I am looking for two excellent PhD students and one Postdoctoral research for 
my project 'Data activism: The politics of big data according to civil 
society'. The five-year project has been awarded a Starting Grant of the 
European Research Council, and will be based at the Department of Media Studies 
of the University of Amsterdam. (Please note that a second position for a 
Postdoctoral researcher will be advertised in two years time).

You will join a team of five people working under the leadership of Dr. 
Stefania Milan (the PI) and collaboratively examining the emerging dynamics of 
data activism at the intersection of its social and technological dimensions. 
We offer a multidisciplinary, interactive and international research 
environment in a leading department (Communication and Media Studies at the 
University of Amsterdam currently ranks number 8 in the QS World Rankings).

Important dates:
deadline for application: 9 June
Interviews (via Skype): 19 June

Web technologies are more and more employed in addressingresearch issues in 
political and social sciences, like social semantic web, web mining,network 
theory, agent based modeling, , discourse analysis,  and sentiment analysis. 
Along with thecomputational modeling and simulation methodologies, they offer 
an amazingarsenal of tools and instruments as well as concept and theories 
which can beemployed in the evaluation of the content of political discourse, 
the dynamicsof political parties, the voting preferences and behaviors, 
ideology formationand change, and in the complexity of political culture. 


 
Research Topics:  content-based analysis of politicaldiscourse, 
computationalpolitics, political engineering, computational political science,  
social web mining, tag clouds, topicmaps, folksonomies, modeling of processes 
on networks, social networkemergence, dynamics of political attitudes, dynamics 
of political culture, speechrecognition, opinion mining, sentiment analysis, 
and semantic wikis.


Interdisciplinary research approaches are most welcome!
