Thank you, Connie, for that most helpful explanation. I use Legacy de-luxe (regularly updated), so will have a search for 'Sourcewriter'. I'll also do a Google search on 'Evidence Explained' (I haven't seen it mentioned on UK genealogy websites). RE: [LegacyUG] Research Guidance - To-Do List - Source Writer
SourceWriter was introduced more than 2 years ago; if you have never upgraded from Legacy 6.0 or earlier, you won't have it. It may also not be available in the free version? It is a set of templates for writing source citations that are in compliance in terms of content and format with Evidence Explained (the American "Bible" for how to write genealogy sources). It allows printing the information in three different formats [Bibliography, Footnote/Endnote, and Subsequent (or short) Citation]. A source written with Basic format will print exactly the same in all three situations, whereas a SourceWriter will print differently depending upon whether you have asked for a bibliography or footnotes/endnotes. I have never had the "name of the source" changed when exporting to GEDCOM (but it may depend upon which program you are exporting to). And I have almost never had the detail of the source not transfer (there was one template many months ago where that was true, but Legacy fixed it). It is my experience that the entire Sourcewriter data transfers to GEDCOM; it just gets "mixed up" or "scrambled" when the GEDCOM is opened in another program. The problem is with GEDCOM, not with Legacy, and Legacy is not the only program to have this problem. Re: [LegacyUG] Research Guidance - To-Do List - Source Writer
Can I ask a really basic question? I have been using Legacy ( in conjunction with GenoPro for it's superb charting) for at least 10 years, but had never heard of 'Sourcewriter' until I joined this forum. What is 'Sourcewriter'? What does it do? How do you access it? Where is the manual about it?
