Re: [LegacyUG] US Army discharge not available in SourceWriter

2013-01-25 Thread SLeaseman
I did consider that format, but since this is not a family generated
source/artifact, I felt that that guideline was not entirely correct or even
close to describing an original federal document. This situation is somewhat
like me owning the original of the Declaration of Independence. Who was
the originater of the document and how do I correctly source it?

EE 3.25 does not help me in listing the source for the document. Is it
the Army, federal government, War Department, Ft. Leonard Wood, etc.? I was
hoping for a more direct and specific listing in SourceWriter for just
discharge papers without all the extra modifiers.

Re: [LegacyUG] US Army discharge not available in SourceWriter

2013-01-25 Thread SLeaseman
I think you might be confused. I have an original document produced by
the United States Army. I do not know how to correctly list the source and
describe it. Mill and Legacy do not have a way to source the document. I
have suggested to Legacy that they incorporate a way to source this document
in SourceWriter. I can't believe that I have the only document like this
that is an honorable discharge document.

Thanks to all who have attempted to help me list this document. I will
continue to ponder the way to list this document.

It sounds like the document was never duplicated in the official records.
Look in the US Army discharge to 'prove' this did not happen, by going
page
to page. IMHO, you need to find your document in the batch it belonged to.
You may need to contact someone to learn procedures to append into other
batches?

Re: [LegacyUG] US Army discharge not available in SourceWriter

2013-01-21 Thread SLeaseman
Marie:

Following your suggestion I did not find what I thought to be an
appropriate guide. Jurisdiction for my situation was not addressed. The type
of
document was not mentioned. Mills discussed deeds, transfers and all sorts
of other legal document originated at local or state levels. The document I
possess is a typewritten two sided original honorable discharge with
type-overs and other typing errors. It has an original fountain pen signature.
This document was handed to my father in 1943 as he was discharged. The
document was produced by the US Army at Fort Leonard Wood.

I was hoping that a choice for a source existed in Source Writer. Who has
jurisdiction for the origination of this kind document ( it has a form
number and is actually a pretty document with the Army eagle on it's face)?
Is it the US Army, Ft. Leonard Wood, or is it the United States as
originator?

As an aside this document has caused consternation and some turmoil several
times in the past when it has been presented at the request for military
service and discharge confirmation since it is not the usual DD 214. So
the problem surrounding this form continues to exist. If you can suggest how
I might make a custom source citation I would be grateful.

Thanks, Stuart

Re: [LegacyUG] US Army discharge not available in SourceWriter

2013-01-19 Thread MVMcgrs
Stuart,

Elizabeth covers documents and manuscripts. According to you your WWII
discharge is an original document. Check page 868 [EE] in the index for
"original records."

I may have missed the place to choose discharge records but I don't think

so. SourceWriter does not have a choice in Military records for this
source to be added. I have an original WW II document of discharge (not

and would like to have a specific source to list this document. I can
only find registers and and other reference to sources other than
original
discharge documents. Mills does not address this record type in her book
either. I have this document described in notes for facts/events but
again
would like to have a proper way to use SourceWriter for this document.
How
should I proceed.
