Every time I edit a docx file and insert cross-reference to tables in the
document, it crashes in the moment I try to save the file. If I do the same
steps, but save in odt format, it does not crash. 

Steps:
1- Open existing docx file.
2- Insert cross-reference.
3- Click the save button.
4- Confirm docx format.
5- Crash. Work may be lost.

I am using Libreoffice 5.1.2.2, OS: Ubuntu 16.04.

I was thinking about this request. Yes, I prefer to have such an option by
default in LibreOffice. I had already multiple requests in the #libreoffice
channel at freenode.

Just for a workaround: there are PDF printers who do that. Configure one
additional PDF printer and set it as default. The "print" the file. (see
https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Starting_the_Software_With_Parameters )

Maybe this helps you at least a bit.

I attached a tiny test sheet. Should mention that the same problem occurs when
trying to save in .xls, so formatting gets lost both in .xls and .xlsx

While one could provide extensions that tagged and generated material for LO
(as Zotero does for Bibliographies for example), why abandon what LO already
does to build something to parrot what LO already accomplishes. While this
might make some sense in the Google Doc environment (where Google termination
of the ability to add styles has resulted in apps that provide that service)
where Google apps is now specifically designed without internal extensibility,
it makes no sense where, as in the case of LO, the extensibility is already not
only built in, but the user is provided tools to extend and modify. 

LO already has the built-in ability to generate tables.  ToC is a subset of the
general ability that by default uses certain outline paragraph styles.
Unfortunately, the ToC also excludes the ability to include character styles
for someone reason I have yet to discover. If LO did allow the inclusion of
Character formats in ToCs,  it would resolve all formatting problems where a
Heading was part of the paragraph (as one sees in the APA style for headings.

So, a) we are not talking about providing 8000 paragraph formats; we are
talking about allowing the user to include as a ToC Heading a style other than
a paragraph style; b) it makes no sense to try to build extensions along the
line of zotero to do what LO already does; c) the solution I suggest would
allow the greatest flexibility for the user to accomplish his aims with the
least effort.

But by removing styles completely you will lose all formatting! Why not just
remove the duplicate attributes? You can even do that automatically with tools
like tidy. In addition - this only works if the problem is in styles section,
but what if there is some problem in the document contents? So this is a bad
idea in general, and I don't think that we should suggest such wrong things to
users.

Any reason not to simply use Zotero or Mendeley to handle this facet of
authoring documents best left to extensions?

With some 8,000 current styles defined in CSL [1] its a fools errand to try to
provide paragraph formatting for any individual "standard", be it CMOS, APA,
MLA, IEEE, etc.

Rather, it makes far more sense to validate the work being done on integrating
these extensions and ensure that LibreOffice responds correctly with style
formatting applied from the CSL.

LibreOffice 4.3.7.2."

I don't ask for utilities but only an proposition when the error message said
that because this message is only for this problem not for other corruption.
The error message is:
Read-Error.
Format error discovered in the file in sub-document content.xml at
2,78898(row,col).

The last line for row and column is different between a file and another, but
the error is always fix with the above solution, the only thing I propose is to
put the proposition to repair in the box message.

In order to change "Display of" options, there's a long way to go to Tools >
Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids.
There should be UNO command and a drop-down icon with all those options.

Don, please be specific when reporting a bug with the exact expected and
reproduced steps.

I guess you're referring to simple hidden text that's not shown in 5.0 although
it's on in Tools - Options - LibreOffice Writer - Formatting Aids.
Well, no explanation, but it works again in 5.1 so "stay tuned" :)

Confirmed with v3.3.4 under windows 7 x64.
Confirmed with v5.0.0.0a1 under ubuntu 16.04 x64.

On 3.3.4 it actually takes a couple of mins before the file gets loaded, with
the latest version it takes forever and a day.

Unable to complete build for x64 on windows due to failing unit tests:-

ole_dfltObjDflMethod
ole_ObjAssignNoDflt.vb
ole_ObjAssignToNothing.vb

(D:\lode\dev\x64\basic\qa\vba_tests)

Also copied ole_ObjAssignNoDflt.vb into basic module using downloaded x64
release 5.1.2.2, which also fails.

At the line "cn.Open conStr":-

BASIC runtime error.

Type: com.sun.star.uno.RuntimeException
Message: [automation bridge] unexpected exception in
IUnknownWrapper_Impl::invoke ! Message : 
[automation bridge]: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not
found and no default driver specified

Using the above ole_ObjAssignNoDflt.vb with win32 build of 5.2.0.0.alpha1,
compiled from source, does not show the problem.

Suspect this may be due to trying to use a win32 object from an x64
application.

I have 32 bit version of Microsoft Office 2010, on a 64 bit windows 8.1,
compiling with Visual Studio Community 2015.

Autogen.input flags:-
--enable-64-bit
--enable-pch
--disable-ccache
--with-visual-studio=2015
--disable-firebird-sdbc
--disable-cve-tests

Current workaround to allow me to complete an x64 build is to force the three
test modules listed above to return "OK".

There are numerous threads regarding this issue with respect to the various
code branches, but many are confusing or confused because of the language
employed. I had thought that a character style could be added to the ToC, but
on exploration in the current version, the styles available in the menu seem to
be limited to paragraph styles. 

In other words, if one creates a new Character Style, let's call it "APA
Heading 3", and makes that style bold, and then goes to Insert -> Index or
Table of Contents, and clicks on Additional Styles, one cannot add anything but
a Paragraph style. 

So the questions are, is there any functional reason why a character style
could not be added to the TOC so that this issue could be resolved, and if
there is no such reason, what would it take to accomplish same.

I have already found a reason: The items of class GtkSeparatorToolItem in
svx\uiconfig\ui\dockingfontwork.ui are count too. Therefore you have to
increase the numbers after the separator in SvxFontWorkDialog in
svx\source\dialog\fontwork.cxx.

For example

Table of Contents feature only indexes Paragraph styles, while indexing feature
can index selected terms.  As a result, one cannot effectively generate a ToC
with more than two headings in an APA styled document.

The APA Publication Manual (Section 3.03, Pg 62) mandates a Heading 3
style that that is bold and indented (1/2 an inch like a normal
paragraph), and then followed on the same line by the text.

That means one cannot use a paragraph style, as the paragraph needs to
actually be normal body text (Default in most cases).  If  one uses a
generated ToC, then text that is styled with a Heading style is
used in the ToC, so you don't want a paragraph that looks like normal
but for which you bold the first bit.

It would be handy if the ToC generator would provide the option to add
non-Paragraph styles to materials that are included in the generated ToC (it
does this for other Paragraph styles).  The only alternative solution is for
users to kludge their own custom index to use as a ToC in place of that
provided. In as much as a substantial portion of those who might have recourse
to use Writer will have reason to use APA or APA consistent style, it would
seem a no-brainer to add this functionality.

Version 5.1.1.2, writer wouldn't print black text, only the highlight color
(yellow). Also the names of the colors were a bit off...

Well we won't debate if it is in development, but Apache OpenOffice is
certainly still using the deprecated NSTextInput API that was deprecated at OS
X 10.6 That it works there is an Apple issue. Good luck.

This issue though was resolved fixed as working for a large number of folks on
OS X 10.11.1 (El Capitan).  No reports of support for OS X 10.9 (Mavericks),
and not clear if things were OK for OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) builds.

Sure we could have some new or unresolved issues with implementation of
NSTextInputClient done in June 2014--but more likely it is changes in OS X.

If folks that have had it working on OS X 10.11.(1+) start reporting it is now
broken that is a new bug and we really need full details.

Sorry to post as bug rather than submit change via gerrit, I haven't tried to
register yet until I get some confidence I can build x64 on Windows with
VSC2015.

Warning treated as Error by Visual Studio Community 2015, result of 32-bit
shift implicitly converted to 64 bits (was 64-bit shift intended?)

The result of 32-bit shift was implicitly converted to 64-bits, and the
compiler suspects that a 64-bit shift was intended. To resolve this warning,
either use 64-bit shift, or explicitly cast the shift result to 64-bit.

This prevents compiling x64 from source, but the same can be compiled OK for
x86.

Mac OS X Dictation doesn't work for me, either with the latest LibreOffice
Stable 5.0.6 or with LibreOffice Evolution 5.1.3 and the latest Mac OS X
version 10.11.4 (El Capitan). For what it's worth, my language is set to
french, but I tested both LibreOffice before and after applying the langage
pack, to no effect.

However, Dictation works like a charm with Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 (same
computer). I did not realize that OpenOffice was still in development : this
nasty bug made me reconsider using Apache OpenOffice and dumping LibreOffice.

Still some work to be done with the ww8 import filter. However, round trip
Writer -> .DOC -> Word 2007 -> new .DOC -> Writer retains heading styles, but

Sorry to hear you go Anthony, but most word processors have autocorrect enabled
by default, even MS Word. In more recent version of MS Word, they have made it
more easy for users to control its behaviour and access its options, as can be
seen in the video below.

Dont think the standard toolbar requires a button that would only be pressed
once for people who hate it and never pressed for people who like it. The best
option would be to review all the default settings in autocorrect so we have
the most optimal options enabled by default.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Writer or Calc.
2. Draw a shape.
3. Double click on that shape, and type some text inside.
4. Format->Character...
5. There should be "Highlighting" tab like in Impress/Draw.

This feature is supported in Writer/Calc too (can be set for now via sidebar
button, and this button can be also added to toolbar), so no reason why we
can't have this in the dialog.

sample with multiline headers from Word 2007 in MS binary

Verified that errant heading indents are gone in LibreOffice 5.1.2 for a new
Writer .odt document.

However, the attached sample MS Word binary .doc document on filter import to
Writer 5.1.2 is mishandled with the odd negative 1st line indent and increasing
base line as in refs [1][2]

Interesting if export from Word 2007 save-as ODF .odt document--that is opened
in Writer 5.1.2 without heading indents of the .doc format.

Also attaching a screen clip.

On closer inspection, turned out my document was somewhat corrupted. Multiple
footers of different styles on top of each other. Reproducing the document from
fresh solved the issue. Apologies for the inconvience.
