Check for updates no problem. When visiting Preferences LibreOffice Extended I see use Java-Runtime environment ticket but no java shows (as iirc no java is installed on this machine). So WORKSFORME. LibreOffice just hang. Doing the step outlined by Carlo solved the problem.
