[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 153989] Autocorrect uses language-specific quotation marks for other languages

The feature this bug regards is the replacement of quotes with "smart quotes",
or matching start & end quote pairs. The current implementation is faulty: It
will result in invalid/incorrect quote pairs if there is text in at least two
languages whose matching quote pairs are different.

Even if the current implementation was intentional - which I doubt - the bug is
in the intention/design of the feature.

IIRC as Eike explained for bug 116062 bug 105837 and similar, it does not come
from CLDR or ICU LDML, but we do provide values by os/DE locale in the
i18npool/source/localedata/data XML which is used to load the parenthesis
defaults per UI locale.

Meaning, it should be possible to adjust things in the AutoCorrect UI and
associated editshell(s) to pick the same up by language at the paragraph level,
and behave just like spell checking.

And kind of seems work for this would include effort needed for bug 153987

   |be language-sensitive |marks for other languages
   Severity|enhancement |normal

Sorry, I got confused with my previous comment, please ignore it.

Let me clarify:

* This bug is not about the dialog at all. It's about what Autocorrect does
when applied - regardless of what's happened in the dialog (or with the default
settings without the dialog every having been accessed). I don't know if LO,
internally, has a mapping from languages to quotation-mark pair definitions; if
it doesn't, the bug goes deeper than I had assumed. Anyway, bug 153987 is about
exposing per-language quotation mark choice in the dialog.

* This bug is not an enhancement request. There is no universal pair of
quotation marks, and LO should not try to apply one when AutoCorrect is
triggered. When you autocorrect as you type, naturally the corrections need to
be language-aware, particularly w.r.t. quotation mark replacement.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 153989] AUTOCORRECT DIALOG: Quotation settings should be language-sensitive

2023-03-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=153989

(In reply to Dieter from comment #2)

Ok, but then the question is: Does LO, internally, hold a mapping of language
to quotation marks choice, or does it currently only hold a single choice?

If it's the former, then it's a proper bug for the dialog to only expose one of
these choices. If it's the latter - then, it's also a bug, because there is no
universally-viable pair of quotation marks. But then it's not a dialog bug.

At any rate, I don't believe it's an enhancement request.

Heiko, I can't make sense of your statement, as this bug is about what happens
when _changing_ the out-of-the-box behavior. If you're saying that there is
never any need to change the out-of-the-box behavior, then, well - if the UI
for changing the quote chars is removed, this bug will become invalid; but
while that UI exists, this bug is relevant.

Eyal, I think, you're right, that settings are not language sensitive. But I
don't think, that this is intended. So I change description to enhancement and
add design-team

As far as I can see, language setting at top of dialog, is only related to
replace and exceptions tab. But that should be more clear within the dialog
(see bug 153987).

This is even worse for Calc, as it ALWAYS defaults to selection/selected sheet
when exporting to PDF and there is no way to change that. Quite annoying,
considering I never had a need to only export part of a document, after all,
printing and exporting are two completely different things.

(For me, in gtk3, the Form Controls toolbar is docked before the Standard
toolbar, which is another issue.)

Two different commands are used:
- Form Design Controls and the Form menu both use the UNO command
.uno:SwitchControlDesignMode
- Form Design toolbar uses .uno:SwitchXFormsDesignMode

...which explains why they are not entirely synced.

However, their tooltips are respectively "Design Mode" and "Design Mode
On/Off", which is very prone to confusion. I assume most users would think they
have exactly the same function.

I can reproduce the odd conflict in which the Form Design buttons are available
to add controls but using them has no effect. However, I am not familiar at all
with XML forms, so copying UX team in to have more input.
