I was born an optimist, and some of my optimism had survived
the encounters with Microsoft software. So I tried OE.
My default browser is Netscape 4.7.
Continuing in the spirit of a riddle:

When I click on any link in OE mail, it opens a window displaying my C: drive.
I repeat.
When I click on any link in OE mail, it opens a window displaying my C: drive.

Not the Explorer window. It is the window I get when I doubleclick on the drive
outside the Explorer. So, there is a way to override the launching of IE.

I am not sure what I have done to get this behavior.
I think it is related to the following.
I had Opera installed at one time, then uninstalled it.
When I right-click over any file icon the top entry in the context window is for Opera.
The reason it is at the top is that I have spelled it with a leading zero instead of
oh.
When I doubleclick a text file icon in Explorer I get a dialog asking me to locate
Opera.
The initial path it fills on the input line of that dialog is C:\
This matches the window that opens from OE when I click a link.
So it must be trying to launch Opera but it does not find it.
At your own risk, you may want to try importing to your registry from a text file like
this:

textfile.reg
===
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\0pera] <=== 0 zero
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\0pera\command] <=== 0 zero
@="C:\\PROGRA~1Opera.exe \"%1\"" <=== O oh
===

Okay let's see who's willing to take a swing at this one :

I've recently switched to opera 5 as the default browser on my
win98 100CT
but kept IE 5 installed. All the html pages in the windows
explorer, dialog
boxes etc show the opera icon and clicking any html page or
email attachment
launches opera. Good. I'm also using OE5 as my default mail
client and
here's the strange one: when i click on a link from inside an
email msg it
launches IE! I haven't yet figured out a way past this
annoyance... Any
takers?

Smells like maybe a registry hack needed here

Cheers!

I haven't worked with OE5 -- I avoid MS software as much as possible -- but
unless OE is doing something nasty, it shouldn't take a registry hack.

Close OE. Launch Opera, and hit Alt-P for the Preference screen. Choose
Default Browser from the list at the left side. Put checkmarks in the
boxes for http, https, and ftp on the bottom part of the screen. Click
OK. Exit Opera, and restart the computer.

Return to Opera and verify that the configuration hasn't changed.

If not, launch OE and try clicking a link in a message. If it loads the
page in Opera, you're all set. If it launches IE, get rid of OE and get a
real mail client.Seriously, if it does launch IE, it probably
means that Microsoft has hard-coded IE into OE, which would be typical MS
arrogance.

Mike...

I know with the 100CT and 110CT, the BJC-80 or 50 needs to be configured as
follows:
If the Canon Printer drivers are already loaded and the printer is installed
follow the procedure below:
1. In the Printers folder, right click the "Canon BJC-80" and select
"Properties".
2. Select the "Details" tile
3. In the pull down menu labeled "Print to the following port" select "COMX:
(Infrared Serial (COM) Connection Port)" Where "X" is the COM port number
Ex. "COM4"
4. Select the "Okay" button and then try and Print.

Using the IR LPT3 port will NOT work. Try the above procedure with your
70CT to see if it works.

David T. Gillis

Hi Andy,

Win 9x's 'direct cable connection' with talk happily with the old dos
interlnk/intersvr utility (even if there's no OS on the disk and you just
booted up from a floppy!). It will even transfer long filenames over this
connection (intersvr may report the hdd size incorrectly but never mind
that). This method is great for transferring the win9x setup files from say
the cd-rom in your desktop to a freshly fdisked or repartitioned drive and
running setup from there afterward.

You'll need what is sometimes referred to as a 'laplink' cable tho... and if
you're thinking serial ports make sure you have a weekend to spare since
such transfers are very slow. You're much better off using the parallel
ports (if you need more help with the cable drop me a line off the list)...

Cheers!

Fdd uses an in-BIOS enabler.
Other PCMCIA cards need the card and socket services.

Linux Mandrake 7.2 PCMCIA install accept most network cards

Folks,
A question. Don't think it's been answered in the recent discussions...
Just got another Lib 100CT with a blank HDD. Tried various OS installations
and nothing would recognise my CD drive (its an HP writer, M8230e I think).
Gave in and found some floppies with DOS 6.2, installed that and installed
the CD's Dos drivers from floppy but now get an error about Card driver not
being installed and APSI Manager not installed. Does this mean it's not
recognising the PCMCIA slots? Seems strange as the FDD works! I thought the
BIOS did this? Do I need some Tosh drivers loaded in addition to any
standard MSDOS stuff?
Thought about doing it via a cable link to my other PC. I have a COM port
type of lead, but not sure if I need the Null Modem adapter?? The other
machine is running Win 98. Should I use the Microsoft Direct connect
program? and what should be running on the new "DOS" machine? Interlink??
Any help or instructions either on or off list would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Andy.

Ps following on from my note last week, the Libs at auction were from the
Dome and went for £325 to £350 which doesn't sound too bad until you add
17.5% vat and 10% buyers premium! :-(

HMM! I have often "apm: busy: Parameter out of range" when I ask
an hibernation. When I have 1 to 4 of this messsage, it is good.

What do you mean with "delayed config" ?
Some pcmcia cards need to have
# cat /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia
PCMCIA=yes

It worked (sorta) as modules in 2.2.15 (?) under M7.1 - but only the eight
bit soundblaster bit. When I tried to use any of the 16 bit apps e.g. to
play mp2, it was shoving the data out as eight bit chunks, half speed. Never
sorted that one.

I haven't got as far as checking that yet - I'm not convinced that the
kernel is running with the right parameters yet...but I don't know where
those parameters come from :)

Once it's working, you're welcome - though I was kinda hoping for a copy of

I have never got the sound to work without it being compiled as modules.

kernel 2.4.2 and CT50

2001-03-05 Thread neil barnes

Date: Mon, 05 Mar 2001 09:07:28
From: "neil barnes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: kernel 2.4.2 and CT50

This is probably aimed at Christian...

I've managed to compile 2.4.2 quite happily (if slowly!) and end up with an
executable core...but when I run it, it complains that it can't find the
sound modules (which the previous version used and which I've compiled into
the kernel). This sounds as if there's a config file somewhere which I don't
know about which should tell the kernel what it needs.

The second probelm is that I don't get a delayed config of the pcmcia
network card (psion dacom gold 28.8/10M combo - NE2000 according to the old
kernel) any longer.

Any thoughts?

Backup (was: Success: Complete reinstall WITHOUT CD-ROM)

2001-03-05 Thread Kapusta Gerhard

From: Kapusta Gerhard <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Backup (was: Success: Complete reinstall WITHOUT CD-ROM)

Hi!

Jim wrote:

> enough, but it saves me pain later on.

I also hate to install windows new, but I do it usually only when I got a
new PC!

Most PC users foreget one important thing: doing a regular backup!

I do it in a very simple way: I have 2 installations on all my PC's, one for
regular work, and one for backup and test purposes.

To do a full backup I start the second installation and do a simple copy of
the first installation and all the user stuff to another disk or PC. It can
be done with drag and drop from the explorer. Of course it is possible to
start the first installation and do a backup of the second one.

My backup disks are removeable and stored on different locations, so even by
theft or burning down my house would not destroy my windows! (Perhaps
windows does not need so much security, but tons of irretrival digital
pictures need it!)

A nice side effect of having 2 installations on a PC is the following: I
never run any unknown program and I never install any untested software on
my work installation! For test purposes I use the second installation, if it
is unstable by installing end experimenting, I replace it by a copy from my
backup disk.

It is all very simple and very reliable. You only need enough HD-space and a
network.

Jim wrote:

My Lib is never rebootet, except for backup (to activate the second
installation) or if a new installed software requires this!
