Re: [Libreoffice-qa] Libreoffice-qa Digest, Vol 146, Issue 1
Hi Colomban, Currently, I work with Ilmari. I have only a foundation level in tests. And my computer has Windows 10. So, if a total beginner in accessibility tests could help you with the accessibility of LibreOffice, I am interested in this task. In August, I am on vacation, so my work is random. But in September, I would like to increase my participation to work more on LibreOffice gradually. Before my vacation, I worked 10 hours per week on LibreOffice. I would like to try to work 15 to 20 hours per week. So I think I could work on tests with Ilmari and with you. [Libreoffice-qa] TestLink to replace MozTrap, your help is wanted ; )
Hi all, As you may not know, we are migrating to TestLink instead of MozTrap to manage and run LibreOffice manual tests. The instance is here for the moment: https://vm182.documentfoundation.org/ Advantages are: - it is still maintained and developed (MozTrap is abandoned) - it has very nice ways to add and managed tests, bridge with BZ, make stats and so on. - it is localized (UI) in several languages - it is easy to run translated tests and managed fully localized sessions \o/ I'm currently learning how to use it and document it at the same time on the wiki: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TestLink Once done, I'll create tests based on BZ links Xisco sent me and we see relevant for manual tests. If you are interested to help me to work on the *English parts* only for the moment, these are: - documenting admin parts, - documenting how to tests, - documentingl10n management, - create tests, - bridge BZ - see how automatic tests are managed (this is possible but I didn't read anything for the moment, maybe this is relevant for development too) Any help is welcome and really appreciated to bring the instance live as soon as possible and have other eyes than mine in organizing the process. Thanks a lot in advance! But bug hunting sessions are dedicated to new features and testing them thoroughly before the releases, so what you propose is something different, but could be implemented under another name like "code squeezing sessions" that are organized in between to major version (like we are now, next bug hunting session should be somewhere around week 18 so this is about still 10 weeks without BHS) > > I expect a new approach with specific, changing goals (maybe each > session), to attract more people, to be more appealing, awakening a > feeling of urgency. [Libreoffice-qa] Fwd: 2016 budget proposals
Hi all, I would like to remind you about the budget proposal Florian has made some time ago, the deadline is approaching, so please don't miss it :) Cheers Sophie Message transféré Sujet : [Libreoffice-qa] 2016 budget proposals Date : Wed, 10 Feb 2016 18:05:25 +0100 De : Florian Effenberger <flo...@documentfoundation.org> Organisation : The Document Foundation Pour : libreoffice-qa@lists.freedesktop.org Dear community, the year 2015 is over, and we have achieved a lot of exciting things, thanks to your amazing work, dedication, passion and support - thank you so much for being part of our community and working with us on the joint goal of fostering LibreOffice! In order to support the community even better, we would like to create a better budgetting process, have a concrete plan for 2016 already now, with a few "pools" or "buckets" defined, ideally: 1. community events (aimed at getting face-time for community contributors) 2. infrastructure (e.g. compute power/hardware/storage, cloud, VMs), 3. marketing (aimed at representing the project to the outside world) 4. other (anything that does not fit into the above) The idea is to have a good plan for 2016 already now, while keeping the administrative overhead low, and have two authorizers (one of them being a board member or deputy, the other one from the wider community) responsible for each budget, which means getting receipts, approving and tracking expenses, and clarifying questions with Florian or Sophie. To get a better understanding of your needs, we ask you to send us your budget requests within *three weeks* from this e-mail, i.e. by 2016-03-02 to flo...@documentfoundation.org While I monitor some of the lists, please always send your proposals/requests *directly* to me so they are not lost! Please let us know your requests for funds *alongside* some items you envision to be paid from these funds. The items are not binding, the spending in the end is the responsibility of the authorizers, but some examples help the board in getting a better understanding of the funds required to best match your needs. If possible, please also mention the amount of travel costs associated. We'll factor in some margin, but concrete numbers and ideas are very much welcome to have a plan for 2016. As a sample, a request could look like this: ## We'd like to request a 2016 budget of 1000 € for community events 500 € for infrastructure 1500 € for marketing Expenses we envision are 1. marketing: attendance at XYZ trade show to show LibreOffice to ABC user group (700 € booth costs, 300 € for collaterals and 500 € of travel, totalling to 1500 €), 2. community: a community weekend to discuss tasks and ideas (600 € hotel, 100 € for snacks and 300 € travel, totalling to 1000 €), 3. infrastructure: dedicated server to QA localized versions (500 €) ## Alongside that, we will also provide some mechanism in Redmine for approvals and tracking of expenses, and will follow-up with details on this later on. Thanks again for all your work, and looking forward to your proposals! [Libreoffice-qa] Proposal for BH sessions organization
Hi all, So to sum up the topic and make a proposal: - BH on one day the Friday only (Cloph) - come with 10 features to test thoroughly during the BH, the list is taken from the release notes and selected by QA members, submitted to ESC, they could give a quick feedback/input, (derived from Cor and Miguel Angel ideas) - publish the list of feature to be tested on the BH session wiki page - dedicate a MozTrap run to this 10 features (to make the test run shorter, newer and then more attractive) - revive the bot Cloph has developed (never remind his name :) - advertise that BH takes place either on the mailing list and irc (maybe people are afraid by irc) or should we discuss having more "modern" communication channels like hangout too? So sad to hear that, Alex, the work you are doing on Mac, Base and all around is really tremendous, your withdrawal is a very very sad news for me and all the people who know you and appreciate to work with you since so long, I owe you so much. Please, take some time to breathe and come back. I'll put the issue on the agenda of the next QA meeting. I've been also flooded by BZ mails between Jan's work and the admin work, it's really difficult then to check if you're requested to act or not other than going through each of them, a big waste of time... Tommy's proposal was to simplify BZ approach on a user point of view. It is intimidating to go further when you're not sure what version you are using, and RC, beta are not clear things for users. What he was trying to find imho is a compromise between what is needed for QA and for users. Of course, the more granularity the better, but I think also that a long list of version is confusing. I'm not doing enough QA currently to have a firm opinion on Tommy's proposal, but I understand his request to shorten the 6 month period in this way. At the OOo time, it was the same, only from RC1, install was a production one. What we need is more people testing at the alpha and beta stage, we have very few people testing there and it let a too short time to find regression before the final version. But, we do not recommend to install the last version until the 3rd one, so we should find most of the regressions at that time. > > However if there is no commitment from the Devs to fix regressions then it > really doesn't matter at which stage you catch them... No, don't mix things :) I can assure you that none of our developers are happy with regressions. We monitor them closely. That's true that we don't rely only on the numbers as a regression might affect a very little number of people and in a very specific work - so it's a real regression, but it will have much less impact that one affecting hundred of people. The latter are monitored and attract the attention of the ESC and are escalated, bibisected then we invite the dev to have a look at it. If want to help in this area, we always need more people able to bibisect those bugs and try to find the responsible commit, let me know, I'll help you with the first steps. [Libreoffice-qa] Quick summary of the profile's study
Hi all, So as requested during the QA meeting, here is a quick summary of the study [1] that has been conducted by one FR member on the FR lists concerning the profile corruption. -- - based on feedback from users@fr and discuss@fr mailing lists - about 1300 messages have been sicked containing profil in them - version was 4.2.x and 4.3.x - per module concerned, the results are : LibreOffice, Writer, Calc. For 63% of them, resetting the profile didn't solve the problem, for 33% that solved the problem from which for 15% a partial modification solved the problem. The problem was concerning most of the time functionalities, display and crashes. The OS the most concerned was Windows for 75% (not a surprise as a large part of our users are running windows). For 11 times, modifying LibreOffice\4\user\config\soffice.cfg\modules solved a problem met with menus, toolbars, etc... For 7 times on 11, problems were du to extensions. When it was files that were concerned (17 submitted to the list) on 4 was solved by deleting registrymodifications.xcu. Since version 4 there are less problems reported. When it was about crashes, 8 times on 30 renaming the profile solved the problem and was more on old version (3.4 or 3.6). The conclusion was that the profile has a bad reputation but its corruption is not so easy. One reason could be the change between OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice. Another one is the lack of information on how it runs and its different files (example is given on the 'store' file or 'psprint' file where there is no explanation on the file.) So by documenting it, it should be easier to identify and solve the problems that a user may encounter. - [1] http://www.numericoach.net/?Le-profil-de-LibreOffice-est-il-si Cheers Sophie -- Sophie Gautier sophie.gaut...@documentfoundation.org GSM: +33683901545 IRC: sophi Co-founder - Release coordinator The Document Foundation ___ List Name: Libreoffice-qa mailing list Mail address: Libreoffice-qa@lists.freedesktop.org Change settings: http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-qa Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice-qa/
Re: [Libreoffice-qa] Recruiting Tactics
Hi Joel, Le 29/07/2015 19:36, Joel Madero a écrit : Hi All - So bug count is climbing again so I'm curious if people have any suggestions as to recruiting tactics. Our numbers went way way way down because of the incredibly hard work of lots of QA members, those members are still doing great work but their time is being divided a bit more so . . . we see bug numbers climbing. It is an ongoing battle to keep these under control. That being said - what are some suggestions as to recruiting? If we could try to add 2-3 people a month I think we would be in great shape. A couple suggestions that I have: 1) Go to the user list again - we tend to get push back from some members of user list who don't appreciate solicitation in the user forums...but, maybe? I think it's a good idea, even if some members don't like it. 2) Poke other contributor lists to see if people are being underutilized - I know for instance that Documentation team is pretty strong but there are down timeswe risk pissing off other teams for poaching but if members are being underutilized than...I see no problem encouraging them to contribute in QA *as well* as their original team; I'm not sure if the documentation team has down time, they have to update the guides for each version and for some of them, also translate them. Same for l10n, when they don't work on LibreOffice, they work on other open source software projects. 3) Leaving a footer of some kind on first contact with bug reporters that invites them into the QA chat (with the URL to the web client) - just say something like if you want to come visit QA land, we're happy to talk. good idea :) Maybe also organize more live sessions like the BH but dedicated to new comers. Something like Come on Tuesday, from 4 to 6 PM on irc, we will have a live triaging session with mentors available and reactivate the bot that gives you a random bug url to test it with the new comer. But I was mainly just sharing my work with the QA team, as it was a happy occasion for me that i was able to complete it, as this is the team i'm with and welcomed their constructive criticism of it. :D The UX team is currently migrating his work to Redmine, they will have a forum here, a wiki, and ticketing. Re: [Libreoffice-qa] [tdf-discuss] Intervention
Le 14/07/2014 09:10, jean-christophe manciot a écrit : Hello everyone, I've been aware of the following situation for a long time in the bug report forum, but I thought it would improve over time. Since it hasn't changed at all, I feel I have to blow the whistle on this. As I have already written in a specific thread, here's the situation: Could you point to that thread? I didn't see it on the QA list 1) Almost all bug reports checkcers don't even consider bug reports when they can't get the original file(s); I don't think they don't consider it, it's just very difficult to reproduce a bug without the original condition of the document producing it. I don't know what amount of triage you're doing, but most of the time, as a triager having the original document let you look into it and try to understand how the user meet it. 2) The same people mark bug reports as Resolved - Invalid / Not A Bug even when they are unable to confirm or deny them for whatever reason: no original file, different environment than the reporter, ... could you give bug numbers please, so we (QA members) can have a look at them. 3) It is not always possible for the bug reporters to hand over their original file(s), for many different reasons that are beyond the scope of this thread (confidentiality, legal concerns and so on...). there is most of the time a way to remove the confidential data and if the bug is serious enough to provide the doc directly to developers. I believe it is always possible for the checkers to trust the reporters and follow the steps to reproduce on their own material first; if they can't do that, they probably should ask themselves about their true motivations in this forum. I found what you say not fair for our QA members, they are doing their best to triage hundreds or reports each week. It is rare that the reporters use tricky configurations with tricky files and so on. Each way of work is different, each configuration may have their own settings depending on the company or the work. Moreover, in case these steps are unclear, the reporters are usually available to clarify their point, otherwise they would not have spent their time in the first place.*Only then* can some files be uploaded to check some very uncommon settings or the report be marked as invalid or whatever is the most appropriate. No, it's exactly the contrary, the more the bug is complete and reproducible with the document attached, the less the triager will spend time to reproduce and detail the bug. If the checkers continue to become more and more inflexible on this file issue, the risks are that some reporters will probably drop their cases and their involvement in this forum; the related bugs will remain within LO for a long time... Again, can you please point to bug numbers where you see bugs wrongly marked as invalid. The first work of a triager is to reproduce the bug to confirm it. If he can't confirm or reproduce it, it's because there is not enough information, or the specific document is missing. If his configuration is different (most of the time he has Linux and the bug is Windows or Mac), he requests for another member to triage the bug. Our irc channel is full of these requests, even the QA list. Is this what the checkers and LO community really need? I'm ccing the QA list, please follow up on this list if you want to discuss our triaging work. Putting it on the webpage is not a good idea, as most users just want their download without too much hassle. Those interested in the nitty gritty will find it. Also think that the download page would be a great location to encourage users to submit bugs. It already does. If you have concrete further suggestions, please take them to the website mailing list. I believe that if we wish to encourage users to submit bugs to LibO, then we need to have bug reporting more visible in the UI, like a bug icon in the app toolbar similar to the help icon, maybe a crash report dialog that appears after LibO crashes (like KDE), maybe a bug report button next to 'Help' and 'Extensions' in the main UI, and possibly an initial bug report request visible to users when they first run LibO. So, for one the main barrier to bug reporting is not a missing toolbar button etc.(although we already even have report a problem in the menu) but the hassles of needing a bugzilla account setup. Migrating to our own bugzilla will hopefully allow us simplifications there. If you are interested to help out there, Robinson will certainly be happy to get you started. The other thing is that we are not so much lacking bug reports, but lacking GOOD bug reports that have complete triaging info, reproduction scenarios etc. o the last thing we want really is making it simpler for people to file bad or incomplete bug reports that cause us more work than they help us. yes, and having bug reports in multiple languages won't help :) Cheers Sophie ___ List Name: Libreoffice-qa mailing list Mail address: Libreoffice-qa@lists.freedesktop.org Change settings: http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-qa Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice-qa/

Alternatively, is there an ODF test to validate if a ODF file outputted by an ODF compatible software complies to the ODF standard and can output the file as a pdf to show how it should be rendered, somewhat similar to the Acid test for CSS. As part of my extensive testing of .docx files in LibO, i'm currently testing ODF outputted by LibO to see how well its imported into Word 2010 and 2013, as well as testing ODF outputted by Word 2010 and 2013 to see how well its imported into LibO.
