RE: [LegacyUG] Spaces in file names Was - What to do with genealogical files after death of compi ler
Bob, You are correct, that using the ampersand on its own is a risk, and your post also shows why, it has other uses or meanings in html - normally no problem, but potentially a problem. To deal with other points made. Lee, you may have no problems with your server, and the problems are more to do with servers than PCs, but that does not mean it is true fir all. For some ron ferguson.jpg will be fine, but others can change it to ron%20ferguson.jpg which is not the same and the image will not be visible. As always, safety first. JLB I really am not paranoid about this, but I have seen too many instances where problems have been caused. I am aware that there is software available which will rewrite file names substituting hyphens or underscores, but I feel that it is better to get it right in the first place. In a way it is like Windows reading upper and lower case the same whereas servers do not, so it is best not to mix the cases unless one adopts a system eg. RonFerguson.jpg. This is why I do mention it whenever I spot potential future problems. Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ GOONS #5307 Robert Austen rgaus...@telus.net wrote: Hi Ron, Thanks for this. Ron, I wasn't saying that you're wrong about what you said, just that it's not necessary to go changing all the file names on your computer unless you plan on uploading your files to the web. The few that I do upload I change prior. It's a different batch of work. Of course, if you're linking your files to Legacy (which I don't) and creating web pages from Legacy (which I don't) then, yes, you might as well get it right the first time. Hyphenate and ampersand away there. --- JL Beeken JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www.jgen.ws/jlog/ On 10/15/2012 1:36 AM, Ron Ferguson wrote: Bob, You are correct, that using the ampersand on its own is a risk, and your post also shows why, it has other uses or meanings in html - normally no problem, but potentially a problem.
