Re: [liberationtech] Fundraiser to send 100 4G/LTE hotspots to Public Libraries in Puerto Rico & fund CryptoHarlem for 1 year
Hi Andres Thanks for your comments Forgive me - I should have been a bit more specific. We are raising money for *1 year of service* on 100 hotspots, and *1 year of funding* for CryptoHarlem. At the end of the year, we would need to undertake another fundraising effort to be able to continue the service, and the funding for CryptoHarlem for subsequent year(s). Unfortunately, as a very small non-profit, we don't have the capability to provide anything "forever". These things cost money which is why we are trying to raise funding to pay for them. You are quite right that it is not a permanent solution. I'm sorry if you don't think it's worthwhile because it doesn't last "forever". Please do let me know if you find some solution that will last forever. But keep in mind the old saying: don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. best, Nick -- Nicholas Merrill Executive Director The Calyx Institute 254 36th Street Brooklyn, NY 11232 Jabber: n...@calyxinstitute.org On 4/3/18 5:28 PM, Andrés Leopoldo Pacheco Sanfuentes wrote: > “*100 4G modems with unlimited data plans to public libraries in > Puerto Rico”* > * > * > *Are those those “unlimited data plans” also “FOREVER?” That’d be a > worthwhile donation.. otherwise, it’d be just like the “3-month Free” > or guateber gimmicks of the bloodsucking US Telcos...* > > Regards / Saludos / Grato > > Andrés Leopoldo Pacheco Sanfuentes > > On Apr 3, 2018, at 3:32 PM, Nicholas Merrill <li...@calyx.com > <mailto:li...@calyx.com>> wrote: > >> 100 4G modems with unlimited data plans to public libraries in Puerto >> Rico > > -- Liberationtech is public & archives are searchable on Google. [liberationtech] Fundraiser to send 100 4G/LTE hotspots to Public Libraries in Puerto Rico & fund CryptoHarlem for 1 year
Help us bridge the "Digital Divide" by supporting our campaign as part of DuckDuckGo's $500,000 Privacy Challenge <https://www.calyxinstitute.org/help/digital-divide> We at The Calyx Institute are super excited and very honored to have been chosen to be one of the contestants in DuckDuckGo's $500,000 Privacy Challenge fundraiser. Your help is essential to meeting this goal. The team that raises the most money gets $50,000 .. second place $40,000, all the way down to sixteenth place gets $3,000 .. and there are weekly bonus challenges for orgs to win another $247,000. Our fundraising campaign is all about the Digital Divide - our goal for this fundraiser is to raise $100,000 so we can send *100 4G modems with unlimited data plans to public libraries in Puerto Rico*, and to *fund CryptoHarlem for the next year*. If we can raise more than that number then we can send more modems to Puerto Rico! According to our research there are 66 public libraries in 43 cities and towns in Puerto Rico. Please help us to help underserved communities in Puerto Rico get online and to help CryptoHarlem continue its important work. The Calyx Institute recently became the sponsor of the monthly security clinic CryptoHarlem <https://www.calyxinstitute.org/projects/cryptoharlem>. CryptoHarlem is a Digital Surveillance Clinic that has been meeting on a monthly basis since 2013 in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. It is always open to the public and completely free of charge. [liberationtech] Call for free software projects ( and other types of organizations ) to sign an anti-patent-troll pledge
Hi, The Calyx Institute is running a campaign to try to get 40 organizations to sign a pledge against patent troll lawsuits directed against Linux, Android, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Tor Project and dozens of other free software projects and organizations What if your organization isn't one that develops software or holds software patents? That's OK ! We still would like your organization to sign the pledge. Even if you run a supermarket, a social network or a workers union, we are very happy with your organization becoming a member of the community supporting patent non-aggression. Open source is everywhere (from the cash register running on GNU/Linux, the server that hosts your website and mail or the medical equipment measuring your lung capacity). Everyone should be able to use these open source packages donated by their creators without thinking twice. By joining, you make a difference. The link to the pledge, and associated FAQ's is at the following URL: https://nlnet.nl/help/ It's really easy to do, it should take less than 5 minutes. Just click the URL, click on the 'Sign me up' button, then fill out your project or organization's information, and just be sure to do what it says in the confirmation email ( which comes from a totally different domain ) The subject of the email should be something like OIN license agreement for you from licensees...@openinventionnetwork.com Thanks! We also propose to modify XMPP clients to do TLS/SSL and OTR by default. [liberationtech] Connecting to XMPP servers over Tor hidden services
The Calyx Institute has been doing some work promoting adding Tor hidden service protocol to XMPP servers, to improve security, privacy and anonymity. Along those lines, I wanted to send a quick update: 1) There is now a list of XMPP servers that are reachable via Tor hidden services at this URL: https://xmpp.net/reports.php#onions 2) Also, XMPP.net's server scanner now works with servers that are reachable via .onion addresses Here is an example: https://xmpp.net/result.php?domain=jabber.calyxinstitute.orgtype=client Unfortunately it's still not that easy for average Internet users to connect to services ( other than websites ) over Tor, but we will be releasing some how-to documentation shortly. I'll report back when that's ready for peer review. best, Nick -- Nicholas Merrill Executive Director The Calyx Institute 287 Spring Street New York, NY 10013 -- Liberationtech is public archives are searchable on Google. I am running the code now - it technically works, in that it doesn't allow non-OTR messages through. But the problem at the moment is that if you try to send non-OTR messages, the error message is not popping up, at least in my testing, on any XMPP client I have tried. The server basically silently drops the unencrypted message without notifying the user. So for it to be really more useful that needs to be sorted out. [liberationtech] Google defies FBI, asks federal judge to challenge National Security Letter
I am very happy to report to the list that apparently, Google is now challenging a National Security Letter issued by the FBI According to what I have read, Google filed a petition to “set aside the legal process,” citing a provision that enables judges to modify or deny NSLs that are “unreasonable, oppressive, or otherwise unlawful.” That is a bit short of what I did ( with ACLU's and EFF's help ) in Doe v. Ashcroft ( 334 F. Supp. 2d 471 (S.D.N.Y. 2004) ) which was to challenge the constitutionality of the statute itself. However it's still something and it keeps the issue in the forefront of the news and helps to keep it a current issue. I have always hoped that more companies would challenge warrantless seizure of telecommunications records which has repeatedly been ruled to be unconstitutional and in violation of the 4th amendment, and I hope that more of these types of challenges are to come in the near future.
