If you are question other options of email services, I would say that you either have two options. Host yourself, which is difficult, but a interesting challenge or to let someone else host for you. It's that your question though? ___ libreplanet-discuss mailing list libreplanet-discuss@libreplanet.org https://lists.libreplanet.org/mailman/listinfo/libreplanet-discuss

You may find this page of interest: https://www.fsf.org/resources/webmail-systems You mention that Gmail email is not stored locally. No email is ever automaticaly stored locally. It is up to user to decide to store it locally or pull it from remote server to your local computer. Gmail can be pulled from remote server to local computer just as any other type of an email inbox. Best option for email is that you host it yourself as that way you have so much control. Your inbox is as large as the VPS or dedicated server that you rent. Virtual Private Servers are now already US $2.5 to US $5 per month. I may recommend Courier MTa http://www.courier-mta.org/ which is available in many GNU/Linux distributions. It is quite easy to install and it has a simple wizard, web interface for later administration, and webmail that supports PGP Encryption. So far I know no Javascript is necessary. On Android/LineageOS or Replicant fully free OS for mobile devices you may use the K9 application or any other email application. But K9 supports encryption. So you may use K9 to read emails which remain on server. VPSes are available on Digital Ocean Web Hosting: https://m.do.co/c/564f4aeba6a8 and other good company I know is https://www.servetheworld.net in Norway There is also Vultr.com and others. Once you have your VPS, you can tell me and I can help you install the Courier MTA on your server. ___ libreplanet-discuss mailing list libreplanet-discuss@libreplanet.org https://lists.libreplanet.org/mailman/listinfo/libreplanet-discuss

Hi Don, Don Saklad writes: > What email can folks try that's in harmony with principles of > Libre software and like gmail isn't stored locally? I'm assuming you're talking about email service providers rather than email clients. You could self-host email of course but many people don't have the skills or time to bother with all that. I have been using Migadu[0] since reading this article by Drew Devault[1] reviewing various mail service providers. Unlike Gmail it is not free of charge, but their pricing is very fair I think. You *do* need to have registered your own domain name however in order to use Migadu. Really it's best to have your mail address be @ your own domain regardless of which provider you choose as, crucially, it allows you to switch providers while keeping the same email address, preventing you from being locked in to one company. (I have no affiliation with Migadu other than being a customer of theirs.) Regards, Greg. Thanks. There, it mentions Email-in-a-Box: https://mailinabox.email/ The only way to have control of your email is to have your own server, which will be under your control. With Email-in-a-Box you can set up your own email server without much IT knowledge. I have never tested it. https://mailinabox.email/guide.html It looks nice, besides the fact that you need to have unblocked SMTP ports, which most home connections do not have open. So you must use a virtual server, which would not be under your control. The only real solution is to pay the price to have a public fixed IP address with unblocked SMTP ports (ports 25, 465 and a couple of others). A way to do this cheaply is to agree with others to share the cost. ___ libreplanet-discuss mailing list libreplanet-discuss@libreplanet.org https://lists.libreplanet.org/mailman/listinfo/libreplanet-discuss

I would not suggest that anyone host their own email unless they are also a security/administration expert. You won't be in control of your email, or the many digital identities tied to it, when your cloud or home server gets hacked. For additional information, you can cross-reference the FSF's webmail system list with the one on privacytools.io, which focuses more on the privacy/security front: https://www.privacytools.io/providers/email/ For example, Tutanota appears on both lists.
