I'll see if i have a URL when i get home tonight... RAIN basically runs in
the background, and
adds waits to the processor when its not in use... I think its functions
which are built into newer
processors to save power... but the net effect is i get about 15-30min
longer from my batteries
and the unit runs cooler... with ZERO noticable negative effects. Its a
slick program... i added
it originally to cut down on heat when i use the Libby as a wireless
internet terminal (using the
webgear 2.4 wireless nics, which are excellent btw)

I was using my 50CT as an mpeg jukebox AND running moving map software
with GPS input at the same time - without any problems - well, it DID
stutter whenever a new map had to be loaded from disk (several
megabytes). It was overclocked to 100MHz and was running Rain to keep
it cool. OS was Win95B. But that extra 25MHz made all the difference!
I thnk you should try that.

Libretto Price Check?

2001-02-14 Thread Dan Ridenhour

Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 16:27:58 -0600
From: "Dan Ridenhour" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Libretto Price Check?

All,

Well ive realized that my trusty libby hasnt been seeing much use lately,
largely do to a combination of a pocket-pc and a PIII notebook supplied by
my employer. While i really like the little guy and would hate to see it
go... i find myself thinking of selling it so someone else can put it to use
(and i can reclaim some desk space)

So... im not sure im gonna sell it yet, but im curious what my setup would
go for in the current market...

Libretto 50ct
100mhz overclocked processor
- no problems whatsoever with heat etc. although i do run RAIN to extend
battery life & reduce heat.
32mb RAM
810mb HD
Standard Port Replicator
Enhanced Port Replicator (with pcmcia slot)
Standard battery - Holds charge (about 60min runtime iirc)
Extended Battery - Used very little in nearly new condition.
External Floppy Drive
AC Adapter
3COM 33.6 modem / 10/100 ethernet combo card.
Targus Case (the small one)
Currently running Win95

Related Items I may include if its worth it...
- Webgear wireless network kit... ISA expansion card, 2 PCMCIA nic cards...
works great in the libby for wireless internet in your house. :)
- Paralell port ZIP drive.

So any idea what this would go for? Ive looked on ebay but the prices seem
to vary widely and often have little to do with the actual worth of the
hardware, and more to do with who happened to see the auction links

>OLP3 sound card on the Libby?

OH! Richard

I went through this whole 'sound in DOS' problem too, and the answer was
embarassingly simple. Perhaps this will work for you. I'd loaded a new OS
(W98, but I think the problem would have been the same if I reloaded W95),
and had no sound in DOS afterwards.

We went back and forth here on the list for a couple of weeks, having a
couple different sides of the issue being put forward... one as I recall was
that all you needed was a "Set Blaster=XXX" in your autoexec.bat, and
that no DOS drivers were really needed for the 50CT to get sound in DOS.

Well that last argument didn't hold water. I remembered at one point that I
never bothered to load the sound drivers that came with the Libretto, and
that Toshiba has posted at their website on their support pages. When I
booted W98 after loading it, THERE WAS SOUND! That little Windows 'jingle'
merrily greated me with the Windows tips window [ hmmm ;-) ], and I
thought no more about sound drivers.

Heh... well I finally remembered I hadn't loaded the 50CTs sound drivers, so
I downloaded them from the Toshiba site, loaded them, and VOILA! Sound in
DOS!

So if you've recently installed a new OS, this could very well be your
problem. If not... hey... give us some more info, and someone will probbaly
come up with a fix for you. I'd be interested in any DOS MP3 program you
might find... but you're not going to be able to multi-task in Windows with
a DOS program running anyway... right?

Ciao,

Matt

Richard,

I have a 50CT that I've had MusicMatch running on for over a year. I wrote
MusicMatch support for a couple things, and they told me my system wouldn't
run their software because of the 75MHz CPU and 32MB RAM. The heck with
them I said... and proceeded to get the thing working anyway.

BUT... I really couldn't do anything else with the 50CT while the MP3s were
playing. Having music on long trips was rweally nice though. I recently
bought a 70CT on EBay that multiitasks fine with MusicMatch running.

If you're interested in tweaking your system to at least run MusicMatch
alone, see the note I wrote to the list last years at:

  http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/2000/msg00516.html

And thanks EVER so much to Mike Kopplin for getting his searchable archives
of the Libretto list set up! It's a bit like heaven for me. If anyone
missed his posting of the URL, it's here:

  http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/

Yes... the search engine has been very useful (and easy to find on a web

corresponding manufacturers on the Lib when I peruse old boards at the swap

I've been trying to get these people at Axion on the phone for days now, and
no one has been answering. I've been looking at that $56 Xicom combo card.
I see they carry a LOT of modems... so I may do a search to see what other
combo cards they may carry

I'm still interested in anyone else's suggestions for a combo card under
$100. Otherwise I'll probably spring for that Xircom.

Yeah... like Ken said, if your Xicom combo card is a cardbus (I think it was
a lot of the Xirom RealPort modems that were cardbus), the 50CT won't
support it.

Recently I've been coming to the conclusion that I must have a learning
disorder of some kind. I was never able to keep reading text books that
introduced and started discussing concepts that it explained in the next
chapter somewhere... I'd always spend ages looking at the preceeding
chapters for explanations, never find them, and quit in frustration.

Then I'm not certain when someone is putting me on. "Memoryless property"
sounds like everything I own... all that stuff just can never remember what
I did with it all! So maybe I need the kindergarten course ;-)

I mentioned last Tuesday about my archives being available. They
are at http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/ for now.

The archive still needs work, but for 1997 through 2000 it
should be fairly complete.

RE: Cellular & Libretto

2001-02-14 Thread Michael Berlant

Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 09:43:54 -0800
From: "Michael Berlant" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RE: Cellular & Libretto

If you can get reliable GSM service from FIDO, why not look at picking up a used
Motorola Timeport 7089 or 7389? These are tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 phones with iR
ports in the bald spot. You should be able to pick up a used 7089 on eBay for under
US$200, often little more than US$100. I have one of each model and they both use iR
for both address book synchronisation and modem interface (with an included iRDA
driver for your laptop).

As for locking to FIDO for the rest of your life, that's not the whole story. If you
buy a phone from FIDO and they give you a discount off the purchase price in exchange
for signing a one- or two-year contract for service, they will 'SIM lock' your phone
to only work with a SIM issued by them. Once you have fulfilled your commitment, they
should give you the code to release the lock, since they have earned in profit more
than the discount they gave you in the beginning. Naturally, if you buy a phone on
the open market, and confirm that it is not SIM locked, there is no way that FIDO can
impose a SIM lock on that phone, since they can never get their grubby little paws on
your phone.

While doing this, I've been experimenting with different players. Even the
most basic players, like Winamp & AMP2000 burp and skip and shutter if
ANYTHING else is being done. I've even gone so far as to load Winamp

So, I'm moving on to DOS MP3 players. I've downloaded a few to look at, but
I'm having a basic problem. Where can I find DOS drivers for the Yamaha
OLP3 sound card on the Libby?

If anyone is interested, I'll report back my trials & final config.

The list is searchable, but I don't think it's in a form that can be easily
downloaded. I also don't remember the exact URL, but you should be able to find it by
searching Yahoo or the like for the FCC ID of some board that you already have.

Good luck.

Well, there is also a setup utility executable. OPLSETUP.EXE maybe? So going
to `.com and getting the Windows/workgroups drivers would be helpful

The utility sets ports, volume, etc

applications... mostly at boot with the black DOS screen.

Okay... great... so maybe some night when the mood hits me, I might dig in
and swap monitor screens. It IS pretty sweet to have the extra CPU power
and the extended port replicator. No more unplugging and plugging in pc
card peripherals, and now I can multitask while playing MP3s. The little
50CT just barely played the MP3s... but never let me do anything else at the
same time.

They just do that - it'll probably be fine forever...

IIRC, the 70 and 50 are the same except for the motherboard, (or even just
the CPU) so you should be able to just crack the case, lift the top half
with the screen, and swap between machines. If you're planning on keeping
the old machine, you'll still have the original to swap back if the older
screen fails.

MTBF on the screens is hundreds of thousands of hours...which doesn't mean
*your* screen will last that long, but it's a good bet.

Hi,

Which platform are you looking at? On Linux, the
software is called EveryBuddy
(http://www.everybuddy.com).

I am not sure about Windows platform though.
