Re: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

2011-10-30 Thread Bob Rowe

I don't have any first hand experience with this, but I don't see why Legacy
wouldn't work fine on Windows 7 Starter. Stripped down mostly means that the OS
doesn't have all the fancy graphic stuff because of the limited graphics card,
processor, and memory. Legacy doesn't require or use any fancy graphics. It
will run fine on any 'base' machine. I think that Starter is a terrible name
for an 'base' Operating System. I think people see it as being substandard. If
you thrive on all the fancy graphics then I guess it is substandard. A basic
Chevy will take you to all the same places that a Cadillac will.

I am being offered a Netbook for a good price. The problem is it has Windows 7

Several Internet sites said the Starter version was really stripped down, so
I want to be certain first. I want to be sure it will accommodate Legacy,

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

2011-10-30 Thread Charles Apple
Robert, this could also indicate a Red Flag. Before deciding check out the
graphics card, processor, and memory capacity. If these meet Your
requirements for Your specific intended use of the Netbook, then the Windows
Starter OS, or base OS as Bob pointed out, should work just fine. As Bob point
out, Starter is a stripped down version of the Windows OS. Unfortunately, I
have never used Windows 7 starter version, and cannot comment on its
reliability, from experience.

I have an HP netbook with Windows 7 Starter, and Legacy works fine on it. The
netbook just works a bit slower than what you're used to and you can't have
very many programs open at the same time on it, but for working in libraries or
traveling, it's a great resource because it's fairly lightweight.

Robert,

I have a Dell netbook with Windows 7 Starter on it and my Legacy works fine
with it. I only use it for travelling and going to the library or
genealogy meetings because the screen is so small and I don't see well, but
other than that, it works fine for me. I use dropbox so it stays up to
date.

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

2011-10-30 Thread Sheri Harris
Robert,

I purchased an Acer netbook in March 2011. It has Win 7 starter along with
MS Office starter. Legacy works just fine and have even been able to
multitask, ie have Legacy, Excel and a browser open. Although I don't have
all my family fines on the netbook, I do have it networked to connect to my
desktop which runs Win XP. I have dropbox and evernote on my netbook,
desktop and smartphone, so I have my basic info when and where ever I need
it.

Hope this helps.

Some of the photos are super high definition. (Too high really, the photo

I guess I am looking for a Chevy I can plug large picture files into.

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

2011-10-30 Thread Bob Rowe
What you are talking about does not require fancy graphics. Very high rez
photos should be trimmed down for this purpose, however. The best you are going
to get on a computer screen is 96 dots per inch [DPI]. If you have really high
rez, they are going to be 1200 dpi or there abouts. If you have a lot of photos
like that you will fill a CD very quickly if you are going to share your tree
[and related photos] with family members.
