Re: [LegacyUG] This letter (Â). What does it signify?

2014-12-17 Thread Jerry
Yeah and speaking of grammar, I see I used /then/ when it should have
been /than/ below - got in a hurry. The reason so many of those A's
appeared was because I used lots of spaces, then typed my name. I am
wondering if using the TAB key would be a different result. I will try
it here.I just used three tabs. Thanks to the person who
brought this up - I had asked before years ago and got no answer.
 Three tabs again, Jerry

I suspect it has always been different in England, because from 70 ago onwards
we were taught a single space after a sentence.

Re: [LegacyUG] This letter (Â). What does it signify?

2014-12-17 Thread gerald

Oh, man, did you ever get a lot of them!! It usually indicates that our email program didn't understand what you wrote, so puts in a symbol because it didn't know what else to say!

I work for a firm that does a lot of publishing, so whenever articles are written, I have to go through them and remove double spaces after sentences (and correct other formatting) because the publishing software can't process them. It can be a pain sometimes if I have 61 pages! But as you say, some of the "older" generation learned to type with 2 spaces after a period at the end of a sentence (as did I) and it takes a lot of worrk to un-do a habit and create a new one. They don't need to re-learn since they have me! LOL

The word-processing programs create a larger space at the end of sentences so we don't need to put them in. They also start a sentence with an uppercase letter, and we don't have to do that either. Except some programs don't, so I have to go back and correct myself and put them in. That's why most kids today have such poor grammar, with no punctuation or uppercase letters. They don't need to do it!!

RE: [LegacyUG] This letter (Â). What does it signify?

2014-12-17 Thread CE WOOD
Just a note. I too, always used two spaces between sentences because that was
grammatically correct in the past.

The new rules of grammar, as taught in schools and professional writing course
specifies one space between sentences. This occurred with the rise of
computers. Editors receiving copy with two spaces, must change all of them
before publishing. I learned the hard way when I was told to make the
corrections before they would publish.

Perhaps the (Â) was developed to make it easier to identify the offending
spacing.

Re: [LegacyUG] This letter (Â). What does it signify?

2014-12-16 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Charles,

It is something to do with the mailing list software not interpreting
the text of a submitted post, as far as I can see.

If I forget I'm writing a LUG post and type as I normally would, when I
receive my own copy of the post it will have those characters placed
where I had typed two spaces, as I normally do between sentences. If I
put one space (as there is at the start of this sentence), there's no
funny A. But if there are two spaces (as there are here, deliberately),
there is. (Now to hope that it behaves as predicted, and you see what I
intend you to see!)

Just ignore it, it is meaningless here.

Impossible to say without knowing where you run into it.

If you're seeing it in posts to this list the most likely answer is that
someone has used a special character that your mail program is not
interpreting correctly.
