I have found that if Zoom is increased from 100% to 200% and above the border
outlines appear to display correctly (ie grid of small dotted lines) but
document then too large for screen

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 120729] New: User-Unfriendly Display of Tracked Modifications (if tracking modifications is on)

2018-10-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120729

Bug ID: 120729
Summary: User-Unfriendly Display of Tracked Modifications (if
tracking modifications is on)
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 5.1.6.2 release
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Writer
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: adalbert.hans...@gmx.de

This bug report pertains to LiberOffice Version: 5.1.6.2, Build-ID:
1:5.1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial4, CPU-Threads: 4; BS-Version: Linux 4.4; UI-Render:
Standard; Gebietsschema: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); Calc: group. The program runs
under Xubuntu 16.04.3 LTS with current linux kernel version 4.4.0-116-generic
x86_64

There is a function in LO Writer to track modifications of a document. In the
German version this function can be invoked by Bearbeiten>Änderungen
verfolgen>Änderungen aufzeichnen.

There is another function which controls, whether tracked modifications of the
document are displayed or not (in which case the final version is displayed and
all modification are just sored invisibly). In the German version this function
can be invoked by Bearbeiten>Änderungen verfolgen>Änderungen anzeigen and this
button works as a toggle-switch.

However, if this display mode not to show all deletions, insertions etc in
another color is not chosen, it happens to get switched off very often without
any user interaction through Bearbeiten>Änderungen verfolgen>Änderungen
anzeigen. For example, of you store the current document, LO Writer
automatically switches back to the display of modifications.

That’s quite clumsy and tedious, because the display of all modifications is
very distracting and one actually wants to show them only in very special
circumstances, to my experience.

The state of displaying modifications or not should not be changed except by
the user interaction through the named function or its equivalent tool buttons
or key combinations (if there are such bindings defined).

One more possible enhancement about recording modifications:
==
I would like to have four tool buttons (I hope I did not overlook them if they
exist, in this case some help to find them would be welcome): One to proceed to
the next modified place, one to go back to the last one and one to accept or
reject the current modification. The found modification should be highlighted
after clicking on one of the first two buttons.

The requested functionality is in principle present: In the German version
under Bearbeiten>Änderungen verfolgen>Änderungen verwalten (the English version
it might be called “manage modifications”). However you have to know where you
are. If the cursor is on some unaltered part of the document, the highlight is
on the next modification. So the current work point easily gets lost when
working with this method. If the current cursor is on a modified part of the
document, the proper modification record is highlighted, in this case it is ok
for me.

This function to manage modifications would be improved, if a fat e.g. red line
would be shown in the table of modifications between the one before and the one
after the position of the cursor in the document, if that happens to be on some
unaltered part.

"before" database to test

How to reproduce:
Open attached document "before". It is a database file with embedded HSQLDB. It
has one table and one report. Always when you ask to convert the DB, click on
"Later".
Open the report for editing.
Click in header area to make it active. It then has a white border on left
side.
Use menu Insert > Page Number...
Make the settings "Page N of M", "Bottom of Page", "Alignment right".
Click OK --> Crash.

After finished all crash error messages and notices start LibreOffice again and
open the document again. I got no recovery. After the file is opened click on
section "Table". Error: Connection could not be established. That means the
database is corrupt and all data is lost.

  Hardware: All
OS: Mac OS X (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED

Example of problem document

Unfortunately past few version of LO have been CPU hogs in normal usage
(typing), causing significant lag and detracting from the use experience (as if
typing via a remote desktop connection)

Have tried resetting the profile, no change.

I don't remember when this has changed - but it has been a issue for the past
few months (at least since 6.0 - I normally update regularly)

When I type in this document with a graphics object on the page,
the CPU usage is 50% on a 2.6GHz 8th Gen Core i7.

LO 6.1.2.1 on macOS 10.13.6
Open CL is not used. Auto spellcheck is off.

Expected behaviour:
CPU usage low (<10%)
"snappy" UX whilst typing

Actual behaviour:
CPU usage 50% of a 2.6GHz core
typing has (tens of ms?) lag

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 120726] New: Writer UI: Table protected cell message is breaking the workflow

2018-10-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120726

Bug ID: 120726
Summary: Writer UI: Table protected cell message is breaking
the workflow
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 5.4.6.2 release
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: medium
 Component: Writer
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: jean-francois.nifenec...@laposte.net

Description:
When table cells are protected, any attempt to enter data brings a warning
message which might disturb the user and break the workflow.

I think it would be useful to be able to configure Writer so that these warning
messages are not displayed.
A good place could be in the options dialog: LibreOffice Writer > Formatting
aids, add a checkbox in the "Protected zones" area, labelled like "Show warning
messages" (checked by default).

I think that both the "read-only" status in the status bar and the lock
toolbutton present in the Table toolbar are sufficient clues if the warning
message is not displayed.

Note: the option of deactivating the cursor in protected cells actually gets
rid of the said warning. This would be disturbing because in this situation the
user can't actually locate his actions/the insertion point within the document.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add a table
2. Select a cell
3. Menu Table > Protect cells

Actual Results:
Trying to enter data in that cell results in a warning message.

Expected Results:
Trying to enter data in that cell does just nothing visible.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Hi Kees,

I though I've seen this too.
Testing now, the Help opens in the browser, but it is the information locally
installed.

On Ubuntu 18.04 in LibreOffice Write I right-click and image and select "Edit
with external tool" which fires up Gimp. After editing the image in Gimp I
select File -> Overwrite [random].jpg which is supposed to replace the edited
image in Writer with the new version. However, in Writer the original image is
replaced with an empty box containing the message "Read Error". This behaviour
is consistent and reproducible.

Description:
"Normal preset contact" is the current contact.
"Magnify the preset contact" is a 0.3 cm red frame contact.

Note:
1, "normal preset contact", the contact is too small and not good.
2, "Magnify the preset contact", the contact is better, but the contact is
too large, the position is too close, and will overlap.
3. According to the use environment, switching between “normal preset
contact” and “magnifying preset contact” is the best way to improve working
speed.

--- Comment #4 from nicolas.hueppelshaeu...@web.de ---
After monitoring the problem and possible relation to user settings: I think
that's a red herring. I can't see any relation of the kind "with this
configuration/settings the problem is triggered, with another configuration it
is not". Changing settings/configuration might yield a temporary change in cpu
consumption. But essentially libreoffice burns up 100% of cpu time when this
document is opened.

=> Will change back the ticket summary to the original version.
