[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 48800] New: FORMATTING: Impossibility of snapping to increments devalues the usefulness of the ruler

2012-04-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48800

 Bug #: 48800
Summary: FORMATTING: Impossibility of snapping to increments
devalues the usefulness of the ruler
Classification: Unclassified
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: LibO 3.5.2 Release
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
 Status Whiteboard: BSA
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Writer
AssignedTo: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
ReportedBy: stav...@gmail.com

Problem description:
The ruler as it's currently implemented in LibO is only useful for looking up
the current formatting, not for formatting as such. Moving the markers on the
ruler with the mouse is highly imprecise and does not allow to set precise
formatting (such as, e.g., 2cm exactly). While Styles may be used to work
around this problem (and that is encouraged, as far as I can tell), the ruler
is still much less useful than it might be and than it is in many other similar
office applications (e.g. AbiWord), which steepens the learning curve for
people migrating from other applications and complicates quick formatting of
individual sentences and paragraphs.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Type some sentences.
2. Try to format them by moving the ruler markers with your mouse. Try to get
the ruler to align exactly to 1.50 cm or 2.00 cm, not to 1.51 or 1.49 or 2.02.
3. Give up.

Current behavior:
The ruler markers are only useful for telling the current formatting. Using
them for some quick formatting, as in other applications, is nearly impossible.

Expected behavior:
Currently LibreOffice functions as it was originally designed, so it's not a
bug but a feature extension request. In many other office applications,
including AbiWord and Microsoft Office, it's possible to snap to ruler
increments and that makes the ruler useful for formatting. In LibreOffice, the
typical usage scenario is to use styles-oriented formatting and potentially to
hide the ruler altogether because it can't be used precisely anyway.

Platform (if different from the browser):
Windows Vista

Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0

Behavior is inconsistent compared to WRITER, but it's not a new problem, I
already observe that with OOo 3.1.1 and due to AOOo Bugzilla it was already in
OOo2 (For me it also does not work with OOo 1.1.4)

--- Comment #1 from Rainer Bielefeld

I can confirm the reported effect with parallel installation of Master "LOdev
3.6.0alpha0+ – WIN7 Home Premium (64bit) ENGLISH UI [Build ID:
4495824-6299bf6-ec8645]" (tinderbox: Win-x86@6-fast pull time 2012-04-08
00:03:52), but further research will have to be done to find out whether we
really have a bug here. As reporter correctly stated, "Promote" does not mean
"a little more to the left", but "use formatting of "current enumeration level
-1". What if there is some strange damage in the document what causes that
problem? I see the reported problem with all Versions (including OOo 3.1.1),
but not with a new document with enumeration created from the scratch.

My research shows that in fact there seem to be some problems with enumeration
formatting, for example if I simply create a text box with a single word and
click the 'Bullets on/off' icon, I sometimes get a bullet, sometimes i get the
selection dialog, sometimes nothing happens, and when I got the bullet,
'Demote' icon is greyed out. MAy be the sample document's problem is the result
of those other problems.

@Steve Kelem:
It would be great if you could do some more investigation with most simple
presentation documents.

I recommend to write down your result with a step by step instruction following
example in Bug 43431

If you find more problems please submit a separate bug for each problem and set
me to CC, we will collect the results with tracking "Bug 48799 - [Task]

I can reproduce this issue with LibO 3.5.2.2. For me this is clearly a bug,
since it runs contrary to people knowledgable about REs would expect. REs are
probably not the feature that everyone needs, but for me it's still an
important distinction of LibO versus MS Office... and as long as it is
available it should be implemented correctly.

Can't say much about the ampersand (&) issue, since I did not understand why
the Apache Bug given should be related. Plus: There is no ampersand in the
search or replace string, so most likely this is a different issue.

original file, resaved (damaged) file, screenshot of cond formula after and
before saving.

Problem description:
when RELOADED a good Excel file, cell reference in conditional receive sheet
reference, and formula get damaged (sheet reference is forbidden in excel
conditional format)
If saved with new added sheet reference, the file is no more correct for MS
Excel, and loose conditional formatting.
The xls file is still readable (and correctly interpreted) by LO

The "sheet reference adding", is not present it the file is and ODS format (it
happens to be addend only if XLS)

The sheet reference si added also if copying a sheet form an xls file, to a new
one.

Steps to reproduce:
create a such file:
1. create a file xls with conditional format
2. save it, and close the file
3. reopen the xls file an look at the conditional formatting formula (the sheet
reference has been added)
4. save the file and it no longer will be usable in Ms Excel.
5. open in Ms Excel, and the conditional format is gone

Notice:

in the FIRST file save, the file is correct, and Ms Excel reads it correctly.

WHEN REloaded once more and resaved, cell reference in conditional receive
sheet reference, and get damaged ( because sheet reference is forbidden in
excel conditional format).

Current behavior:
LO shouldn’t add any sheet reference in the conditional format formula.

Expected behavior:
The conditional format formula should not be changed

Nevertheless, my trunk build does generate a valid PDF from the attached file -
despite the "General error" on load. (However, I do not have a "Hybrid" option,
unless you mean the Embed ODT option - I get a valid PDF both with and without
it.)

I get a "General error" when I try to load the attached ODF in Writer. I wonder

On 3.5 branch with last commit 5e7f26787c6025ec1dffa9eee17405220325f7ae, idem.

It seems to confirm this would be a Windows only bug.

@info.kal...@valaiscom.ch, re your attached registrymodifications.xcu:

* From its length, it looks unlikely that it is only the result of strictly
following the steps in comment 3.

* Do you have an old ~/.libreoffice (or even ~/openoffice.org) and does it
contain any MIGRATED file (e.g., ~/.libreoffice/3/MIGRATED)?

* If I use that registrymodifications.xcu in a build of mine, the list of
recently used documents ("File - Recent Documents") is *not* empty. I cannot
reproduce your claimed problem that it is empty.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 48782] New: Allow easily creating a new document through command line

2012-04-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48782

 Bug #: 48782
Summary: Allow easily creating a new document through command
line
Classification: Unclassified
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: medium
 Component: Libreoffice
AssignedTo: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
ReportedBy: n...@math.technion.ac.il

The Unix tradition is that editors (e.g., "vi", "ed"), when given a
non-existent filename, warn you that this is a new file, but then let you edit
this new file, and when you next save, you save it with the name you gave in
the command line.

Unfortunately, LibreOffice doesn't follow this tradition. If I run "libreoffice
newfile.odt", or even "libreoffice --writer newfile.odt", All I get is an error
message. A word processing window is *not* opened. Instead I need to use
"libreoffice" or "libreoffice --writer" without a filename parameter, and then
go and "save as" with the intended filename.

Why is the current situation bad? Because it makes a very common task very
tedious for shell (command-line) users. A person (like me) who likes to work in
a shell, I typically "cd" to some directory, and then decides to edit a file in
it. But I can't "libreoffice newfile.odt", and if I do "libreoffice" without a
file name, and then intend to immediate "Save As" the empty document, I
discover that the default save directory *isn't* the directory I started in
(possibly because a new libreoffice window often belongs to an existing
process?), and it's tedious to use the menus to find this directory again.

So what I'd like is one of two solutions, with #1 prefered but #2 is probably
easier to implement:

Option #1: "libreoffice --writer newfile.odt" should open an empty document
(just like libreoffice --writer without the file name), but the next time I
"Save", it should save it in newfile.odt in the proper directory (the current
directory that the above command was run in).
If you think this breaks backward compatibility, I'd even settle for a new
option, e.g., "libreoffice --writer -c newfile.odt" (-c for "create").

Option #2: "libreoffice --writer" should open a new window and remember the
current directory, which will be used as the default directory to start in, for
the next file operation (such as "Save As").

I think that indeed is the best idea. We have the QA list, and even can ask

Would be my guess too. But a short discussion in the issue decided different..

> Bug 48081 -- 99% of custom animation is used on simple static text. This bug

Agree.

How do you know no one uses this ?

> Bug 45376 -- not a major problem for many and has a workaround, but cause this
> already has a patch,..

Will be fixed in 3.6 anyway. Maybe in 3.5.x too.

> Bug 45341 -- unused feature.

How do you know?
I agree it's not a MAB, since the use of native field cross-application is
limited anyway.

> Bug 45171 -- it's not even confirmed. If you want security, encrypt your
> partitions, or put it in an encrypted archive.

Not a MAB, where so many developers spend attention to this one?

> Bug 45085 -- not a big problem.

Formattig. Annoying people with existing document ...

> Bug 45084 -- rarely used feature.

Assigned, devs pay attention too it, and it actually blocks people opening
certain files in LibreOffice. Indeed Annoying

> Bug 45049 -- same

Ah well, a Wordprocessor with broken cross-references.. OK, it's Non-standard
caption number, but why would that have be added in the first place?

> Bug 44861 -- same

If a feature is used more or less, is not the sole scale to measure the
annoyancy, IMO ;-)

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 47951] Mailmerge creates duplicates

Hi Rn,

thanks for the report.
Some things I notice:

the number of 401 indeed shows up in the old mail merge dialoge (File > Print
 Yes )
It does not show when I choose Tools > Mail merge and then jump to step 8.

( The second method also is about 15 to 20 times faster by the way ;-) )

Nevertheles: indeed there are to much records shown. Was OK in 3.4.6.

Could you pls try to find out which rows are bupleicated, what exactly happens?
Maybe there are some line feeds instead of returns, or special characters that
make the listing go wrong?
thanks

The Problem https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44638 describes a
Problem with empty pages, when using duplex. My Problem is that I can't print
duplex because the function is missing.

The Problem in the bug is also regarding Ubuntu, my Problem occurs in OSX (ok

So I think the Problems are different.

With that additional info, I also change the Platform to my one. (x86-64 / Mac

According to your last email, I put this case to RESOLVED/WORKSFORME.
Don't hesitate to reopen if needed.

Just for information to QA or others, there were 3 data pilots with 65000 lines
each. Since only about 2000 lines were really used, I proposed to change data
range for the 3 data pilots.

Thank you for your feedback.

Created attachment 60072

The original odt-file for the testexample B.

I create a new file with LibreOffice V3.5.2.2 and try to make it much more
simpler for testing this bug and for better understanding.

This file works like this:
If you enter a lower "x" in the cell B1 the cell A1 change the font and colour
The same happens with the second line and B2 and A2.

If you save this file as "Mircosoft Excel 97/2000/XP/2003 (.xls)" and reopen
this xls-Excel-file the fontsetting of the cell A1 is always Arial, even if x
is set in B1 or not!

The problem seems to be the import of an xls file into libreoffice, exporting
the file and open it into Excel is ok.

odf -> xls = ok
xls -> odf = not ok

Can someone confirm this behavior?

on Fedora 64 bit in 3.3.4 dde link not updates automatically, in 3.5.2 not
creates automatically. But if create dde link in 3.3.4 and then open
spreadsheet in 3.5.2 then it updates automatically.

on Windows XP: in 3.4.3 opens correctly file with dde link, created on Linux
(content of cell was this: ='file:///home/s/Untitled 2.ods'#$Sheet1.A1 )
3.5.2 can not open this file correctly, because can not find file Untitled
2.ods (it is in the same folder)
So we see some regression or new feature in working with dde or link.

What about original problem, it reproducible in 3.3.4 and 3.5.2 on Fedora 64
bit and in 3.4.3 on Windows XP 32 bit

What is interesting, "Auto filter" adds this LIKE '' to search string, and
"Form based filters" not adds, so nothing can find.
Expected: function on button "Form based filters" should add LIKE '' around
search string automatically if not present, or understand search string without
it.

Reproduced also in 3.3.4 version on Fedora 64 bit
As demonstrated in step 6 , some digit thrown away. The same situation if we
copy-paste number from text and then press Tab.
If copy-paste part of another table, number retains as is.
So, for Writer in this case corresponding to selected number format is more
important than retain all typed digits. Expected that format will changed to
"Text" for prevent data loss.

If we enable option "Number format recognition" (mentioned in step 3) then
situation for number 12,3456789 is not better. It recognizes as "Number
Standard" and changes to 12,35. In comparison in Calc: number 12,3456789
recognized also as "Number Standard", but no loss of digit there.
So, "Number Standard" in Writer is wrong, forces data loss.
But it may be another bug or documented feature.

Changing version to 3.3.4 as most early reproducible

I can confirm the problem on a Gentoo with a 3 monitor configuration, using
open source ATI drivers and very clean monitor configuration done via xrandr
(clean == pure RandR protocol, no tricks, no proprietary hacks).

I am using libreoffice-3.5.2.2 compiled from sources on Gentoo.
