Why don't you consider expanding your trip to the "real frontier" of
America at the moment?

That is, the US-Mexico border states. Communities there REALLY need
this type of technology to help them cope, among other things, with
the onslaught of militarization by the US, State, and sometimes even
Local government "law-enforcement" agencies.

[liberationtech] Community Wireless Across America

2013-06-12 Thread Yosem Companys
From: Preston Rhea

I need your help for a project that will bring me to 10 cities to
teach folks how to organize mesh networks. I'd like to contact the
brigade captains and organizers in these cities to build
relationships:

Bay Area > Reno > Salt Lake City > Denver > Omaha > Chicago >
Cleveland > Pittsburgh > Martinsburg > DC

My proposal, Community Wireless Across America
(http://crowdhitch.millennialtrain.co/campaign/detail/1330), is to
teach civic technologists in those 10 cities how to organize and
maintain wireless mesh networks. We'll share tools and methods for
participatory technology pedagogy, and the routers that we set up
together will remain with people in those cities to seed their own
mesh networks. With these seeds spread, organizers and technologists
can continue to grow locally-managed networks and spur innovation on a
shared platform accessible to any resident.

In order to do the project, I have to raise $9,000 by July 1. That’s
$900 per city - hoping that CfA participants will be interested in
coming out to learn and spread decentralized access to the Internet
and local platforms.

Here is more about the Millennial Trains Project

Cheers and looking forward to hearing from you,
