Based on the last comments, I believe it was a problem with Ubuntu. Closing.

Any update with a recent LO version (last stable one is 5.3.5 and 5.4.0 has
been released)?

Buovjaga: I wonder too if it's LO bug or Ubuntu LO packaging bug, what do you
think?

Hi Frédéric,

I've done what you suggested and it seems to have resolved the issue with the
recovery wizard.

I'll keep testing and report back if I can still cause the issue in any other
way.

Many thanks for your assistance.

I encountered the same bug with LibreOffice 5.1.4.2 and Ubuntu 16.04 (upgraded
from 14.04).
I found a solution : sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

Seems linked to a problem I encountered when upgrading to 16.04 :
http://askubuntu.com/questions/760825/cannot-boot-system-due-to-start-job-running-for-hold

I hope it helps !
Regards.

Hi Buovjaga,

My laptop uses switchable graphics (AMD Radeon R7 M260 with Enduro Technology).

Essentially it uses the Intel graphics (HD 4400 to be precise) unless it needs
to use the AMD graphics for gaming etc.

I suspect it's predominantly the Intel graphics in use when I use LibreOffice.

I am also experiencing this problem, following a recent upgrade to Ubuntu
16.04. The recovery wizard opens, but the window is slow to respond to user
input, and most of the window is solid black (some kind of rendering problem).
After clicking any button, the session crashes and dumps me out to the login
screen soon after.

I have tried trashing my user profile. Writer then starts up normally, as the
recovery wizard does not run. A similar crash can be made to occur if I then
attempt to insert a special character, however. The special character window is
slow to open and respond, is partially black, and then crashes me out to the
login screen again after a few seconds.

The output of dmesg looks suspicious:

I'm not seeing the problems you describe. I think there is something wrong in
your system.

This is worth a try:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#Resolving_corruption_in_the_user_profile

It could be some deeper problem, though..

Hi there, I discovered last night that the issue is more widespread. When one
attempts to sort a table column in writer the same thing occurs.
