That doesn't look good...is there anything coming out of the video port on
the 70 through an extender? Is the 70 making booting noises at all? Is it
possible that it's been set to 'external' video only? does the screen light
up black when it's turned on (look in a dark room)?

Thanks for the report, Agent Jim.

Well, I tried the fried extended one on the external charger I just got...
same type result. When I find the standard battery and put it together, I
expect the same result.

I don't know how used the extended one was, but the standard one can't be a
year old and used maybe 15 times.

I still wonder if the Libretto itself fried them, with some sort of fault in
IT'S charger circuit...

Looking over your note again, I'd say this last paragraph is the winner :-P
...if you read my last note, it seems like it is, "something else in the
system that's having problems." It seems that both lids and their contents,
LCDs, boards etc., are okay. But when the ribbons of each get's plugged
into the 70CT's socket and the rest of the unit assembled... neither LCD
want to light up.

I looked as closely as possible through a magnifying glass to the male and
female ribbon socket ends, and all the contacts look good there. Perhaps
some contact spray?? However it seems I've only made matters worse with
such sprays in the past using them on mice and audio pots.

Beyond that, what would make the screen blink and go black on the MB end is
a while new puzzle.

Pres, so far, so good, but not bragging. The standard battery that came with
my 50 is still going strong. Likewise the enhanced one I bought from Kim in
the first year I had the 50. She got stuck with it when she upgraded to a 100

I think the Lib is four years old. Got it new from Computer City when they

  It'll work with exceptions.

Here's a post from 5 years ago on the same topic (again, search Libretto
Mailng List archives - links on my site below):

Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 23:47:53 -0400
From: "Pres Waterman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: American keyboard on Japanese machine

I am trying an American keyboard on a Japanese Libretto 50 with BIOS 6.30
bought in Japan in June 1997. DOS7 and Win95English, with the jkeybrd.sys
and kbdjp002.kbd stuff bypassed.

Many things work right. But a few don't.

American keyMakes

ALT Caps Lock
CTRLALT
Caps LockCtrl ( I think... wierd )
Menu Windows
PrtScrMenu

Perhaps Windows=PrtScr. I believe those can be popped off and shuffled but
I will not try that until I am committed to this keyboard.

Now, Caps Lock, CTRL and ALT are rather mixed up, but only 2 of the 3 sizes
are the same. They won't all swap around physically.

And "CTRL" ( which is labelled Caps Lock ) plus right-arrow goes to the end
of the word, not the line. I can't seem to make PgUp, PgDn, Home and End
work at all, even CTRL+Fn+End. I may simply not have found the proper Fn
button.

The size difference between the Japanese and American keyboards is
unnerving, and causing as many errors as I used to make with the little one.
The bigger keys do feel luxurious, though. Not anyway near full-size, but
bigger than the Japanese model.

Here is the American Keyboard's regular characters on the Japanese machine

( not shifted )

1234567890-=
qwertyuiop[]\
asdfghjkl;'
zxcvbnm,./

( shifted )

!@#$%^&*()_+
QWERTYUIOP{}|
ASDFGHJKL:"
ZXCVBNM<>?

All above came out perfect as they are labelled, as does the ENTER key.

Apparently the only problems will be the CAPS LOCK, CTRL, ALT, Fn, Windows,
Menu and maybe the PrtScr and Pause keys.

TAB, INS, DEL, BkSp, Shift, ESC, all look good. I presume the F1, F2, F3,...
are all OK.

So far I haven't conclusively found the Fn key. Without that, PgUp and PgDn
are goners and will make reading difficult.

I am running Rex Perkins' wonderful vkpc110.vxd which makes the unused
Japanese keys to the left and right of the spacebar turn into Windows and
Menu, but I don't think that has any bearing since the dummy Japanese keys
are not present.

Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] for info on that.

Yep, happened to me.
You need a new battery.

Check that out to find the location of this backup battery, and how to get

My old standard battery that came with my original Japanese L100 did that
for me two years ago.

My second battery recently did the same thing to me (standard battery bought
two years ago).

The life of your batteries has come to end. I bought a new enhanced battery
two weeks ago for $130 and it works. I guess battery dies in one or two
years (based on usuage) no matter how many batteries you have in hand to
rotate.

Subject: MAIN BATTERY

Hi. I bought a new "standard" 1200 mAH battery for the L100 last year to
compliment the used enhanced battery I had. I am careful to cycle the
batteries regularly to keep them from going weak.

Well, A month ago I noticed the standard battery would not take a charge.
Either the orange light would stay on forever or it would go green
immediately ( done ). Either way the Libretto had no life. OK, maybe a bad
battery.

Last week my trusty used enhanced battery did pretty much the same thing,
except the orange light would wink out twice every few seconds.
On-off-on-off-Onnn if the battery was plugged in
while the A/C is also plugged in.

Does the group feel I have a bad charger in the computer or 2 battery
failures?

I do have an external charger I just got, as soon as I find it I will try
that to charge it.

Thanks

Lib does have a separate battery on the mother board for the clock. It's
only recharged when the machine is up and running. It won't recharge is
machine is turned off while AC is connected. How often do you use your Lib?

My L100 is four years old and the clock battery is still working. But I know
sooner or late this thing will fall apart. But the clock battery is the last
thing I would worry about.

You need a floppy disk to complete the BIOS update. There is no other way
around. The program you download should automatically create a bootable
floppy disk for you. You boot off that floppy and the BIOS upgrade proceeds
automatically.

You can't update Libretto's BIOS without a floppy drive.

Wonder if someone could tell me the process of upgrading the BIOS on my
Lib 100CT. I downloaded 8.10 but when I ran the program it reported
something like:

Due to restrictions installed on this machine, the process cannot be
completed

Any ideas please?

did you let Win2K install the sound drivers or are you using alternatie
ones? Which BIOS version are you running?

How do you get it to create a partition from a specific sector? I can only
find the part to do it from a Megabyte size range.

I am currently out of the office come night, lunchtime, etc.

Can't people check mail remotely anymore? Or subscribe to mailing
lists from accounts where you don't need everyone to know that it's time
to steal your stapler?
The day I establish a vacation message on a non-work system is the
day that I've put far too much importance on e-mail.

No, Japanese keyboard just have different layout. That's all.

Can't say for L50. On my Japanese L100, I flashed English BIOS without any
problem or even a warning.

Lib 70 clock batteries

Subject: Lib 70 clock batteries

I've been running my Lib 70 without the main battery attached and I've
noticed that the clock in Win98 resets to midnight sometimes. The date is
always fine and none of the BIOS settings seem to be affected (can't
guarantee that tho'.). Does the machine have a seperate battery for the
clock/CMOS which might be failing, or does the machine need the main battery
attached?

Cheers,
Jim Hudd.

Most autoresponders respond once per address /per day/.

The real problem is that this list seems to be powered by a remailer
rather than a proper mailing list manager. As such, it does its thing
in ways that break all known autoresponders (eg. Return-Path to list
address, no "Precedence: bulk" or Mailing-List: headers).
