I can't confirm it with

Version: 7.2.4.1 (x64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 27d75539669ac387bb498e35313b970b7fe9c4f9
CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19044; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: de-DE (de_DE); UI: en-GB
Calc: CL

But I'm not sure, if I followed your steps in the correct way, because I think
you might mix direct formatting and character styles.

Steps I've tried
1. Open new document and type some words.
2. Select some of the words and apply a character style with a different font,
than the rest of the document (style inspector shows, that there is no
character direct formatting)
3. Overwrite selected text => New text has same character style (with different
font) (still no character direct formatting)
4. Change font with Direct Formatting => Possible

=> Please specify your problem and your steps to reproduce.
