First file is a Microsoft Word file with former native format "doc". ("former"
because the recent one is "docx").
Second file is Apple Works/Claris Works extension (see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleWorks).
Do you still reproduce this after the renaming?
BTW, what's your precise version of macOS ?
Also, just in case, could you rename your LO directory profile? (see
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Corrupted_user_profile) and
give a new try?

I have used LibreOffice for the last 5 years (at least!) to open this kind of file to view the contents. For example most of these files are from my father's old computer and he used ClarisWorks for almost everything; so I used LibreOffice to read them.
