[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 153986] Use of "numbering" instead of "bullets"/"bulleting" for bulleted list

So, I did mark this bug as "trivial", since it's not that bad. But I've seen
people who get confused by it, and thus had trouble with instructions I gave
them on how to manipulate their bulleted list.

> Is it easy for the dialog to know whether it is editing
> ordered or unordered lists (so that it could show the appropriate label)?

I think so, because it shows, in the preview area, either bullets or numbers.

We have a "denylist" that should take care of deactivating Skia/Vulkan, if
there is a known bad graphics driver. How does it work for you in 7.5? If it
still allows Skia/Vulkan while showing the problem, you could share your
C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\4\cache\skia.log file (adjust path
per user name).

I don't understand why it would refer to such table elements, when you can't
change their position. I read the request as disabling the context menu entry
for all situations except when the table object itself is selected. Why would
you deprive me of the ability to open the Position and Size dialog freely?

Commit description:

tdf#154000 tdf#70423 sw: fix crash/freezing with huge text files

It was not possible to load or edit text files with very long
lines any more, because removed wrapping of the lines resulted
freezing and crash.

This reverts commit 745898eb2af2686ffbdfdc0e44984db67b172a59
"tdf#70423 Remove txtimport break in 10k chars line",
keeping only its unit test.

Fix also tdf#70423 by increasing the wrap limit from 1
to 25 characters, which still permit to load e.g. 50 MB
character or longer text lines, and to edit 5 MB or longer
text lines without crash or freezing.

Details: trying to load a relatively short 76 MB character
length text line shows a non-linear slowing down during the
load, resulting program crash after freezing 10 minutes.

Now this file is opened within seconds again, allowing to modify,
select and copy of the text before the full load of the document
(with linear speed). Loading a much shorter 5 MB character
length text line resulted an unusably slow editing previously:
waiting half minutes for changing, selecting or copying text
parts.

Manual test

Create a text file with a 76 MB character long line, and
open it:

$ seq 1000 | tr '\n' ' '  >numbers.txt
$ soffice numbers.txt

Note: the reverted commit had also a paragraph limit exceeded
error using unlimited paragraph length, because that is limited
in 4 GiB characters since version 4.3, see tdf#30668 and commit
ba27366f3d6bc6b209ecd5c5cb79a9ee5315316a "Resolves: #i17171#
Writer paragraph cannot be longer than 65534 characters".

> Have you ever seen such a UI?

Well, I see it for paragraphs: A two-state button group...

I'm being a little facetious of course, because table direction switching is
needed much more rarely and does merit "toolbar real-estate". But let's start
with having the functionality, e.g. as an UNO command which has a potential
menu item / items, and maybe an off-toolbar pair of buttons.

> Rather than some interface I'd want to use a
> shortcut, something like ctrl+c and +v that not only inserts the
> copied content but switches it. Would be hard to figure out, if not existent
> anywhere else.

I would not want to mix copying and switching, because what this would
effectively mean is that you have to copy-switch then delete, which is a
hassle, especially for large tables which fill an Impress slide etc.

But - if the functionality existed and was only accessible via some keyboard
shortcut - that would already be pretty good.

So, changing the title to focus on the functionality rather than the UI

It seems to be a FAQ
https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/writer-how-to-insert-bibliography-entry-showing-number/33081
where even the experts struggle with the answer.

Currently we insert shortname entry from the bibliography database entry, eg.
ARJ00. Alternatively one can switch to sequential numbers but very unfamiliar
at the bibliography (aka ToC) insertion dialog. And this dialog allows to
change the brackets. We need an extra dialog that allows ad-hoc and more
fine-grained definitions.

Nope. Not connected to heading/chapter/level etc.

But I can see the issue identified in the OP.

fwiw -- do not experience it as a troubling discrepancy.
It is easy enough to understand "numbering" metaphorically.
And focus on the key words "alignment" and "followed by".

Is it easy for the dialog to know whether it is editing
ordered or unordered lists (so that it could show the appropriate label)?
That would seem necessary to satisfy the OP request. Otherwise, would probably
need to find a generic label for "numbering" like "list identifier" or "List
ID" or "List Symbol" where this "cure" might be worse than the "illness".

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 154001] New: Checking for extension updates crashes LO

Bug ID: 154001
Summary: Checking for extension updates crashes LO
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 7.5.0.3 release
  Hardware: All
OS: Windows (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Writer
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: pincopall...@orange.fr

This seems a regression, because I found the same bug reported for a very old
version (bug No. 33701).

The problem is quite simple to describe: open Writer, from the Tools menu
choose Extension Manager and click on Cher for Updates. LO crashes. When I
restart it, a crash report is sent.

Version information is below

We've seen this on macOS and Linux, but not Windows (I just checked again on
Windows 10). See also confirmations in duplicate bug 153207.

Changing summary and metas to more appropriate ones.

Still reproducible with a recent master build:

I created an item in Zotero.
I added a citation in Writer, picked my item.

It pasted correctly and I had two footnotes.

This work has been done for bug 103223 with the list of initial patches
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/q/owner:kris.kr296%2540yahoo.in.

Don't remember the reason to not trust the Gallery anymore but could imagine it
was the customization. In-built Gallery categories are not located in the
user-space and neither adding nor deleting items is possible (there should be a
bug to make this happen). But the crucial point of the redesign was to have an
extendable list of presets.

In the forum thread you linked, it is said

"Your first error report is not appropriate for LibreOffice. The .docx format
does not support .odt ReferenceMarks, which Zotero uses to store citations.
There is nothing LibreOffice can or should do there. As for your second comment
there, you should always create separate reports for different bugs on
bugtrackers. Bugtrackers are only meant to track one issue at a time."

There is already a report for your second issue, so I will close as duplicate.

Hi there

Could you please try installing version 7.4 or 7.5? Version 7.3 won't see
further updates.

To make sure everything starts from a blank slate, please uninstall any
LibreOffice version you have and remove (or rename, if you want to keep it)
your user profile beforehand:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#Windows (so a new one is
created when you open LibreOffice)

But seeing that all your file are seen as corrupted, I'm wondering if it has
something to do with the hardware...
Do other program work fine and open the same files without complaining? Even
the ones LibreOffice didn't touch?

Some ideas: We could use underline to identify three variants: without, single,
double. Would be hard to understand, has no room for more differentiation and
clashes with the customization.

Splitting the Hyperlinks section of the Navigator sounds wrong. But what I
could imagine nice design-wise and effective is an icon next to the entry that
indicates what type it is.

What do you think, TAB?
