[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 68486] FORMATTING: make line end (shift enter) work the same as paragraph end with last line setting 'left' for alignment justified

2019-08-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68486

(In reply to Bob from bug 126895 comment #0)
> New paragraph was created with Shift-Enter, the only way I know to start
> a new paragraph in an outline without it striking a new outline number.

I want to repeat once more: the whole thing is because of using wrong tool tof
the task. Manual line break feature *is not* starting new paragraphs: it's just
a manual override for *automatic line break*, and must behave identically to
that automatic line break (except for manual application), just like manual
hyphenation (e.g. using soft hyphen) compared to automatic hyphenation, etc.

There is a *proper, dedicated* tool for the said task: Insert Unnumbered Entry
(available in menu Format=>List, on Bullets and Numbering toolbar, and
available for customization like assigning a keyboard shortcut). It inserts the
unnumbered *paragraph* *into the list*, which properly follows the indents of
the list.

In LibreOffice you position the left object and the right object, then mark all
24 objects together and distribute them. I do not understand what you are
missing.

The purpose of this command is to allow editing templates, which aren't listed
in the template manager. That's why it shows the file open dialog. See Bug
61396 where it was added to the menu.

Only that its title is confusing: "Open Template" sounds like:
1. It's going to show a list of templates to choose from.
2. After selecting a template, a new document will be created, based on the
selected template.

Both are wrong. It shows the file open dialog to allow selecting the template
from an arbitrary place, and it open the template itself for editing, not a new
document based on the template.

It's a question of productivity. A recent use case: distributing 24 purlins on
the top of a pergola. Sure, one could position 24 snap lines, make 23 copies of
a purlin object, then position 24 purlins. It would be much easier to position
two snap lines, one at each end, snap two purlin objects to those lines, then
distribute 22 purlins between those two. [It has been possible to do this in
Visio for at least twenty years.] A nice feature; that it does not exist does
not make it a bug.

2019-08-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Thanks Heike for looking at this idea. I totally get the problem with ODF.
Obviously ODF has its own update cycle, and new features can, over time, be
incorporated. But the ODF standard group (I don't know its formal name)isn't
going to mandate a new feature like this one, without substantial support from
the office software companies. And I suspect the software companies aren't
deluged with user requests for a cyclic cell-addressing mode.

So, like a lot of these things, it's chicken and egg.

Meanwhile, I'll hope someone invents a time machine, so I can go back to 1978
and have a word with Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston. If I am successful, you
won't notice anything changing. Cyclic addressing will be the way it always
was. (And this conversation won't have happened.)

1. A pivot table can be created based on the example data “Car Inventory”.

2. The fields “Branch” and “Car model” can be chosen then for the rows.

3. I suggest to take another look at the software behaviour for a double-click
on an entry like “City AA”.
Do you see how data are hidden and displayed again?

LibreOffice follows the specification of the open document format. And as
Regina pointed out, there is no such property to combine charts. That's mostly
why I resolved the ticket as WF. The other argument is that split-plot diagrams
are out of scope for an office suite.

Eike, any chance to unleash the power of external data? I believe it makes not
much sense and will be a source of confusion to have variable data in charts
only but not in the spreadsheet.

I am curious under which circumstances better solutions will be considered for
this issue.
How much do you care for improvements around axis sharing with charts?

I don't understand clicking on a col/row header as an inconvenience. In fact it
is just one click versus two for the menu. We would have to introduce new
commands, which bloats the API further with detriment on maintenance what makes
me reluctant to agree here. Accessibility would be an argument...

I think you're mixing things up. On the left you have the search box, on the
right, the navigate by menu, they have different purposes. Maybe they should be
separated to make it clearer.

> * Add fields

I suppose you're thinking to right-click at the Available Fields list and want
to add columns from the spreadsheet, right? If you talk about adding the
available field to row/column/data, as an alternative to drag 'n drop, it could
be an accessibility enhancement.

> * Delete fields

Again, if you have Available Fields in mind you can just ignore the entry. In
case of Column/Row/Data Field the context menu could return the dropped entry
back to the available fields. A lot of effort for not much benefit except
accessibility.

> * Adjust filter criteria

You want to filter before creating the chart? This function is not related to
the fields and therefore not suited for a context menu

It would indeed be cool to have a grid based on your own axis direction. The
dimetric 42°, 7° (DIN) is needed too. But it would be a large effort to
implement it, because not only the display it affected, but the snap features
too. So let us set it on the wish list and hope for sponsors.

I don't understand why you would need a filter like ="a" (case sensitive)
AND ="\n" (regular expression). And usually the table contains of numbers
where these options are irrelevant.

There are plenty of options to sort/filter/select data. Please give an example
of your complexity.

As a note: You filed a lot of tickets around charts and pivot tables and we are
happy for every input. Even when some of your ideas get rejected, please don't
hesitate to continue. Thing is that we have to balance easy of use for novices
and extended functionality for experts, so some less frequently used or very
special enhancement requests drop out. And last but not least we have to
consider the limited development resources.

Taking Regina's comment for resolving this as WF. You can group charts or have
