Re: [LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

2012-09-10 Thread Laura Johnson
GeneaQuilts uses a gedcom file to form their chart
Progeny's version is in their Charting Companion. I ordered the
Charting Companion for Legacy. You can order it for several programs
like FTM as well). When I open the program, it automatically searched
for my Legacy files, and created a list of the files available. Then I
chose the file I wanted and then it created the chart from that file
which was not a gedcom file.

IF your family file is small and everyone is connected to one another,
it works fine. I exported only one of my direct lines to a smaller file
(roughly 900 people descended from one person). It created the file ok
without a lot of problems or waiting. Still, the more generations there
are, the more confusing the Trellis becomes. With 14 generations it was
almost impossible to follow it.

Using my full file for the one location study in Termini (58000+
people), there are too many families that are NOT connected to others.
It tries inserting these families wherever it can and they do not really
fit. 4 generations was an astronomically large number of pages and I
once it went past the first generation, I couldn't see a full generation
on the monitor at one time on a 22" monitor.

Tim,
Can you tell from the functionality description (or can you test your software)
if this chart could be produced for any lineage?
One thing lacking in Legacy is the ability to print a lineage report from me to
my Rev War Patriot, because my lineage goes through my mother and her mother
before becoming completely patriarchal. (Yes, I've already submitted a
suggestion, complete with suggestion for where the logic already exists in the
program to do this.) (And I have LTools, which produces a DAR lineage report,
but the alignment is not great.)
Just asking if this Trellis chart could be the answer for me.
Thanks,

I received an email mailshot from Prodgeny before this list appeared. I have

of because I have been keen to be able to use the matrix style chart (Prodgeny

I have a large main database and when using it to view the Trellis chart it is
like watching paint dry as it gathers the names. I tried it using a smaller
family file (about 200 names) and it loaded very quickly.
There is a company called GeneaQuilts, who might just be the originator of the
system and offer a free download and show very good examples of large and small
files. I have not downloaded their program yet, however I am tempted.
I had emailed Legacy a while ago about the possibility of them adding it to
their charting program, and they informed me that it was something they were
considering.

Re: [LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

2012-09-09 Thread Laura Johnson
It was not in my version 3 but is in Version 4. I just downloaded the
new upgrade and tried it. With a little over 58000+ names in my file,
the chart is projected to be 178 pages wide by 798 pages long for the
all inclusive. I tried to just do a Trellis for one person (my
great-grandfather) in my family but it seems to include all of the
relatives of that one person. I told it to only do 4 generations.
Definitely not a chart print for me. More than a couple of generations
and it is hard to read.

RE: [LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

2012-09-09 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Hi Tim,

Yes, the Trellis cart is new, however it is a part of Charting Companion
according to the information at the Prodgeny Software web site. Unfortunately
the site does not state whether this chart is an addition to version 3, or is
part of a new version 4 release. I am hoping for a bit more information from
the company.

Best,

Denise L. Moss-Fritch

Prodgeny Software, the creator of a few Legacy addons (Legacy Charting
Companion, Map My Family Tree, Genlines), has created a new 'all in one'
chart.

 From their webpage:

" The Trellis chart is a new way to tell the story of your family.
Unlike traditional box charts, the Trellis can show all the people in your
tree, even those who are not in the direct bloodline. Your ancestors and
descendants are listed by row within their generation. Members of a family are
grouped by columns."
