It is not as easy as that. We want the release packages to be runnable on as
wide spectrum of linux systems as possible. So the base line system must be the
least common denominator for various system libraries -> it must be relatively
old.

I also discovered the bug in my LibreOffice 4.2.6.2 installation on Windows 7
(64 bit). However another Windows 7 (64 bit) installation with 4.2.6.2 also
doesn't show the effect. The difference was this: The first was a new install
of some 4.2 release (then updating to the current release) while the other was
an update from an earlier version (< 4.2, I don't know the initially installed
version, maybe 3.2 or so). Is this issue really resolved, or are there just
work-arounds?

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 82547] New: Main drop down menu freezes libreoffice and whole system

2014-08-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82547

  Priority: medium
Bug ID: 82547
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
Summary: Main drop down menu freezes libreoffice and whole
system
  Severity: normal
Classification: Unclassified
OS: Linux (All)
  Reporter: lee.fi...@gmail.com
  Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
Status: NEW
   Version: 4.3.0.4 release
 Component: UI
   Product: LibreOffice

Yesterday worked round a system freeze problem on libreoffice

system: xubuntu 14.04 (all patches/updates applied) x64
graphics: amd (tried 2 different cards cards)
processor: core 2 duo (dell 745)
ram: 3gb

Cause: seems to be recent documents list.
Temp Resolution: clear the recent documents list (did via an extension)

Other Info: most of recent documents located on samba over a vpn, vpn was
active and responsive. (openvpn xubuntu stock)

Libreoffice versions tested: 4.2 (xubuntu repo) and 4.3 from the fresh ppa.

Description:

Open a libreoffice app (i tried calc and writer), do some typing on the doc or
in a cell, all seems fine.

As soon as you click a menu item be it Help, Tools, Edit or File etc, the
system locks / freezes for a long period of time (maybe a minute or more). You
cannot tab between applications, or move between apps using the mouse. Mouse
pointer does move around the screen.

I recreated with a terminal visible on half the screen and top running, load
goes high (2) but the cpu use is low, memory looks ok and io wait blips maybe
to 0.5 but not constant.

The system recovers after a period of time (say a minute, sometimes longer),
and the menu appears, but as soon as you click either a menu item (or one with
sub menu) or another main menu the process repeats.

My efforts to find a resolution included changing the graphics card and
upgrading from the stock 4.2 libreoffice supplied with xubuntu to 4.3 from the
ppa.

It was resolved using an addon/extension (name elludes me) which clears the
recent documents list. Performance then returned to normal.

The system has been working fine since it was installed in May 2014 and has
always stored its documents on samba over the vpn. It is used most days for
either calc or writer.

VPN performance was fine and tested.

Reproduced on my master 4.4.0 daily build.

In addition, along with other dialogs containing text, there is a huge amount
of blank space drawn with the text.

These are due to the UI conversions that are ongoing - who is managing that ?

Palenik/Caolan: could it be due to

BTW, I don't reproduce this on Linux (forget the wrong description, I had put
Debian in the bug assistant forgetting I was on Mac for this one)

Also, there's no error/warning message on console (I also build in debug mode
on MacOs) and it's a brand new profile since I regularly do:
"make clean && make postprocess.clean && ./g pull -r && make" to be sure
there's nothing wrong due to previous wrong things.

Julien, the extra space problem also applies to at least the Java classpath
archive dialog, the About dialog and others (haven't checked all of them).
Currently, the about dialog takes up roughly a third of the horizontal screen
estate on a 15" monitor - all of these seem related to some coordinate
definition problem of the rectangle on which the text message is drawn.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 55292] autocorrect does not correct two dashes to en-dash *when dashes are not discreet*

I initially found this somewhat disheartening but I now think it may lead us to
a better solution. There is going to have to be a compromise, as you indicate
but I think you did the right thing in closing bug 67364. IMO it is the same
issue.

> anyway I have an idea... why we don't stop "fighting" with this "---" corner
> case and start using a unique key combination for em-dash?
>
> my proposal would be to have:
>
> .*--.* for en-dash
> .*__.* for em-dash

I agree we need a different pattern, but use of low line (U+005F) is NOT a good
idea because this character is used extensively in basic text forms e.g.,
"Name: __". We do not want these converting to em-dashes. I have tested
this and I end up with the first pair of low lines being converted e.g.
"—_" in similar manner to the 3-hyphen problem. This is where the fun with
characters begins.

The main argument for "--" to en-dash and "---" to em-dash comes from TeX and
some wiki notation but there really is no consensus about this and I think
others need to understand this. Some publishers, universities, and wikis use
"--" for em-dash. A 2-character pattern is more restrictive. These would seem
to be a simple compromise:

--- for en-dash
=== for em-dash

... but they too have problems. The use of both a different character for each
and a 3-char AutoCorrect rule for consistency gives greater options in avoiding
conflicts with mathematical notation such as == or ++ etc (=== is however used
in JavaScript ... ). Unfortunately these both likely have a potential
to conflict with the AutoCorrect for types of horizontal rule:

https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Drawing_Lines_in_Text#Automatic_lines_in_Writer

Another compromise is to use mixed character combinations:

-_- for en-dash
-+- for em-dash

These avoid conflict with the AutoCorrect for types of horizontal rule, but
have no precedent in use case. I feel we may need to end up using HTML notation
as a compromise:

&ndash for en-dash
&mdash for em-dash

Not necessarily pretty or as easy (when typing) but the result after
autocorrection is the same and there is GOOD precedent for this type of
AutoCorrect rule. Like the low line (U+005F) example it also only requires two
rules for effective conversion in all use cases. It is also relatively easy to
remember.

Of course, 2 seconds after I hit Save Changes I see a problem with this use
case also. Editing HTML source code :-( If this is the case, then we are likely
back to the unique patten idea as a compromise. Sigh.

The Arabic ar-EG (and other) locale data defines
U+066B "٫" ARABIC DECIMAL SEPARATOR
as decimal separator, hence a digit sequence containing the '.' dot separator
is not converted to a numeric input but stays text.

Is the Arabic decimal separator actually used with Hindi (ASCII) digits?
If yes, why is '.' dot expected to work in an Arabic locale?
If not, what separator is used, ',' comma (I assume) or '.' dot?

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 81475] Meta: enhancing Writer's standard and formatting toolbars

2014-08-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon

IBM Symphony single toolbar line with standard and contextual toolbars

Hi Mirek,

(In reply to comment #12)
> Yes, but the font name drop-down is rarely used, which means it should
> either be removed from the toolbar and left to the sidebar or it should at
> least occupy less space (as a drop-down with an icon).

Well i guess that we'll have to disagree on how used the font name drop-down
is. You also have to take into consideration that styles arent highly used in
calc and impress, as there isnt a style drop down in the toolbar. Here are
responses about this issue from the ux mailing list.

Jean-Francois Nifenecker: Could you elaborate, please? When I see the people
around me (corporate environment, 400+ users) who don't use styles (most of
them, unfortunately), the font drop-down *is* used very often.

David: I really do get irritated with this argument about styles. Yes, they are
the right way and yes, we should use them all the time. But the real world
isn't
like that and a significant proportion, if not majority, of LO users just
don't get styles. Period. I use styles and have taught their use in offices
I've managed for many years. But for short 1 to 2 page documents it is
irrelevant whether users will be bothered about spending time styling their
documents. Please do not reduce the choice of users to use fonts and direct
formatting if they wish, and do not make it harder for them to do so.

> Spelling is an integral part of the Language menu under tools --
> spell-checking and grammar-checking are the only reasons to apply a language
> to parts of text. What I meant to say is that there's no need for a separate
> Spelling menu -- it would just duplicate the Language menu.

Well if you'd prefer to have 'Spelling and Grammar' and 'AutoSpellcheck'
underneath the Language submenu, then i'm fine with that, though i think it
maybe confusing for some users. The reason for suggesting the spelling menu was
that i didnt want to suggest cluttering up the main Tools menu with an
'AutoSpellcheck' entry, but maybe it would be worth it so users didnt have to
go digging through a submenu for it.

> The thing is, we don't need to save space. We should keep all the common
> options as accessible for users as possible and relegate all the lesser-used
> commands to the sidebar.

LibO has a plethora of useful features that can be brought forward to users, so
they dont have to go through menus, dialogs, and sidebars. And in order to
bring some of these features to the toolbar, space needs to be freed up.

> Button groups make things harder to access, and if the formatting toolbar is
> supposed to provide quick access to the most common commands, it should
> avoid them when possible.

Button groups do not make things harder to access, as we already have button
groups for open, new, paste, table, font color, highlight color, background
color, and all the shapes in the drawing toolbar. You could easily consider the
style, font name and font size a button group.

As an example, lets take my proposed 'Insert Internal Link' group button.
Instead of a user having to go into Insert > Footnote/Endnote and then the
dialog opens up and then them select 'Endnote' under type, they would click on
the down button in the group button and click the endnote entry. This is easier
access. This functionality isnt available in the sidebar as well.

> (Ideally, LibreOffice would be responsive and group buttons into drop-down
> menus when there is no room for them.)

It would be great if LibO was smart enough to do that, but as it isnt, we can
still help. :)

> A simple Find button is probably best, as it encompasses both search and
> navigation.

Presently there isnt a Find button available.

> The problem around panes being duplicated in the sidebar is still a hot
> topic now, but, generally, we should either promote one or the other, and
> since the sidebar has panes that aren't available individually, we should
> prefer the sidebar over the panes.

Yes i've seen the discussions around this issue and thought to comment on it,
but chose not to. Ultimately, i think users who use the sidebar would like the
panes in the sidebar, but users who dont, would prefer it the old way.

> Rather than buttons for individual panes, then, how about having a button
> for the sidebar?

I think it would be useful to have a sidebar/toolbar mode button that would
allow users to choose what they prefer to use. If they are in toolbar mode, it
works as it has always done. If they are in sidebar mode, only a single toolbar
line should be visible that primarily hosts the standard toolbar, and there
shouldnt be drawing, table, and find toolbars popping up at the bottom (similar
to how IBM Symphony had it).

> We have the same sidebar that Symphony had -- IBM donated the code to AOO

Yingxu Wang refer to "The Big-R Notation" in that paper. The definition is in
section "2.2.1 The Big-R Notation" (Definition 4) on PDF page 5.

A simple example use case is in section "4.1 The Big-R Notation of RTPA for
Modeling Iterative and Recursive System Architectures and Behaviors" (Example
1.) on PDF page 15.

It does not make sense to insert a notation in the Formula Editor. In the
Formula Editor, the category "Operators" is where I would expect to find this
functionality together with the sum operator.

  Reporter: birqu...@web.de

Status: UNCONFIRMED
   Version: 4.2.6.2 release
 Component: Writer
   Product: LibreOffice

Sorry for the confusion: Still existing the behaviour I wrote about yesterday
and thougt that solved in 4.2.6.2. Here again the description:

Now I could reproduct the crash mentioned an Bug 80806.
To reproduct:
1. add a textfield or open an template with one.
2. write a phone number into the field
3. select and copy the number (strg+c/ ctrl+c or via context menu) - which is
not so easy because of bug 80806
4. choose the printer from the menu - Brother PC-Fax v.2.2
5. paste the number in the field (strg+v/ crtl+v or via context menu
nothing is pasted. writer, quickstart and brother PC-Fax v2.2 chrash - windows
is collecting date and sends them (appeared once).
I discovered, that the same behavoir appears with any text copied from anywhere
in the document.

If I put in the number manually all works correct.

The first attempt after rebooting the computer works to copy + paste the phone
number. (Thath's why I posted the withdraw of the bug report yesterday.)
First I thougt, that the error came from KeyScrambler, because I had the same
behaviour with other Software. After updateing KeyScrambler only LO shows this
bug.

That's true, and it's also incredibly easy to implement.

However, I'm thinking the reason that it's not used is because the colors
aren't very pleasant to look at (at least the fully saturated colors can be
quite an eyesore). There's also a lack of light options. Those are just my
initial observations, though -- it'd be good to see some research on this.

Could you make an example document showcasing these colors? I'd be especially
curious about how well they work in charts.

Unfortunately unable to provide additional information as I do not currently
have Ubuntu Linux installed with which to compare. Also have migrated from
Windows XP to Windows 7. So no exact comparisons are now possible.

However, I have tried to replicate the problem on Windows 7 when using Calc and
the printout page length will vary depending on the screen display setting. The
page length seems to vary by as many as four lines which, of course, can mean
the difference between the print appearing on one page or another. Not so much
a difficulty where plain paper is in use but a significant problem where
pre-printed stationery, such as invoices, are in use. Tried it so far on the
100% 'Smaller' setting and the 125% 'Medium' setting.

I would suspect that it is different display settings that cause the problem.
PDF files seem to be stable. So the best work around might be to convert the
vulnerable files to pdf.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 82371] [UI] (I think). LibreOffice Writer keeps crashing while typing (it's possible when autosaving but I can't tell)

2014-08-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Hi Jay,

Yes, but I must admit that I included that message only because it was the
only error message I have received (usually, I work with named documents).
Essentially, the problem is that I'll be editing a document (with two or
three documents open at once), and Writer freezes, with the result that I
have to close it (getting a generic "LibreOffice Writer has stopped
working" message). I then lose whatever wasn't autosaved. This happens on a
daily basis (I am a writer), and it is incredibly frustrating.

Thanks,

Paul.

I could confirm the buggy behavior.
Open the document. You could chose "Enable Macros" or "Disable Macros"
(Macro-Security Medium): no difference.
Open the form.
Set the cursor in the tablecontrol (tablecontrol is in the subfrom - no fields
of the mainform were shown).
Go to the navigationbar, which shows the rows of the mainform.
Press an arrow to change the row.
LO crashes immediately.

Works in LO 330beta2, first appears in LO 330beta3 - so a regression.

Tested with OpenSUSE 12.3 64bit rpm Linux.

If you remove the connection to the macro in every column of the tablecontrol
it works in all other versions. But why should a connection to a macro create a
crash, when executing of macros is disabled? Don't know.

2014-08-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82561

  Priority: medium
Bug ID: 82561
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
   Summary: F9 all the things
  Severity: enhancement
Classification: Unclassified
OS: All
  Reporter: hudson...@live.com
  Hardware: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
   Version: unspecified
 Component: Spreadsheet
   Product: LibreOffice

This is an enhancement or new feature. Please provide a menu function that
takes the current sheet and replaces each calculated value with the value
itself. This would be like visiting every cell and pressing F9.

My use case is a situation where I have a seires of worksheets in a workbook
where each sheet depends on the previous sheet for one or more values. The
workbook has reached a point where I want to delete older sheets. I would use
this function to fix the values of the first sheet I am keeping before deleting
the older sheets.

Making this reversable would be really great if possible, but it would be
simple enough for me to copy the workbook before applying this. It should
probably warn if it is not undoable.

Hi, but doing so we will lose the image capabilities of the chart and its

Hi Sophi. Sorry for my ignorance, but what are _image capabilities_ and why
would they be lost? Are they the "preview" that one see and is stored inside
the .ODx file?

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 82530] Spell check

Hi, spell checking is depending on the language set on the Character style, so
if you change the language (by copy and paste of some text most of the time)
and if the spell checker of this language is not set in the style, it won't
work.
So to have a consistent behavior, set a character style or a paragraph style
(F11) with the defined language you want to use and stick to that paragraph
style. If you copy and paste text, use paste special (ctrl+shift+V) and paste
without formatting. Set as Worksforme, if you're problem is not solved, please
ask for more help on the users@ list or reset the issue on Unconfirmed. Sophie

Hi Francisco, when you click one time on the chart, you'll see green handles
around it, if you right click in this mode, you'll have several options to
manage the chart as an image, also another toolbar appears giving you graphical
options.
The double click enter the Edit mode (gray border instead of handles) and the
Chart options. HTH :) Sophie

Hi, you can add/change the colors used in LibreOffice by selecting a drawing
form and under the Color property add/modify colors or open other palettes. But
I agree it's not as easy as it would be with a color picker, it's just a
workaround. For me it's a duplicate of 42159, marking it so. Sophie

  Severity: normal
Classification: Unclassified
OS: Linux (All)
  Reporter: gaeremyn...@gmail.com
  Hardware: Other
Status: UNCONFIRMED

 Component: Printing and PDF export
   Product: LibreOffice

Created attachment 104565
  --> https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=104565&action=edit
Source docx file

I try to export a docx file that contains some windows only fonts via the
command-line. The command looks like:

soffice --headless --invisible --nologo --nolockcheck --convert-to pdf
"LandingPageMockUpDRAFTv1.docx" --outdir .

On OS X the fonts get properly replaced and the resulting PDF looks fine.
On Ubuntu however, the fonts do not properly get replaced.

This used to work fine on 3.6 but no longer on 4.0. The latest version on which
I confirmed it's not working is version 4.3.0.4 available from the
libreoffice-4-3 ppa.

I assume this is related to
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=feaebe7f93779d5c91c24c31ff91f756c69e9640
where some default font embedding got removed?

So... We use saved encoding if there is any. If there is not, we detect if the
file contains either UTF-16 or UTF-8 BOM (the majority of UTF-8 files does not
contain BOM, though). If that fails too, we use system encoding (which is
UTF-16 on Windows and UTF-8 everywhere else, I suppose.)

I think we could add another special case: set encoding to UTF-8 if system
encoding is UTF-16 (as that would have already been detected from the file
itself). (Of course adding real encoding detection would be even better, but
that is outside of the scope of this bug.)

Btw, this has not changed since 4.2 at all.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 82566] New: FORMATTING: Formatting resets when toolbar changes

2014-08-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82566

  Priority: medium
Bug ID: 82566
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
Summary: FORMATTING: Formatting resets when toolbar changes
  Severity: normal
Classification: Unclassified
OS: Windows (All)
  Reporter: thooke...@gmail.com
  Hardware: Other
Whiteboard: BSA
Status: UNCONFIRMED
   Version: 4.3.0.4 release
 Component: Writer
   Product: LibreOffice

Problem description:
When editing context changes the displayed toolbars, some formatting options
get reset to defaults.

Steps to reproduce:
0. You need a document with a mix of text and images.

1. Select some text. From the Text Formatting toolbar, open Highlighting color
picker, choose anything other than default Yellow. The color is applied and
selected color remains as the quick-click option.

2. Click on an image to select it. The Text Formatting toolbar should be
replaced by the Image toolbar.

3. You don't have to do anything to the image. Click back into some text. The
Text Formatting toolbar returns, but the Highlight quick-pick color is reset to
Yellow.

Current behavior:
Quick-click selections are reset when editing context changes & then changes
back. This applies to Highlighting, Background, and Font Color (that i've seen
so far).

Expected behavior:
Formatting selections that come from a picker and are retained for easier
repetition should persist until changed from the picker itself, not reset when
the editing context changes.

Problem description:
When selecting an image, if the previous selection was also an image, the
right-click context menu isn't right.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a document with multiple images in it

2. Set cursor in some text. Right-click an image, which will select it and
display the context menu. Note the "Save graphic" menu item.

3. Press Esc to close the menu but leave the image selected.

4. Right-click (or Click then Right-click) another image. The context menu is
different. "Save graphic" isn't there, as well as several other relevant items.

5. Click into some text. Repeat Steps 1 & 2 on the second image. This time the
