One of my formulas crashed libreoffice after trying to copy and paste it
several times; this caused all of the formulas above it to change, including
the one i was tying to copy, after recovering the document. The ones bellow it
did not change.

On pc Debian x86-64 with master sources updated today, I retrieved this file.
On page 22, I noticed "Object 326".
I unzipped the odt file and noticed there was indeed no "Object 326" file or
directory whereas there are (for example for "Object 300"):
- Object 300/
- ObjectReplacements/Object 300

It could really help to have a minimum step by step process to reproduce this.
I mean
- attach an original file with no problem (not too big, ideally as small as
possible)
- provide some actions (the minimum) to do on the file to corrupt the file.

Of course, it should be done with 6.3.4 or some prerelease/dev version (6.3.5,
6.4.0, ...).

I haven't a clue what all these words and letters mean.  All I know is that
when I last downloaded a LibreOffice update, a couple of years ago, nothing has
been the same.  Lately, when I try to open a document, the hour glass appears
for about 5 seconds, then disappears and nothing opens.  I try again and again
and still nothing opens.  In the end I shut down my computer completely and
then when I restart it, things work fine for a while.  Then the whole cycle
starts again.  What's that called, I don't know.

Same problem here today. I opened a docx document with LibreOffice 6.0.7.3 on
Kubuntu 18.04.2. At first, formulae were displayed. I modified some of them and
some text. I could save it and export it once into pdf, correctly. Then I
continued to work on the document, created a new formula and modified the style
of formulae (don't know why such a big default space around formulae). I tried
to export it again into pdf and had a general error. Back to the odt document,
all formulae of the docx were changed into "Object ###".

I then tested this: I open the docx (original document), save it as odt, create
only one new formula, change formula style (left and right spaces), save again
the odt. When I open the odt again, no "objects" but many formulae are not
correctly displayed, some of them are replaced by an inverted question mark,
and some are permuted (more precisely, boxes are not permuted (they keep their
size) but their content is permuted: the content of one box appears in another
one, distorted by the inadequate size of the box).

P.s. Yesterday, on another O.S. (Windows 10), I noticed the same behaviour
described on last post by Fluepapir: LibreOffice trying continuously (every
five seconds or so) to save the file, hindering any work on it.

I encountered the problem today in LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 on Kubuntu 16.04, and it
is not the first time lately.

The file was an older DOCX-file with many formulas that I saved as ODT. Now
most, but not all, formulas are replaced by an "object placeholder". This
applies both to formulas that are from the old DOCX-file and to formulas I have
written myself in LO.

I noticed one strange behaviour that is probably connected to this issue: I
tried to save and LO seemed to continuously save the file over and over and the
only way to stop it was to kill the process. Afterwards, I found thousands of
copies of the file in the backup directory, all of them containing the error.

I've just Got the same problem

this had happens many times. Always by importing a word doc, with many
formulas.
The, working with the document, correcting some formulas, and then almost all
formulas disappears.
I've never been able to find a way to reproduce the bug

@Lennart: Thanks for having a look into it. This is probably the worst software
bug I ever ran into. It really prevents me from learning. So I appreciate every
effort fixing it.

I discovered an interesting behavior of the corrupted files. If you try to copy
some formulas and paste them to another place, you don't paste the formulas you
initially copied. I screencaptured this and uploaded it.

The bug is still present with LibreOffice 5.0.3.2 on OS X 10.11.

Again I created a document with many formulae, worked on it, saved it, closed
it, reopened it and for no apparent reason formulae got:

1.out of place and warped to fit into their new place
2.replaced by "Object X"

Again I sadly have no uncrippled version of the document at hand. I attached
documents from 11/9/15 and 12/9/15 that represent different degrees of
corruption.

Please tell me, when I can provide any more information.

 Linux Mint 16 / Mate. x86

It seems to be randomized but occurs (with many formulas ? with frequent
changes in formulas ?)

It can be that this bug no longer exists. I had a test-file I couldn't
disclose, which shows broken objects on a file that was readable in openoffice,
but the bug in it is gone at LibreOffice 4.1.(where the file is readable)

Hi, I confirm this bug on a x86 : sometimes, while editing a document, some
formulas disapear and are replaced by Object x. In the odt file seen as a
zip, the formulas have disapeared too. 

Sometimes, it seems to occur just after a copy-cut between formulas became
inoperant (a memory issue ?). 

I remember this bug used to exist in old OpenOffice.org versions and has been
solved for a long time (but I have no reference any more, sorry). Someone
talked about a solution to limit the problem (on OOo), with modifying graphic
cache memory option, for example on OOo :

(In french, sorry. With 4MB RAM, it seems possible to switch this cache to
128Mo. I will try. If it seems usefull, I will tell it...)

I work on Mint (Ubuntu 13.04 familly) / Mate desktop, LO4.0.2.2 400m0 build 2
from distribution repository (and not LO website). I had the same issue on
Ubuntu 12.10 / classic Gnome (session-fallback). 4MB RAM. 
I use Dmaths add-on (www.dmaths.org)

months yet and don't know word perfect)
If so, I would need a WordPerfect file from which one of the defective files
was created, since I have the assumption that the files were corrupted already
when they were imported, so the best way to track the problem Is to watch the
Import INTOLibreOffice!

(And I have to find out why that formula Import doesn't work at all now)

The WP that was imported is attached. The pdf of the  document is also attached
for you to see the kind of mathematical formulae in the document. What I did
was to use old printed document (as seen in the pdf to insert the mathematical
formulae after I had imported the WP document into a much older version of
LibreOffice. Then I saved it. I was prompted to update to a newer version (not
the current Version 3.6.4.3 (Build ID: 2ef5aff) that I am using now) of
LibreOffice which I did. Then the formulae were collapsed.

However, I tried much to fiddle with this stuff the past weeks and it doesn't
want to break more than it was already.

Thanks for your efforts. I had to re-write the formulae when I had the trouble.
So I cannot show you the problems now. But I have also upgraded to the Version
3.6.4.3 (Build ID: 2ef5aff) of the LibreOffice, which did not import the
formulae from the WP documents (It would have been good to have that option as
well). 

I am using  MacBook Pro with  OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)  and   2.2 GHz Intel
Core 2 Duo processor.

But note, it seems that the data is lost due to that error!

As I see you (mena...@gmx.de) still have the old file, so would you please give
it us, too, so we can trace what the program thinks when it forgets the
objects?

This entire mess may be because the internal file manager might not sustain so
many internal files, because any formula creates a folder in the zip file.
And, unlike other graphics, it creates it directly in the stem directory!

ODT-Document with formulae replaced by the bug.

I have a similar problem with a document created solely in LibreOffice.
Randomly all my formulae got eaten for the third time. I attached the document
with the formulae replaced by Object X.

Thank you very much for your bug report!

I am very sorry for LibreOffice causing such anger to you! However, I do not
know how to solve this issue (I am just a simple bugwrangler, sorry). Therefore
I reset just some flags/fields for this bug report -- this should make it
easier for the experts to find this report and to handle it.

Could you inform what is the the Operating system, the file type, native odt or
other type and your LibreOffice version.

And if was possible upload the file or at least a page where someone can see
the issue.
