[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 78326] Can't delete a table in Impress/Draw if cells are selected
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78326 --- Comment #33 from fre...@wp.pl --- Two proposals: 1) Click on the edge always Selects table (Which can be then deleted) If one wants to select all cells, there would be two options: a) Drag the mouse over cells to be selected b) Place cursor in table cell and press Ctrl+A ("Select all" command) In both cases (a,b) the cells would be selected and pressing Del would delete cells's contents but keep Table in place. 2) First click would select table cells (as it is now) and delete would remove contents only (keep table), but once empty Table is selected again, "Del" would delete the table (so Del on table with all cells selected would delete cell's content; while the same operation but with cells already empty would delete table). I would prefer "1" as seems more intuitive to me (I expect "Del" to delete whole object surrounded by Edit frame). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.___ Libreoffice-bugs mailing list Libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org https://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-bugs

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78326 --- Comment #31 from Stepas Toliautas --- (In reply to Eyal Rozenberg from comment #30) > It is empirically true. That is, when a user clicks the frame of a table, or > another object, they expect an operation on the entire object. At least, > many, and I'd say almost all, users expect this. All of the statements in your comment are correct (IMHO), but you seem to be replying to a different argument, since the wording was "The user expects operation on the whole object (cut or delete) without dependency to any selection state". While you rightfully point out that there are (at least) two different selection states. Also, fix for Writer tables does not follow the cut/ delete consistency, which I'm actually not happy about: there should be a difference between table selection and all all-cell selection, and cut/ delete should be symmetric within these selection modes. Going back to Impress, there are two current bugs that make practical use difficult regardless of UI choices: a) it's hard to select Impress table as object (since single-click from outside selects all cells as well) and b) during clicking-and-dragging of cells from within, any contact with table frame -- as well as simply selecting all cells -- automatically selects the frame as well. In effect, many new users only ever see "everything selected" mode, which does not even behave as expected. So, I guess... let's fix Impress table selection first? That is, when a user clicks the frame of a table, or another object, they expect an operation on the entire object. At least, many, and I'd say almost all, users expect this. > otherwise one of the following would be > impossible: a) selecting and cutting/ deleting content of all cells at once, A user expects that clicking-down in some corner cell, then dragging along the diagonal, would eventually select all cells; and a minor expectation is that, at that point, a Delete keypress would clear cenn contents, not the entire table. In other words - users expect a single-click on the frame to do something different than selecting all cells. > or b) selecting and cutting/ deleting the table itself. Well, that cannot be true, otherwise one of the following would be impossible: a) selecting and cutting/ deleting content of all cells at once, or b) selecting and cutting/ deleting the table itself. So there has to be a difference between table and content selection states. As a matter of fact, Writer tables are about to adopt (in 6.4) the fix provided in tdf#118311 (Ctrl-X cuts table object, while Ctrl-C + Del simulates cutting table content). Currently, if all cells are selected, > single-click on the edge does nothing, and double-click unselects/ removes > focus from the table. I'm leaning towards b) or some similar operation myself because Del and Ctrl-X doing the same thing (deleting selected data) is common and consistent usage in today's application UI. It's just that selecting the table instead of its contents is difficult here. IIRC, tables in Writer are cleared if their content is selected, but can be deleted either by right-clicking -> Delete Table or by selecting them as text element (that is, putting cursor in a line before table, holding Shift and pressing right or down arrow until the table and its surroundings are selected) and then pressing Del. In Impress, there are no "surroundings", so no second choice. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.___ Libreoffice-bugs mailing list Libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org https://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-bugs

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present. If you have time, please do the following: Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice. If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice. Please DO NOT Update the version field Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker) Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular meaning that is not appropriate in this case) If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a REGRESSION. To do so: 1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/ 2. Test your bug 3. Leave a comment with your results. 4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo'; 4b. This bug is already there in v3.3.0 / Ubuntu 16.04. What changed between 4.0.0.3 and 4.1.0.4 is that table cells are selected after the table is inserted. I'm not sure that change is intended or if that should be treated as a regression as well, I'm adding the details as information below (if it's a bug, open a new bug report on it): 02bb77b2f877fc23b622a3d1c239d697512fb811 is the first bad commit commit 02bb77b2f877fc23b622a3d1c239d697512fb811 Author: Matthew Francis Date: Fri Sep 18 10:29:02 2015 +0800 source-hash-a00b62422e5499e842d0b3b6302ba79f3d808c27 commit a00b62422e5499e842d0b3b6302ba79f3d808c27 Author: Gokul AuthorDate: Sat Feb 2 15:29:56 2013 +0300 Commit: Ahmad Harthi CommitDate: Sat Feb 9 11:28:05 2013 + Fixes fdo#46186, The Table Remains in the defined writing mode. The table in impress is drawn under the rectangular are, on Selecting the table it was only selecting the rectangular area and not the cells inside, Making the layout to be as RTL which was mirroring the table. But, We need the table to be in RTL Writing mode and not mirroring the table. Now on applying my patch, If table is selected, it will select the entire cells inside which is the actual table and the functionality works fine.
