[LegacyUG] Picture File Locations
The most important thing to remember is that filenames should be unique across all directories used by Legacy. This is a restriction of the way Legacy stores file names and locations. If you get it wrong (I did in the early days) it can be almost impossible to sort out. So, if you have two Mary Smiths in your database and each has a scan called "Birth Certificate - Mary Smith.jpg" then you are heading for trouble, even if they are in different folders. To solve this, I include the RIN (In) for an individual or the MRIN (M) for a marriage in EVERY file relating to a person. Images relating to loctions are more difficult, but you still have to keep the names unique. The second most important thing is to ensure that there aren't any spaces in file names if you intend to put the files onto the web. I let Legacy rename my files when it creates web pages, so I don't have an issue here, but some folk do. Other than that, whatever works for you is best. Good point. Use the "Rename" in the Picture Center. It will change the file name on the disk drive and maintain the links to it in the Legacy database. Others will offer more detailed advice, but I have to say, One important thing to remember is as your moving scans, DON'T change the name, Legacy wont find it and you'll have to relink each scan to each fact its sourced to. Larry, This is an issue where there are as many recommendations as there are people. Everybody has their own system, and if it works for them, that’s all that counts. You can find lots of discussions/suggestions in the archives. One of the pitfalls is ensuring that the links in Legacy get updated to the new location. If you use Windows Explorer to move the photos to another folder, Legacy’s link is still pointing to the old location. Legacy has some ability to update links to the new location, but others can comment on that more than I can. I’ve never done it. I know it can automatically update when you have just changed a directory (e.g. moved all photos from let’s say C:\Pictures to C:\Pics), but in your case it’s sounds like they are all over the place. Is there an EASY way to re-organize these materials (perhaps one folder for photographs of individuals or places, another for document images) for Legacy? And, what pitfalls should I watch out for as I re-organize?
