[Bug 161078] Allow direct formatting for page sequences instead of editing the style
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161078 --- Comment #3 from Eyal Rozenberg --- (In reply to Mike Kaganski from comment #2) > No. It is legitimate as long as there is no "page as a primary object" in > Writer (which is the case), unlike characters, paragraphs, and other primary > objects, that need *some* place, and by that, initiate *automatic* creation > of pages, which uses properties of respective paragraphs (primary objects). Yes, certainly. Note I kept saying "page (sequence)" to emphasize that it's not one page; and that I'm not suggesting making a single page a primary object. So does the bug title. But what is your opinion, Mike, on DF of page _sequences_? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

[Bug 131383] Sort comments in documents according the actual position (relevant for two and more text columns)
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131383 --- Comment #7 from Maria Kenneth --- The current approach of aligning comments based on text line numbers can be confusing when multiple columns are used. Treating all columns equally and ordering comments accordingly could improve the readability and clarity. Additionally, avoiding overlap of the horizontal dashed lines would enhance the user experience when reviewing documents with comments. [Bug 35538] Handling of fonts with more than 4 styles (R/B/I/BI) is suboptimal
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35538 --- Comment #91 from João Paulo --- (In reply to Eyal Rozenberg from comment #90) > > Actually, using styles is generally a good idea, not an ugly workaround - > but if one already uses styles, one should avoid emulating all kinds of DF, > and rather use styles with semantic meaning. :-) Oh, I didn't express myself correctly, it's not the use of styles that is ugly (I love using styles), but the workaround I could come with that is ugly because it multiplies the needed styles to keep the document visual style consistent, i.e., (In reply to Eyal Rozenberg from comment #90) > > Same as my last screenshot; perhaps it has indeed gotten worse; or the font > has a newer version? I think it is because of the new version (I noticed this bug got worse when I updated the font file). Even if the regression is on the font itself (the older version used to show all the variants inside a single typeface family -- maybe a compatibility tag was removed?), there are lots of other fonts that also show up on LibreOffice as different typeface families instead of a single grouped family: * Arial Nova is shown as Arial Nova, Arial Nova Light, Arial Nova Cond, Arial Nova Cond Light); * Bahnschrift (a single variable font file) is almost a nightmare: it is shown as Bahnschrift, Bahnschrift Condensed, Bahnschrift Light, Bahnschrift Light Condensed, Bahnschrift Light SemiCondensed, Bahnschrift SemiBold, Bahnschrift SemiBold Condensed, Bahnschrift SemiBold SemiConden, Bahnschrift SemiCondensed, Bahnschrift SemiLight, Bahnschrift SemiLight Condensed, Bahnschrift SemiLight SemiConde. The truncated names are a limitation of LibreOffice, as Windows 11's Control Panel and the Settings app (and I think Windows 10 also) shows the names completely; * Calibri is shown as Calibri and Calibri Light; * Candara is shown as Candara and Candara Light; * Cascadia Code is shown as Cascadia Code, Cascadia Code Extra Light, Cascadia Code Light, Cascadia Code SemiBold, Cascadia Code SemiLight; * Cascadia Mono has the same variants as Cascadia Code; * Corbel is shown as Corbel and Corbel Light; * and many other examples. Those typeface families (all provided by Microsoft, in Windows 10 and 11) are grouped correctly by the Control Panel and the Settings app, i.e., they are shown as a grouped font icon with the typeface family name (Bahnschrift, for example) and when that icon is opened then it shows all the typeface members of the family. Even the Merriweather Sans typeface family shows up nicely grouped together in Control Panel and the Settings app, so it's safe to assume that LibreOffice doesn't use the better API to handle fonts and typeface names with more than the classic R/B/I/BI variants. > Actually, using styles is generally a good idea, not an ugly workaround - > but if one already uses styles, one should avoid emulating all kinds of DF, > and rather use styles with semantic meaning. :-) The ugliness doesn't come from using styles, but from having to use extra styles that has "another" typeface set instead of just another style (bold, italic, bold italic, light, regular, etc.) on that typeface family, which makes it easy to make a mistake when changing typefaces on the base style. Instead of a single character style named Emphasis that just adds the bold style to the typeface, I have to use a secondary "Emphasis Merriweather Light to Bold", a secondary "Emphasis Cascadia Light to Bold", and so on, to avoid using fake emboldened fonts. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161078 --- Comment #2 from Mike Kaganski --- (In reply to Eyal Rozenberg from comment #0) > If you were to say "such a modification is no longer, in fact, the original > style; and should have its own style name" - that is a legitimate view, but > only if you also apply it to character, paragraph, list styles etc. No. It is legitimate as long as there is no "page as a primary object" in Writer (which is the case), unlike characters, paragraphs, and other primary objects, that need *some* place, and by that, initiate *automatic* creation of pages, which uses properties of respective paragraphs (primary objects). The *logic* (this is *not* an implementation detail, but the underlying idea, defining the implementation) makes it a feature, that there is no direct formatting of pages. https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148680 --- Comment #10 from QA Administrators --- Dear Lambert, To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today, LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed bugs which have not been touched for over a year. There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present. If you have time, please do the following: Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice. If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice. [Bug 161078] Allow direct formatting for page sequences instead of editing the style
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161078 V Stuart Foote changed: What|Removed |Added See Also||https://bugs.documentfounda ||tion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41 ||316 CC||mikekagan...@hotmail.com, ||rb.hensc...@t-online.de, ||vsfo...@libreoffice.org Keywords||needsUXEval --- Comment #1 from V Stuart Foote --- >From the Writer Guide (24.2) [1][2]: "Page styles control page properties (margins, page size, header and footer, among others). However, unlike paragraphs, characters, and frames, pages can not have directly applied properties. If you change the properties of a page, you are actually changing the underlying page style, so those changes are applied to all pages that use that page style. To change the properties of individual pages, you need to create a new page style. Headers and footers can be specified in one style to be different on left or right pages or first pages." So we directly format when we apply a page style other than what the current Page 'Organizer' tab "Next style", or a Paragraph 'Text Flow' tab "Breaks" defines. It is just a question of the how applied attributes of a page are grouped together and manipulated during document editing/layout and on export to ODF. In the UI, we can fully modify a page style from the Page Style... dialog or partially from the Page deck's content panels of the Sidebar. So we can manually force insert a page break onto a page with a different style. And that may be an existing page style, or have made a modification of an existing page style into a new page style that reflows the page--orientation, margin, layout, etc. attributes as found fully on the tabs of the Page style dialog. Noting the Sidebar Page deck omits some of the attributes. Absent Page style inheritance, bug 41316, each Page style requires its own style and only a defined "own style" [3] has meaning to be able to reuse from list box or the F11 Stylist in current document or as saved to template document. =-ref-= [1] https://documentation.libreoffice.org/en/english-documentation/ Writer Guide 24.2 [2] Byfield's Designing With LibreOffice treats page styles well. I also found that if I removed that tag from the xml and reconstructed the document that the problem went away. Definitely sounds like something in the parser is broken. Another sense in which a two-state "bold" vs "not bold" doesn't really make sense. > A (ugly) workaround is creating several styles to choose Actually, using styles is generally a good idea, not an ugly workaround - but if one already uses styles, one should avoid emulating all kinds of DF, and rather use styles with semantic meaning. :-) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

[Bug 160684] The Landscape style is nonsensical while we have neither hierarchical nor composable page styles
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160684 Eyal Rozenberg changed: What|Removed |Added Depends on||153534 --- Comment #13 from Eyal Rozenberg --- So, the point I was missing (despite using LO for years) is that there's never any page sequence DF. And if there's no DF, you have to have a different page style for portrait pages and for Landscape pages. So my last comment is literally wrong on that point. ... meaning that this bug is still relevant, although currently, one is forced to have at least two styles in order for some pages to be Portrait and others Landscape. But "Portrait" is no less of a poor choice of extra style. At any rate, the argument for removing this style would be strongly buttressed by a fix for bug 153534, so that we can actually apply DF to page sequences. [Bug 161078] New: Allow direct formatting for page sequences instead of editing the style
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161078 Bug ID: 161078 Summary: Allow direct formatting for page sequences instead of editing the style Product: LibreOffice Version: Inherited From OOo Hardware: All OS: All Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: medium Component: Writer Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org Reporter: eyalr...@gmx.com In Writer, we have styles which apply to characters, paragraphs, lists (or list items), and page sequences. But while we can apply direct formatting to the first four entities - we cannot apply DF to page sequences; at least, not using the UI. This is: 1. Inconsistent. 2. May still be somewhat confusing. 3. Not a good idea unless we change the paradigm of use of styles in LO. The inconsistency needs no demonstration, the introduction above makes it clear. As for confusing users - naturally, inconsistencies in entities' behavior or in the way one interacts with them is confusing. The matter was discussed at length in bug 126608; or at least, some user confusion was discussed at length, and the conclusion was to clarify this somewhat by changing the "Format | Page..." menu item into "Format | Page Style..." . This helps somewhat, i.e. it makes some users realize that the dialog will not apply DF to the current page sequence. But - other users will fail to realize this - because they expect consistency, and they know that on the Format... menu, one applies DF, not edit styles; and obviously there must be a way to DF a page sequence, so - it must be that "Page Style..." is just weirdly named, and actually does DF. The third point is illustrated by some of the examples brought in the discussion in bug 126608. But let me put it this way: Suppose we have a paragraph style with double spacing and a box around the paragraph. Is it legitimate to have a paragraphs of this style, but in which the spacing is 1.5 for some reason? In LibreOffice, the answer is "yes" - we allow it. We do not force this to be a different (named) style. Well, then - why should the same not be true for page (sequence) styles? Why can a document not have sequences of that style with some modification of one of its aspects? If you were to say "such a modification is no longer, in fact, the original style; and should have its own style name" - that is a legitimate view, but only if you also apply it to character, paragraph, list styles etc. - and we don't. The fact that there are typically more variations of DF for characters or paragraphs does not mean these should not exist for pages. So, unless we change the paradigm to _only_ have named styles - we should support page (sequence) DF. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
[Bug 161075] Rename "Page Style..." to "Page..." on the Format menu
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161075 --- Comment #5 from V Stuart Foote --- -1 This would be a reversal of what was done for see also bug 126008 [1] where we renamed the Format -> "Page..." to Format -> "Page Style..." for adjusting the style of page holding current paragraph--also repositioned it on the menu removing it from the other DF dialogs. IMHO no reason to revert, or UX confusion of bug 126008 returns. [Bug 161035] Spinning wheel hang on MacOS when using the Zotero plugin.
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161035 --- Comment #13 from Patrick Luby (volunteer) --- OK. I found what is triggering this bug: it is the following XML snippet in test030.odt's content.xml: If I select the View > Navigator menu item and delete this bookmark, no crash in my local master build and no hang in LibreOffice 24.2.3. So Writer definitely gets stuck in an apparently infinite loop. The only difference in my local master build is that, instead of looping, I enabled debug code and so it crashes when it hits the following assertion: Assertion failed: (!"Some bookmarks were not consumed earlier"), function lcl_ExportBookmark, file unoportenum.cxx, line 611. I am not familiar with the code, so I will need to step through the code and see if I can find where the above bookmark derails the exit from the loop. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
