Are you asking me to open a new bug or is this sufficient?

Please do file bug reports about the help content (component is
“Documentation”) or submit patches via Gerrit to the help repository. This repo
is the source for help.libreoffice.org, so any change eventually goes to that
site.

I agree, the instructions are very confusing.
Selecting and Applying are mixed-up.

You are not alone.
Sometimes I read stuff five times and still don't know what it means.

Hint: I have found that the online Help and the integrated Help are often
different.
And one or the other has a better explanation.

OK. Going mark this Resolved.

Thanks for the quick reply. Turns out I was applying "paragraph" styles when I
should have been applying character styles.

The only bug is in the help manual.

It currently reads:

How to apply a style:

1.) Select the text. To apply a Character Style to one word, click the word. To
apply a Paragraph Style, click the paragraph.
2.) Double-click the style in the Styles and Formatting window.

This is inadequate. For clarity this should read:

How to apply a style:

Character Style:

1.) Select the text, word or letter.

2.) Choose "Character Style" (the symbol 'A' (Text Symbol) in the Styles and
Formatting side pane or window and double click the selected style from the
list in the Styles and Formatting pane or window.

Paragraph Style:

1.) Select or place the cursor in the paragraph.

2.) Click the Paragraph Symbol in the Styles and Formatting side pane and
double click the selected style from the list in the Styles and Formatting pane
or window.

Please attach a document which displays this behavior.

I just tested on 5.3.1.2 and it seemed to work fine.
- new document (Crtl+N)
- pasted your example paragraph from above
- highlighted first "(1)" clicked Superscript button, looks OK
- created a custom Character style called Superscript
- style settings: checked Position Superscript, 9pt, based on nothing
- selected another "(1)" clicked on Superscript character style
- looks OK

No unexpected paragraph formatting appeared.
Cannot confirm.

So ... Please attach a document which displays this behavior.
