fellow researcher how they produced the file and if they can send you
a Gedcom file, if it was produced from a genealogy program.

If not, the only way to save typing would be to copy and paste each item
individually into Legacy, and typing might be faster, depending on how fast
you can type.

If you want a Gedcom or Legacy file of it to merge with your own file, get back
to the researcher and ask for it in that format.
You can attach the rtf file to the Source for it that you create. In the Media
Gallery for the Master Source link as a Document.
Remember that their sources are not yours until you've seen the actual source
they used.

I'd be wanting to hand enter it and check it as I went.

Thank you for taking the time to read about this. I hope you have an

But do check his info before you import it, not everyone believes in
proving all the links.

Brenda:

Have the fellow researcher send you a GEDCOM file of his data. Then you
can import that into Legacy.
If he has Legacy 8, then it would be better if he could send you a Legacy
file with the people you have in common - no import, you just do a merge of
the two databases.
