Caldera Linux on L50

From: "E. Smith" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Caldera Linux on L50

Anyone running Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 on a Libretto 50? I'd like to get it installed
without having to put the drive in another computer to get Linux on it. Any
suggestions?

Also, for the future, anyone able to use the floppy drive? I anticipate problems with
it and have read reports of problems with it (perhaps due to a lack of a Linux driver).

The floppy drive works (with complicated patching and a kernel
recompile) but will not work with a standard off-the-shelf linux boot
disk.

Subject: Re: Caldera Linux on L50

I was unable to persuade caldera 2.4 to load from hard disc while I was
setting up the demo units on FutureWorld...the manual seemed to indicate
that it was possible but I never managed it so if anyone knows how to do it
I'm keen to find out, I like Caldera 2.4! Admittedly, I didn't have time to
investigate in detail and the method I used below might work.

I use mandrake 6.1 at present on the Lib 50, without any drivers for the
floppy as it's so rare I use it - the technique was to dual partition the 6g
disk as 4 and 2g for windows and linux respectively, then copied the
mandrake disk from a networked windows machine and launched from the
/mandrake/dosutils directory.

Cheers,
Neil

  1. Does anyone have the Floppy driver for Windows 98? I installed a
toshiba of course! www.csd.toshiba.com - support - drivers

Thanks David for the suggestion, but the only FDD there is for NT, I run 98.

  2. The drive I have is a 2.1 gig drive that has been limited to 1.6 by
Toshiba. Is there a software tool to regain this space?
BIOS downgrade! to 6.20 or earlier.

Thanks! I found that at the page above, will do.

Where can you get Win98SE? Does it download from Microsoft when you update,
otherwise how do you obtain it? thanks!

Hi Brad,

Win98SE? You can get it anywhere that sells Windows OS.
"SE" stands for Second Editon (not Special Edition :).
All off-the-shelf Win98 boxes should be SE by now. Same
for all desktops and notebooks that shipped with Win98
late last year and this year. Anyway, during bootup,
the splash screen will display "Windows 98 Second Editon"
instead of just "Windows 98".

Update from Microsoft? Nah...they would rather you
"upgrade" to WinME. :)

Right. SO, grab the 95 accessories download and find it in there.

For the most part, you can
  1) Update Win98 to Win98 using the service pack upgrades at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
  2) Update it using the CD-ROM disc they sell at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/default.asp
  3) Buy it in the stores or at a local computer dealer (www.microtimes.com
dealers in S.Calif. sell them by the truckload as do ebay.com and other online
stores listed in www.shopper.com)

In short, for 99% of the features found in Win98SE, you can simply download
it using Windows Update and be done with it. There might be a few itsy bitsy
differences, but mostly non-issues for 99% of the users out there. One for
example is the proper operation of ICM (Image color matching) under Win98SE
according to Photoshop users. Beyond that, there really isn't anything you'd
have to worry about since the majority of the downloads only update the big
components of Win98 (IE, Outlook, etc.), and the usual security patches and bug
fixes that even Win98 has a truck load of to download.

Naturally, the security problems are mostly moot points once you've ripped
out IE using 98Lite.net's program and stuck in Netscape (while it does have
problems, it isn't as bad as one can see by the numerous IE updates out vs. the
minor Netscape updates).
