[LegacyUG] Link to mother only
I had a similar problem and the procedure I adopted was 1. Unlink the child from everyone. 2. Get to the child through the name list and make them the main person in the pedigree view. 3. Right-click the child and use "Add Mother" and then "Link to an existing Person". Then select the Mother. This gives an new marriage for the mother, with no husband(or, strictly speaking, an unknown husband). There will be a marriage record but the father will show as unknown. You can then modify the marriage to say "this couple never married", if you want. Re: [LegacyUG] Link to mother only
All children are linked to the marriage record of their parents. If the marriage record only has one spouse, then that's what you put in. A marriage record does not mean there is a marriage but a record which connects two people in an arrangement usually formalized by marriage. Sometimes the unknown spouse is entered as Given Names = "Unknown" until you discover what the name is. [LegacyUG] Link to mother only
I am working with the record of a child (Edward) who appears in the 1880 census with the name of his step-father (Dollings) so I entered him as a child of the marriage. However I was suspicious because the step-dad would have been much too young when he was born (mother is older). Following this lead I found a marriage record for the child using his mother's maiden name (Ford) as his surname and with his step-dad vouching for his age for the marriage. So, all other records for this child after the 1880 census show him with the surname Ford. I have unlinked him from the couple and need to link him to his mother only. How can I do this? I don't believe his mother was married (her death certificate shows her maiden name) when this child was born unless her husband had the same surname as her maiden name.
