Subject: 3.27G HDD on L50CT Problem ! help!

Is anybody using IBM Travelstar DKLA-23240 HDD which is 3.24G on Libretto
50CT?
I was trying to install it but it didn't go well. PLEASE HELP ME

After I connect my HDD on to connector, I was tryng to FDISK it, it found
HDD and
I chose to have two partition one giga byte for drive C and rest of space
for drive D.
I made primary, extended and logical partition. then rebooted lib. then use
format c: /s
on drive C and format d:. it formatted without error except it has bad
MBR(Master Boot Record)
when I check partition status, partition type was FAT12 for drive C and
unknown for D.
Also when I tried Disk Manager to go around old-BIOS problem (I suspected
this as a problem)
I got message that MBR are being redirected to another record.
I tried low level format, but it didn't work either.
Now, I'm suspecting that this redirecting MBR is due to BIOS preservation
for hibernation.
I also tried to use fips.exe to go around this problem, it says that my MBR
is ok but it
can not find the FAT32 signiture from the HDD then it terminate.

If some one has knowledge about this matter, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

Hi Guys,

No problem - I can send you the install files if you want - (they're about 1.3M).

Although I prefer it to the win98 management, there's just a couple of things I should
probably mention -

1. I got them off one of the Japanese install CDs for my L1050, but I suppose they'd
work on the 100 (they work in win 98)

2. It's never handled hibernation (you know, the ol' picture of RAM->Hard-drive
thing) since I did the initial English install (necessary due to my lack of kanji
skills), but this may not affect the 100s.

and 3. (probably unrelated) I had an intermittent problem coming out of
screen-save(monitor off) where my computer would lock up and require the reset-stab,
possibly related to display drivers/98lite/japanese bits and pieces.

I have ended up just living with the previous problems - have turned off "display off"
settings and don't use hibernation - just came to terms with the fact that even
without these power-saving bits, the standard battery on the 1050 still lasts for over
2 hours.

So - generally works pretty well, and at least with the light-bulb I was able to set
maximum processing power when in battery-mode, which the win98 power management didn't
seem to be able to manage easily.

Just let me know if you want the files,

cheers,

Simon

A HD sector editor would let you manually alter the master file directory,
then let you chain files together sector by sector by hand.

Since all directories pretty much are laid out like: Directory Listing for
File0001 points to first HD sector #, with pointer to second sector, which
points to second HD sector # and has a pointer to the their sector

..it is merely a matter of locating the first sector of your ZIP (or any other
file you want to recover), locating the second sector, and so forth, then
making sure the directory is properly updated with this information.

Yes, you can spend days working on this recovering multi-MB files by hand,
but it works fine.

As for a program that writes 1's to disk, I wouldn't know. I'd just write a
program myself. Maybe www.softseek.com or www.deja.com/usenet has some clues.

Does Windows crash or do anything bad? It's either the HD head moving about,
or HD failure. Both IBM and Toshiba have low-level diagnostics programs you
can run on the HD to make sure nothing bad is happening, just in case.

No idea. But one person who did try it recommended against it. It is such a
tight fit that it damaged the MB/circuitry around the area and caused problems
for that one person.

however, that was merely an example of stupidity. If the card, if out of spec
sizewise, was too hard to squeeze in, then why did that person proceed? I'm
sure another PCMCIA fan card, if the proper size, would fit just fine and not
cause problems.

Remember, for all electronic equipment, it shouldn't need much force to put
together. If it does, something is most likely wrong and you shouldn't force
it in -- or else you'll risk damage.

How is it possible to recover that way? I can imagine to recover some text
but what about zip archives?
BTW which HD sector editor do you consider as good? While I am on it which
would easily fill unpartitioned space (from cylinder to cylinder) with 1's?

It fails more often too.

I have a couple more questions.
1 From time to time I hear a rather loud click inside and Windeows freezes
in that moment. This problem was present from the first time I installed the
drive. What that could be?
2 Some time ago I read from your page about SIIG PCMCIA fan. Have you seen
Win2k drivers for it?

I don't think BIOS creates a partition to hibernate at all. It just write
directly to the area where it thinks it should be.

Thanks to all of you who answered. That was very useful!
I am going to erase my 912-1093 partition, let Windows
hibernate, and observe what it does. Will "fdisk" be able
to see the hibernation partition? If not, what should I
use (my disk has Windows 98, RedHat 5.2 and RedHat 6.3).

Thanks again,

Iliano.
