What would be really useful is cylinder settings/numbers of where the end of
the 8G partition *is* on various large drives, to enable easy setting of
e.g. linux fdisk/diskdruid/diskdrake etc.

Off the top of my head - whichever speed of chip is in the 50/70, they're
all pentium 1 - so there's no MMU on there :(

Don't believe stickers on the outside of the box, the only way to tell if
you have a 75 or 120 is to dive inside and pull the heatsink.

Matt,

One pin snip for 75-100, a bit of soldering for the 120/133/166 speeds.

*Most* lib 50s will work with the system clock raised but there have been a
couple of units where the rest of the system doesn't like it (hard disc
controller chip sulks!)

Hi Tim,

I wouldn't have too much faith in what the "Intel Inside" sticker says, I
think they just slap on whatever they happen to have lying around at the
time. The sticker on my Lib 100 says "Pentium II inside" (!!) but it's only
a Pentium 166 of course. Have you tried Intel's own CPU identification
utility?

Matt,

The limit on floppy access is the data density and the rotational
speed...i.e. not much and bugger all. It may be *slightly* faster using a 32
bit driver as there isn't a processor context change when accessing the
driver but I wouldn't expect much difference.

upgrades to a 70CT

Subject: upgrades to a 70CT

I love my Libretto, and I love this list, but I don't know much about
computer hardware...so...if I want to add more RAM memory, a new battery,
and a bigger hard drive, are these all things that a careful novice can do?
I have not done anything more complicated than add RAM to my other laptop
and a CD-RW to my desktop.

I am going to check ebay for the battery, but do any of y'all have
suggestions on where to pick up suitable RAM and a hard drive?

My 70CT still runs the original Win95 system...I might upgrade to Win98, but
I am afraid that the performance will be awful. Any comments? I am content
to run Win95, but would like the system tools and infrared capabilities of
98...but don't want the system to "chug!"

I , at last , identify the problem :

it seem to be the graphic card bus type , I always thought that it was a
PCI one ,

becausebecause I hope it s a PCI , but XFree seem to be sure that it
s an ISA
bus wich control the CT65550 ,
who is right ?
me or xfree ?
PCI or ISA ?

I searched in the user's manual , in the david's site , in the utilities
provided by win98 ,
and norton , but the truth seem to be out there

I need this technical info before bothering XFree86.org with my little
tiny problem

Lib 50/70 graphics card bus type is VESA Local Bus. Only L100 and newer
models have PCI bus. Basically the chipset for L50/70 is based on 486-era
structure.

This is bothering me too, but in W2K. Makes one start to wonder then...
Neither the CT65550 (source Toshiba and the web) or the CT6 (source the
list) seems to work for me. Anybody got a better grip on the matter?

Was thinking of buying Corel Linux, it's in the shops here for USD 50, but
might just give some-or-other-magazine-distro a shot. But if it's
problematic in Linux too then I might drop the idea.

Hi Neil,

I kind of suspected that the technology of the old FDD wasn't going ot be
speeded up much. Rather than look into a PC card FDD, I suppose if I was
really serious I'd look into a PC Card Zip drive. A CD-R would be slick,
but I've still not overclocked this 50CT to 100MHz (I'd really prefer to
wire a switch in to go back to 75MHz and increase battery life using W98,
but I don't feel that confident at making those changes).

I'd guess a system would have to have a minumum amount of power this stock
50CT doesn't have in order to power a CD-R drive.

Good hearing from you again Neal. It's nice to know that so many of you
guys are still hanging out here as dedicated to these little guys as ever!

Matt

FUBAR 3(!) - help *DESPERATELY* needed

2001-01-02 Thread Fubar Libretto

Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2001 17:39:46 -
From: "Fubar Libretto" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: FUBAR 3(!) - help *DESPERATELY* needed

I can't switch my L110 on.

I press the on/off button in the lid, and the LH "On" light comes on
(green), followed by the HDD light for a second or two. There is no
flickering, the "On" light is continuous, the HDD light just comes on and
goes off and that's it. The "On" light remains on, nothing else happens - no
indications of life on the screen or from the HDD - absolutely everything is
completely inactive apart from the four lights above the screen (the
'battery' and 'external power' lights operate as normal).

Pressing the on/off button again has no effect; the only way to get the "On"
light to go out is to remove the battery and disconnect the external power
supply.

Pressing the 'reset' switch through the pinhole on the RHS makes the HDD
light come on for a second or two, then it goes off again - exactly the same
as when I press the on/off button.

I've tried with and without external power, with two different batteries,
and with no battery installed.

There are no beeps or other sounds (other than words of disbelief - this
L110 is only 9 months old and I've already had a complete HDD failure and
total loss of data, followed by the trashing of most of my files because the
repairing Toshiba agent didn't set up the new HDD for hibernation...)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - tell me this isn't as bad as it looks like it could
be?!?

I'd say they're all about the same. I'd probably pick an IBM myself since it
as all the utilities online at their web site (Toshiba doesn't have the disk
manager program online) in case you need them, and hopefully, avoid the C/S
mess altogether. Spec-wise, they're very similar so there won't be any big
differences, esp. since the Librettos don't support faster connections like the
Ultra/66 speeds.

That's only possible in Japan. http://www.maxuscomputer.com/ is one place.

Or simply see if the L50 you have has a 120Mhz CPU. If so, you've got a very
good chance that you can safely OC to 133Mhz, and probably 166Mhz like Xin did
with his L50.

Nope. Only get's rid of the 16-bit DOS compatiblity mode that shows up when
you bring up Properties for My Computer. Otherwise, it's still about 1 1/2
mintues to write/read an entire floppy disk.

Nope. the only sure way to tell what speed is to open the machine, and read
the print on the CPU top itself.

Ignore the sticker. As noted years ago in this list, they simply stuck the
same sticker on all the Librettos w/o regard to the fact that the L50 doesn't
have any MMX support.

Maya,

I've had Win98 installed on my 50CT for about a year now. The system has
the full 32MB RAM it can handle, and I've not noticed any appreciable
difference in performance speeds at all. I'm constantly adding and removing
programs, having to fix Windows messes and all, and I find the tools that
come along with Win98 to be quite handy.

The only area where I notice any real difference is in power consumption. I
think I used to get around an 50 minutes to an hour's worth of power out of
Win95, and now I get around 45 minutes with Win98. However I don't usually
do a whole lot of work on the unit where I don't have access to either
110VAC or 12VDC. I bought a really nice DC to AC power converter that the
guys on this list recommended last summer, as I was getting a loud buzzing
when playing MP3s through the car stereo with the old converter. So power
hasn't been a big issue for me at least.

That would be WONDERFUL, as it sounds like I could fix it!!! :-)

Is there any way I can confirm or eliminate the CMOS battery as the culprit?

Should I just buy a new one and try it?

Where is it, how do I physically access it?

Is the CMOS battery for a Libretto common to other Toshiba laptops?

Many many many TIA

Heh... it'd be nice if I could make any sense out of all those squiggley
characters! Any idea of what they charge?

Actually my friend speaks fluent Japanese. He could help sort out the info
on their website. I'm still guessing that trading this 50CT in on a 70CT
would be the cheaper, more practical route.

No... I've been under the hood. It is in fact a P75. This was one of the
first bunch of 50CTs. I got it in 1998 at a post Christmas sale when they
were still being sold at Circuit City here in California.

The darned thing still has that hardware glitch that doesn't allow me to
configure an external mouse in >W95< without setting up a secondary hardware
profile in Windows. The only person I've spokewn with who knew who to get
that one set up was a Toshiba tech support guy I got on the phone after a
half dozen calls. But now that I have W98 setup, I've not been able to get
that work-around to work at all. But I have been getting darned good at
photo editing in PhotoShop with the Accupoint!! :-P
