Problem still persists for LibreOffice 5.3.0.3 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial
Xerus, running under Unity.  However, the theme is not the default as when I
originally reported this bug report, but it is 'Arc' now,  Looks like the
problem is not theme related.

Details of the build:

Build ID: 1:5.3.0~rc3-0ubuntu1~xenial1.1
CPU Threads: 8; OS Version: Linux 4.4; UI Render: default; VCL: gtk2; Layout
Engine: new; 
Locale: en-CA (en_CA.UTF-8); Calc: group

For me in 4.4.1.2 on Ubuntu, the lines are vague as shown in the first
attachments
(it even does not has the proper selection..)

The selection borders look nice and thick to me (Ubuntu 14.04, lxde), and have
done going back to at least LibreOffice 4.0. I don't see anything like what
happens in the attached image.

Could you describe what distribution/desktop you're using and if there's
anything special about how it's set up? Thanks

Yeah, plain old Ubuntu displays the selection very clearly.
This certainly looks distro/DE specific.
If you reveal your setup, I can install it on a VM and test.
