Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy and Drop Box

2016-06-27 Thread Jamie Poindexter

Martha, Don,

The application installs on the computer, not Dropbox. DB won't let you
install executables on its servers. I use Dropbox to store all files
related to my gen data. But before I open Legacy, RootsMagic or TMG, I
turn syncing with Dropbox off. Then open my app and the files. After I
close or exit the application, I turn DB syncing back on. Do this
because when working with database tables, such as Legacy, the
application sometimes can mess up the data if Dropbox syncing is running
slow due to Internet congestion.

This works because you are actually working with files that are in a
Dropbox folder on your C drive. When syncing is turned on, that folder
is synchronized with DB in the cloud, and with other computers logged
into your DB account. Turning off sync allows Legacy to update the C
drive copy of your Dropbox folder without delay.

So the only issue about how much space one has on Dropbox comes into
play when figuring the size of your Legacy data content. I was building
up free space by inviting others to use Dropbox. But now I back up
everything on it so have a 1 terabyte subscription.

My largest gen database is in The Mater Genealogist (TMG) and is about
700Mb with over 45,000 people in it. TMG is installed on my C drive.
The data tables (files) are stored in the Dropbox folder on my C drive,
thus also in the Dropbox cloud. I once messed up my database when I
forgot to turn off sync while entering data. I had to use a backup to
rebuild. So always make frequent backups when using Dropbox to share data.

Hope this was useful.
Jamie

Those files are the ones with the following extensions and are for the

Crosley-27Jun2016~Rc3.ldb
Crosley-27Jun2016~Rc3.Rc3
Crosley-27Jun2016.TC

All the rest of the Legacy files are in the default location.

I have never had any problems with this system.
The path: c:\users\MarthaAG\Dropbox\Legacy\Data\
I also have a Backup Folder in my Dropbox.

If Don is trying to install the whole legacy program into his dropbox,
the problem might be one of space.

How much storage space do you have Don?
