Good screenshot. For the implementation in LibreOffice however, I would choose
to work with font families instead of fonts. Otherwise the view is cluttered
really fast.

@Cor (comment 22)

The discussion about the button was started by me in the comments thread of:

http://user-prompt.com/libreoffice-design-session-entries-at-indexes-and-tables

I agree that the Paragraph Style drop-down should be disabled when all
levels are selected.

@Jay (comment 23)

I see your point. However, what is to stop a user from selecting all levels
after he has made his changes to the entries? As long as this action doesn't
reset his changes, nothing of his work is lost.

Another question is: How does an inexperienced user know there is an all
levels selection? It is hidden in the drop-down. Is there a solution
possible for that?

You can add an online image in the image file dialog already if you paste the
url as location.

A combination with online image search makes more sense - but this was already
an existing idea (to use OpenClipart as an image provider).

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 90090] Rearranging the UI of Draw

2015-03-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90090

--- Comment #10 from V Stuart Foote vstuart.fo...@utsa.edu ---
(In reply to Jay Philips from comment #9)

Default page layout for new blank Draw documents should default to
landscape. Import filters should still honor the image/graphic or document
page structure of the incoming object of course. But with this major UI
rework, now would be the time to shift to correct orientation for a
  default.

Yes if the default page orientation isnt the most suitable one then it
should be changed but i dont see other related apps go for landscape over
 portrait.

If we think of using Draw to prepare illustrations/graphics for use in other
ODF documents, the Portrait orientation of the page/graphic is not optimal.

It is made worse as the default size opens at Letter/A4 size.

Practical truth is that most illustrations/graphics being prepared in Draw
would benefit from a smaller default page/graphic size--either square as an
Icon, or in Landscape mode. Proportioned to better place onto a document page
as an OLE. Likewise for a illustration/graphic being prepared to place into an
Impress presentation--Landscape graphics are more often needed than Portrait.

Providing a cleaner UI (Sidebar content panel, and maybe tweak the context
menu) to resize and orient the page/graphic size will help with that.

Defaulting to Landscape would provide better UX by requiring less fuss at the
start of the drawing session.

Another alternative idea would be not only allow a user to paste a url but also
the ability to search through online image sources. Google Docs and MS0 2013.

 ... I would
consider that having the pane in its enabled but hidden state is likely the
best default view, as there isnt a need to see the pane when a document only
has a single page in it.

Agree, auto-toggle visible when document has more than one page/graphic would
be reasonable handling of the Pages pane.

Default page layout for new blank Draw documents should default to landscape.
Import filters should still honor the image/graphic or document page structure
of the incoming object of course. But with this major UI rework, now would be
the time to shift to correct orientation for a default.

And for Draw to be a more functional illustration tool, it does need additional
vector and bitmap tools, as well as the ability to identify and manipulate the
layers that make up an illustration, or document. But scope of that work would
require considerable refactoring and development of additional widgets (beyond
existing straight lines, bezier curves, and predefined shapes) within LO.

Display and manipulation of current Layers and OLE might be possible sooner,
and stacking/grouping/and visibility would be good candidate to display in a
new Sidebar content panel.

Also, near term, page/graphic layout for drawing (the current Page setup
context menu dialog) would be a good set of controls to include in a a Content
panel--the now empty/suppressed Properties perhaps--for the Sidebar in Draw.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 90126] New: Add an online image to a document

2015-03-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90126

Bug ID: 90126
Summary: Add an online image to a document
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 4.5.0.0.alpha0+ Master
  Hardware: Other
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: medium
 Component: ux-advise
  Assignee: libreoffice-b...@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: philip...@hotmail.com
CC: libreoffice-ux-advise@lists.freedesktop.org

Its possible to add a locally accessible image to a document, so it would also
be useful to add an online image to a document.

The implementation would be quite simple.
1) Click button or menu item to insert online image.
2) Dialog appears asking for URL of the image.
3) Image is downloaded to a temp folder and inserted into the document and then
removed from temp folder.

Yes by font family would be the way to go, though LO doesnt detect font
families correctly (bug 72944), so one way or another the list will be
cluttered. :D

So i'd assume the grid would have the following fields :-

enable checkbox
family name
number of styles
type

@Stephen: Well my comment was made with the assumption that all levels wasnt
an entry in the drop down list. If the all levels entry is included in the
drop down list, then it should be the first entry and preselected by default.
But even with the all levels entry available, there will be situations where
the entries in a single modified level would want to be applied to all the
levels, so the button would always have a reason to exist.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 90090] Rearranging the UI of Draw

2015-03-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90090

--- Comment #9 from Jay Philips philip...@hotmail.com ---

Agree, auto-toggle visible when document has more than one page/graphic

Yep that sounds good.

Display and manipulation of current Layers and OLE might be possible sooner,
and stacking/grouping/and visibility would be good candidate to display in a
 new Sidebar content panel.

Yes it would be good if LO had more of this functionality. Totally agree that
the most important would likely be layers, so users dont have to deal with
object arrangement through the toolbar or context menu and would be able to do
simple manipulation (e.g. hiding a layer).

Also, near term, page/graphic layout for drawing (the current Page setup
context menu dialog) would be a good set of controls to include in a a
Content panel--the now empty/suppressed Properties perhaps--for the Sidebar
 in Draw.

Yes it would be good to have sections of the pages tab i suggested in bug 83830
(attachment 106594) to be shown in the properties pane for Draw, similar to the
suggested background section for impress (bug 89466).
