The bottom line is that LO is not very convenient for writing mathematics. The same as for example a diagram, or a part of a spreadsheet in a text document. An object has to be activated before it is possible to work in it. I doubt very much if that behaviour of double clicking can be changed. So if this issue is not te be closed as 'won't fix' then it would be an enhancement. (What maybe helps a bit: if one object is selected, the context menu has the item 'Edit'. Done with editing > Escape, and then Tab goes to the next formula.)
