Could you try to upgrade to 4.2.4.2 wich is due in the next days, see here to download it: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ click on 4.2.4, it's not checked but available. Also toggled design mode off and on both in Writer and in Base to no effect.
