When you look at the labels for the wrap features between the toolbar button,
context menu and image properties dialog (or the sidebar), they are not
consistent. Here are some examples.

Toolbar: Wrap Off
Context: No Wrap
Dialog: None

Toolbar: Wrap Left
Dialog: Before

Toolbar: Page Wrap
Dialog: Parellel

We presently have 7 uno commands for image wrapping except one that sets it to
parallel (.uno:WrapOn) and enables contour (.uno:WrapContour). MS Word has this
wrapping option called 'Tight' and it would be good to have something similar
which sets these two options at once and is easily selectable.

Also 'Wrap Through' and 'In Background' should likely be changed to something
more meaningful that people can easily understand like 'Above Text' and 'Behind

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 87787] New: Improve cell border assignment

2014-12-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87787

Bug ID: 87787
   Summary: Improve cell border assignment
   Product: LibreOffice

Not sure if this should be considered a bug or an enhancement, bug setting cell
borders in writer and calc are a major pain because cells that share the same
border visually can have different border settings and these border dont play
nicely together.

For writer, if you insert a table of 3x3, and in cell B2 you set the borders to
none, the left and bottom borders show as transparent but not the top and
right. I'm assuming the way the cells are being draw to make up the table maybe
causing it to look like this, as unfortunately there isnt a means for me to
open up the cell properties and see exactly what is going on. In order to
achieve what is intended, a user will likely have to jump through many hoops to
get the way it should be.

For calc, select a number of cells (e.g. C7:F16), and set their inner and outer
borders, then select one of the cells (e.g. E12) in the changed cells and set
its borders to none. You wont visually see a difference because the cells
around it all have their borders on. So in order to achieve what is intended, a
user will have to go to each of the 4 cells around it, open up the formatting
cell dialog and disable the related sides.

So the simple solution is that when a cell border is set or unset in any manner
(border width, style, color, etc), that its neighboring cells must also be set
or unset in the same way.

The formatting tool bars are always visible by default.
Depending on the state, they sort of change appearance.

Yes the object, image, and formatting toolbars hide and unhide depending on
context.

 See the discussion with Object.

Didnt understand this part.

In impress, when you click on a media clip a whole toolbar row is taken up by
the popup media playback toolbar, so it would be better to move this
functionality into the sidebar, as presently the sidebar properties tab only
has the 'position and size' content panel in it, which leaves it pretty much
empty.

For me this seems to be reasonable and sounds like a very good idea, because it
would then not take not necessary further space of the main window and because
in the PROPERTIES context Sidebar is a lot of unused space.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open IMPRESS
2. Go to INSERT - MOVIE AND SOUND and insert a sound or video file
3. (Optional if you had never activated the Media Playback in the past) Go to
VIEW - TOOLSBARS - Select the MEDIA PLAYBACK toolbar
4. Click on the media file

Result: The Media Playback toolbar appears in an extra line at the bottom.
Here you can now start the file, stop it, wind it forward etc.
Now take a look at the Sidebar on the right. In PROPERTIES section of the
Sidebar you have only the Position and Size values and a lot of unused space
below.

Reproducible with LO 4.3.4.1 (Win 8.1).

@Jay: Do you have the same further issues as I?
I have no tooltips for the Wind Forwards and Volume controllers.
The buttons in Media Playback toolbar could be a little bit darker or have a
higher contrast (in case of SIFR, CRYSTAL and TANGO icon style). The SIFR,
CRYSTAL and TANGO icon style have all the same buttons.
Does the Scale View drop-down list box have any effect for you?

Not sure if this should be considered a bug or an enhancement, bug setting
cell borders in writer and calc are a major pain because cells that share
the same border visually can have different border settings and these border
 dont play nicely together.

For writer, if you insert a table of 3x3, and in cell B2 you set the borders
to none, the left and bottom borders show as transparent but not the top and
right. I'm assuming the way the cells are being draw to make up the table
maybe causing it to look like this, as unfortunately there isnt a means for
me to open up the cell properties and see exactly what is going on. In order
to achieve what is intended, a user will likely have to jump through many
hoops to get the way it should be.

Strange and interesting. I did not recognized it before in WRITER. But for me
this is inconsistent and a buggy behaviour, because I see no reason for it.

For calc, select a number of cells (e.g. C7:F16), and set their inner and
outer borders, then select one of the cells (e.g. E12) in the changed cells
and set its borders to none. You wont visually see a difference because the
cells around it all have their borders on. So in order to achieve what is
intended, a user will have to go to each of the 4 cells around it, open up
the formatting cell dialog and disable the related sides.

This is for me also inconsistent and a buggy behaviour, because I can't see any
reason yet. Maybe anybody else has a good explanation? For me as a normal
user this is buggy and annoying. It is inconsistent for me, because inside a
table I have borders to distinct between cells. If I want to change it, why do
I have to change it from both sides? And in CALC I have also similar effect
as in WRITER. If I set in a number of cells inner and outer borders and then
select only one cell within them and change the colour of the total outer
border it gets only changed at the top and on the left.

So the simple solution is that when a cell border is set or unset in any
manner (border width, style, color, etc), that its neighboring cells must
also be set or unset in the same way.

I would agree. At least I don't have any idea yet, why it should not.
Maybe anybody else has also any further thoughts about these issues?

@Markus: Can you maybe also help with this issue? Do you have an explanation?
What are thoughts about it?

Confirming behavior.

Setting to UX-advise, this is a Sidebar configuration issue. Related our *lack*
of effective customization (bug 67770), and earlier work to provide each module
with its own Sidebar configuration (bug 69534).

Setting UX-advise, when resolving these issues of Sidebar customization
probably need to consider some of the enhancements needed for bug 33223 -
Sidebar: as container for toolbars, ability to add functions missing from
Sidebar, and similar.

Just more of the considerable UI functional design and UX that needs to be
ironed out to move Sidebar UI development along.

Expected result: change font size of source code.

It's not that the font size is enlarged (in Writer, Calc, ...) but that the

I think the possibility that Robinson gives is fine.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 87702] SIDEBAR: Properties tab Area content panel needs shadow options

Hi Jay,

Looks as a no-brainer initially.. however:

(In reply to Jay Philips from comment #0)
The Area dialog has 3 tabs in it (Fill, Shadow, Transparency)

It has 7 for a selected Shape in Writer.
That dialog does not exist for a selected Image in Writer..

Where did you see it :) ?

Do we run the risk that the current options in the Side Bar cater for all -
though limited, but that adding more is complicated for all situations?

Thanks,
Cor

Don't we have something as flip vertical / horizontal?
Hmm, that still isn´t the same of course ;)

Yep we do have flip vertical and flip horizontal, but unless both halves of the
image are exactly the same, they wont be the same as rotate 180.

If the image is smaller than the width of the page, it will push the bullet
entry to its right as if wrapping was set to after. If the image is larger
than the page width, it will shrink the image and place it above the bullet
line. Both are shown in the attached screenshot.

What works fine for me is adding a space first after the bullet.
The same what one has to do to dumb-paste any text in a paragraph marked as
heading or with bullets, to prevent changing the paragraph settings.
So I think there is some consistent - though advanced behaviour - here .. ?

Well the point was to consolidate all the currently available dialogs for
Line, Area, Text, etc. into a single dialog, so a user who wants to modify
the line transparency (only available in the sidebar) and add a shadow to
the area (only available in the toolbar) doesnt have to jump into two
 different dialogs to do so.

the dialog for Styles has 14 tabs..
So I guess that when you follow your path in the end you will have 13 tabs?
At least not adding to oversight ;\

 Yes my lord. :D

Ah well: the go ... and sin no more ;)

What about Tools Options Editors ... a field where one or more
 (separated) applications can be given?

Yes i think it would be good to have such a section to allow users to add
additional editors not automatically detected (Andy had a long list), but we
should do some automatic detection (even if it is just one per OS - GIMP
[linux], paint.exe [Windows], Not sure what [OSX]), just like we do with java
detection.

Was suggesting it at the bottom as then the result list wont be shifting up

Shouldn't be any problem given the examples I gave. So OK to do it at top ?

@Jay: Do you have the same further issues as I?
I have no tooltips for the Wind Forwards and Volume controllers.

Yes there aint tooltips for it, you should file that one. CC me if you want me
to confirm it. :D

The buttons in Media Playback toolbar could be a little bit darker or have a
higher contrast (in case of SIFR, CRYSTAL and TANGO icon style). The SIFR,
CRYSTAL and TANGO icon style have all the same buttons.

Yes the gradient on the stroke is causing it not to look that crisp. Yes they
are all falling back on the tango icons.

Does the Scale View drop-down list box have any effect for you?

No it is disabled for me and the tooltip just says 'View' which i was wondering
what that was supposed to mean.

Reproducible with LO 4.3.4.1 and 4.4.0.0.beta1 (Win 8.1)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open IMPRESS
2. Go to INSERT - MOVIE AND SOUND and insert a sound or video file
3. (Optional if you had never activated the Media Playback in the past) Go to
VIEW - TOOLBARS - Select the MEDIA PLAYBACK toolbar
4. Click on the media file

Result: The Media Playback toolbar appears at the bottom.

Through this the main window jumps up and down and this feels fitful/jerky. I
would also think that it should be moved up at the top.

@Jay: In the Bug Report 87794 you also propose alternatively to move the Media
Playback toolbar into the Sidebar. What would prefer most, to move it into the
Sidebar or at the top?

custom animation sidebar tab

The elements in the custom animation tab of impress are taking up to much
width, for no particular reason that i can see. You can see the main list
element is being cropped on the right, as well as the options button on the
direction line. I think we could easily change the options button from a text
button to an image button with an wrench icon. Doing this would also make room
to push the various controls from touching the left side of the sidebar.

Note: The size of the toolbar shown is the minimum size used in the properties
tab.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 87813] New: SIDEBAR: Incorporating the effects list into the animation tab

2014-12-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon

In impress, in order to add an effect, you click on a add effect button which
opens up a dialog where you select the effect you want to add. This seems to be
a very clumsy way of going about this when the contents of this dialog could
easily be integrated into the sidebar with a drop down list for effect category
and (ideally) a listbox for the effects list.

Another alternative is to have a single drop down list or listbox listing the
most important entries from each category that a user can choose from. When a
user doesnt find the effect they want to use, they will click on a 'More...'
button at the bottom of the list which would open up the effects dialog and
then a user can choose an entry from the list. Once chosen, that entry will now
be shown in the condensed list for easy access to the next time the user wants
to use it.

Err, we should not favor AM/PM artificially. It should use the format specified

Thanks for sharing your idea.

This is a little worrying. I can imagine other projects’ leaders roaring
because of alleged “unfair competition” (as if we were competing). Also, I
personally hate it when software adds advertisement to e-mails, such as the
hideous “Sent from my iPad”. Let’s face it, it’s advertising.

I would leave the users’ e-mail content alone, and leave the recommendation of
ODF-compatible software at their discretion.
