Bookmarked!
I got as far as typing the first three letters of a query and the system popped
up the right issue, and the solution, immediately. Excellent!

2014-01-04 Thread Sherry/Support
Alex,

There are instructions in the Knowledge Base on resolving the Language
file error

There are two different articles, depending on whether it refers to
Legacy7.LNG or Legacy8.LNG

Go to our website www.LegacyFamilyTree.com > Help Center >
Troubleshooting Help and just type in "language file" (without the
quotes) in the search box.

The instructions are different because the file that needs to be
removed is in a different folder in v7.5 and earlier than in v8
install.

I'm really surprised that more Legacy users don't take advantage of
the great Help information on our website!

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Upgrade and problems thereby

2014-01-04 Thread Alex MacPhee
Sherry,
Sorry, I may have been sloppy in how I phrased what I'd done, and interchanged
these terms upgrade and update. However, this is what I did :
- When I migrated from 7.5 to 8, I did so by making the online payment to get a
new customer number, and following the download link in the confirmation e-mail
that came from Legacy Customer Service. That took me to the website, and the
download happened from there, as it should.
The problem I had with incorrect language file version happened immediately on
launch after installation.
- In order to update to the next build level, I did that from the Legacy Home
Tab.
The file version problem still manifested itself on launching. That's when I
came to the mailing list for help.
I'm sorry if I confused with my lack of clarity, but the process I followed was
precisely the one advised. It wasn't a major problem ; I merely mention to
Bryan that if someone has an installation problem, it does not follow that the
user didn't follow the recommended process.

2014-01-04 Thread Sherry/Support
Upgrade and update are two different things.

You update a current version through the Updates section on the Legacy Home tab.

You upgrade by downloading the newer version from our website. Once
the newer version is installed, again you'll install updates for that
version through the Legacy Home tab.

>I followed exactly what was recommended for the upgrade without any problem
I also followed exactly the recommended upgrade process, which I've done ever
since v5, specifically by loading the upgrade from within my registered copy of
Legacy, and which is advertised as the preferred method for Legacy users. This
time, I had a problem. Not a show-stopper, for sure, but enough to have me ask
for advice on this list. I tried the re-installation process three times, as
instructed, and each time, I had the same problem. It was resolved with kind
help from others on this list, but it certainly didn't originate, for me at
least, in any variation from the standard upgrade process.

For the life of me I cannot understand why people want to interfere with the
way programmers, more knowledgeable than us, have structured the download and
upgrade process. If they don’t follow the recommendations, on their head be
it.I followed exactly what was recommended for the upgrade without any problem,
and then went on to discover the new program from there. To my mind individuals
who follow their own whims in an upgrade deserve the difficulties they have
generated.
