But what you actually do far away from the document content is to move the cursor. And like clicking somewhere in the paragraph and moving the mouse down you make a selection. It becomes a big arrow pointing to the left when you are in the area left of the table for selecting a row, or it's a downward arrow for columns, and on the top-left edge the arrow points to south-west indicating the table selection. If we increase the area you run into trouble when you want to add something next to the table, e.g. the text above.
