Oh, this has never been about what you should do. It is all about what
bibisectors should do, given we have a heterogeneous set of bibisect
repos with varying degrees of information provided in the commit messages.

(But, yeah, I guess it can't hurt to explicitly mention in the commit
message that it lists all source commits relative to the previous
bibisect repo commit.)

No, that does not solve the problem if all you know is the commit
message of a bibisect commit mentioning a single source commit. It
could be a bibisect commit from such a Mac or Windows bibisect repo that
corresponds to a single source commit, or it could be a bibsect commit

raal, please provide either the commit message of the (last good)
commit in the bibisect repo directly preceding this commit, or at
least the URL of the bibisect repo (so I can determine that preceding
commit myself). (Individual commits in bibisect repos often
correspond to a range of source commits, so it is always important to
know that full range.)

The FULL RANGE here is that single source commit:
c725ebaced006c02baeb9b0ee5ac6ac4625adc01
commit from the bibisect commit 193ccffc25300d5c26e6f30ab06a2315b6bff879

and I know it is a single because it is the only one listed.. if there
was more than one source commit between this bibisect commit and the
previous bibisect commit they would all be listed there, as the
example earlier showed.

the format of my bibisect commit message is:

short message: "source sha:" of the last source commit included
followed by a blank line
followed by the list of _all_ source sha included since the previous
bibisect commit (including the one on the short message line)

I guess Stephans point is that if somebody just throws a "source
sha:6586da0631ddcfd704538b0e1cf96d2ea0be7cd9" line about there is no way of
knowing what that means without doing research into what bibisect repo it was
from and how the bibisect log looks like.

Your "lets write all commit hashes in the bibisect commit" improvement is nice
for devs bisecting themselves and then continuing to fix the stuff. But once
there is a handoff between a bibisecter and a bug fixer, a source commit range
in the form

 "..

But it still doesn't help me that you would know it is a single. When I
do not know what repo the quoted commit message is from, and the quoted

the range of relevant source commits.

You do now: the format of the commit message (which I described in the
previous message)
_is_ the indication...
What else can I do, add to every commit message a line that say: "This
list all the source shas since the last bibisect commit.. for this
bibisect commit this list contain source commit" :-)

Bibisecting: Over 1000 bibisects served!

2015-10-16 Thread Robinson Tryon
Hi all,

A big thanks to everyone who's been helping us out with bibisection of
regressions, and a hearty congratulations to Terrence Enger for being
the lucky one to perform the 1000th one (and the 1001st one, too)!

Great news. Do we have any stats on the % of those that are now resolved?

Best,
Joel

Sure thing: 62% of the bugs currently bibisected are RESOLVED or CLOSED.

(CLOSED bugs make up less than 1% of the total -- we don't seem to
bother taking that last step with many of our bugs... ;-)
